This study investigates the influence of heavy metals on ouabain-binding in presence of thiol (sulfhydryl) compounds. The data on in vitro effects of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) showed significant inhibition of 3H-ouabain binding to microsomal membrane in a concentration-dependent manner. The concentrations of five metals in oysters from ten locations along the Northern Territory coastline were determined during the dry season of 1989. The measured concentrations of iron, cadmium, zinc, manganese and copper in oysers were 11.6-274, 0.17-9.1, 4.79-735, 0.25-69.85 and nd-70.2 µg g(-1) wet weight. The level of cadmium exceeded the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) recommended limit at five sites. The largest fluctuation occurred in zinc and cadmium while the other metals displayed much less variation.

A study was carried out in 3 copper alloy industries: a foundry for scrap of various origin producing brass and bronze alloys (foundry A) and 2 foundries that used these same alloys (foundries B and C). Experimental evidence of air borne heavy metal pollution as the cause of a disease of unknown etiology in beef cattle was obtained. Cadmium uptake from the lumen of the rat jejunum is characterized by apparent saturability and by sensitivity to inhibition by Zn and Ca. Clioquinol can increase the penetration of metallic cations through cellular membranes by forming lipophilic metal-chelates. It is suggested that the pathogenesis of SMON may involve an accumulation of injurious metals in nervous tissues due to facilitated uptake by complex formation with clioquinol. The Japanese have been more heavily exposed to metals by environmental pollution than the inhabitants of other countries, which may explain the prevalent occurrence of SMON in Japan.

Epidemiological studies on metal levels in blood were carried out.
