One hundred seventy-three strains of shigellae (113 Shigella sonnei, 56 S. flexneri, and four others) isolated in Houston during 1974 were tested for susceptibility to commonly used and newer antimicrobial agents. Forty-five percent of S. sonnei strains were susceptible to ampicillin, whereas 93% of S. flexneri strains were susceptible to that agent. S. sonnei and S. flexneri strains were equally susceptible to tetracycline (35 and 33%, respectively). All 173 strains were uniformly susceptible to quinoline drugs (cinoxacin, oxolinic acid, and nalidixic acid) and to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol

Susceptibility of 64 clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to metronidazole was determined by the agar dilution technique using Mueller-Hinton and chocolate agar media. All isolates were resistant to metronidazole at 12.5 mug/ml in either medium. This lack of activity of metronidazole against N. gonorrhoeae would suggest that the ability to recover N. gonorrhoeae in patients being treated with metronidazole for concurrent Trichomonas vaginalis infections should not be hampered.

A total of 284 clinical isolates of various species of Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. maltophilia, and Acinetobacter anitratum were tested for susceptibility to carbenicillin by the standardized Bauer-Kirby disc diffusion technique and a microtiter broth dilution method. The data obtained led to the following proposed criteria for the interpretation of the results of disc susceptibility tests. Enterobacteriaceae that yield zones of inhibition equal to or greater than 20 mm in diameter around 50-mug discs of carbenicillin are designated as sensitive to the drug; isolates that yi

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the taxonomic and functional profiles of the root canal microbiome in teeth with large versus small periapical lesions, examining the influence of clinical variables on microbial composition and functional pathways.
METHODS: Samples from 25 teeth with large (>8 mm) and 20 with small periapical lesions (<2 mm) were analyzed. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction, 16S next-generation and whole genome sequencing were used to assess microbial load, diversity, and composition. Functional predictions were performed using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential causal relationships of the oral microbiome with the risks of oral cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and tongue cancer using two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis, while distinguishing these from reverse causal effects of the cancers on microbial abundance.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Using single-nucleotide polymorphisms as instrumental variables, we applied the MR inverse-variance-weighted approach to evaluate the effects of the dorsal-tongue and salivary microbiomes on oral, oropharyngeal, and tongue cancers. Analyses were conducted with the R package T

BACKGROUND: The failure of empirical therapy is frequently observed, even in community-acquired urinary tract infections. We, therefore, conducted a prospective, clinic-based study in 2004-2005 to document anti-microbial resistance rates and correlate them with possible risk factors to assist empirical decision-making.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Symptomatic patients with pyuria underwent urine culture. Isolates were identified using standard methods and anti-microbial resistance was determined by disk-diffusion. Ultrasonography was used to detect complicating factors. Patients were stratified by

OBJECTIVE: The morphological classification of microbial cultures and colonies requires specialized knowledge and experience; therefore, automation in this field remains limited. This study examines the feasibility of automating the identification of pathogenic microbial species from colony images of cultured microorganisms.
METHODS: Two distinct image datasets were constructed for 10 clinically relevant species: a colony image dataset, consisting of individual colony images cropped, and a tile image dataset, generated by dividing entire images of the culture plate into tiles. Separate ResNet

Five protocols were compared to determine the combined effects of different sample weights and culture methods for the recovery of Salmonella from 310 pig cecal samples taken in abattoirs as part of the Canadian Integrated Program for Anti-microbial Resistance Surveillance. Sample weights evaluated were 1 and 10 g. Culture methods used with each sample weight were modified semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis agar (MSRV) and brilliant green agar with sulfa and novobiocin (BGSN) and xylose-lysine-tergitol-4 agar (XLT4). A preliminary sample preparation step in saline was also evaluated using a 10-g

Although Serratia marcescens is a common cause of nosocomial infection in Taiwan, strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are rare. We detected four clinical isolates of S. marcescens from Taiwan that exhibited resistance to cefotaxime (MICs, > 256 microg/ml) and cefepime (MICs, > or = 32 microg/ml), but were susceptible to imipenem and meropenem. Transconjugants revealed similar MIC profiles when compared to the parental strains. Isoelectric focusing revealed one major transferable beta-lactamase (pI 8.4), which was further identified as CTX-M-3 by polymerase chain reactio

Sixty-two strains of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci, 21 Streptococcus faecalis and 17 other strains of streptococci isolated from cases of endocarditis were tested for sensitivity against rifampicin, teicoplanin, vancomycin, fusidic acid, erythromycin and novobiocin. Only rifampicin, novobiocin and teicoplanin were found to be active against the great majority of these strains. The microbial properties of these antibiotics suggest the necessity of combinations for effective therapy. The combinations rifampicin + novobiocin and rifampicin + teicoplanin were additive

A simplified, artificial siderophore, N5-acetyl-N5-hydroxy-L-ornithine (AHO), can be used as a molecular carrier for the construction of the Trojan Horse-type conjugates exhibiting antifungal activity. Rationally designed AHO-incorporating conjugates with 4-cyano-tryptophan were effectively transported and accumulated in human pathogenic yeasts, especially Candida albicans and Candida glabrata (Nakaseomyces glabratus), known to express the Sit1/Arn1 hydroxamate siderophore uptake system. The AHO-containing conjugates with cispentacin (CP) demonstrated antifungal in vitro activity, particularly

Gabiroba (Campomanesia xanthocarpa Berg) is a nutritious fruit native to the Atlantic Forest, recognized for its juicy, sweet, and aromatic flavor, but remains unexplored as a source of biotechnological yeasts. This study aimed to isolate and identify yeasts from naturally fermented Gabiroba fruits and assess their impact on the fermentation process of fresh Gabiroba pulp. Two yeast isolates, belonging to the genera Hanseniaspora and Meyerozyma, were obtained from Gabiroba and used to produce two fermented samples. Both isolates successfully fermented the fruit within 120 hours, displaying ant

UNLABELLED: Agar dilution is a reference susceptibility testing method uniquely or preferentially recommended for certain antimicrobials. However, the effort required to pour individual agar plates spanning a doubling dilution range precludes its practical implementation in hospital clinical laboratories. Here, we describe an on-demand replacement for agar dilution, specifically substituting Poloxamer 407 (also known as Pluronic F-127) for Bacto agar as the solidifying agent. Notably, 20% Poloxamer 407 solutions (e.g., with Mueller-Hinton broth) remain liquid at refrigerated temperatures but s

UNLABELLED: Due to the complexity of microbial communities and coarseness of currently available manipulation techniques (e.g., transplantation and antibiotic treatment), it is often difficult to fully elucidate the interactions between members that define community structure and function from the top down. Thus, it is imperative to be able to observe and manipulate subpopulations within microbial communities to enable a fine-detail understanding of the full spectrum and mechanism of community functions. However, there is a technological gap that prevents targeted manipulation of subpopulation

Birch tar is well-documented for its use as an adhesive in the Middle Palaeolithic of Europe, but other uses remain poorly explored. Drawing from recent arguments suggesting multimodal uses of products such as ochre and birch tar, this study tests the antibiotic properties of birch tar produced experimentally with methods reconstructed from Middle Palaeolithic birch tar finds from Europe. Made from the bark of Betula pendula and Betula pubescens, widely documented for the European Late Pleistocene, we produced birch tar samples using an underground pit method, a condensation method, and a mode
