The patient journey and burden of disease in Demodex blepharitis in the United States.

AIM: Demodex blepharitis (DB) is a chronic eyelid disease caused by an infestation of Demodex mites. The objective of this chart audit study was to characterize the patient journey and burden of illness associated with DB from an eye-care provider's perspective. METHODS: Retrospective medical data for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of DB were anonymously collected via ophthalmologists and optometrists in the US (collectively eye-care providers [ECPs]), in June-July 2022. Each eligible ECP completed a questionnaire and provided chart abstractions of 1-5 medical charts of patients with DB

Impact of Dermanyssus gallinae infestation on persistent outbreaks of fowl typhoid in commercial layer chicken farms.

Although it has rapidly decreased since the early 2000s, fowl typhoid still occurs in commercial layer chickens, causing a significant economic loss in Korea. There is growing concern about the emergence of new pathogenic strains of the causative agent, Salmonella Gallinarum, which is able to overcome vaccine immunity. It has also been suspected that the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, which is commonly found in layer chicken farms, may be an important cause of the recurrence of fowl typhoid in the farms. This study was conducted to examine changes in the virulence of recent isolates o

Ectoparasite sharing among native and invasive birds in a metropolitan area.

Parasite-mediated competition has been reported to be one of the most harmful, although overlooked, impacts that alien species have on native ecosystems. Monk parakeets Myiopsitta monachus are successful invaders in Europe, where they have been introduced from South America. Colonial nests of these parrots may also host other species, e.g. the rock pigeon Columba livia forma domestica. In this work, we analysed the ectoparasite composition of monk parakeets in Barcelona (Spain) and we evaluated their potential role as parasite-mediated competitors, by comparing their parasitic load with that o

[Investigation of the prevalance of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis in rosacea patients].

OBJECTIVE: Demodex spp. is an acari that resides in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin unit. It is known that Demodex spp. may play a role in the pathogenesis of rosacea and acne. Common sites of Demodex infestation are the facial skin , forehead, cheeks, chin and nasolabial fold. This study was performed between January 2010 and December 2011. It was carried out in order to investigate the frequency of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis among rosacea patients who presented to the Fırat University Hospital Parasitology-Mycology Laboratory. METHODS: Skin scrapings were ta

Impact of two treatments of a formulation of Beauveria bassiana (Deuteromycota: Hyphomycetes) conidia on Varroa mites (Acari: Varroidae) and on honeybee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colony health.

Bee colonies in southern France were treated with conidia (asexual spores) from two strains of Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus. One strain was commercial (GHA) and the other had been isolated from Varroa mites in the region (Bb05002). Objectives were to evaluate treatment effect on colony weight, adult bee mass, capped brood, and on Varroa fall onto sticky boards. Treatments included conidia formulated with either carnauba or candelilla wax powder, candelilla wax powder alone, or control; in two treatment groups formulation was applied a second time after one week. Treatment did

[Demodicidosis in humans as a current problem in dermatology].

Demodex mites are common parasites in the hair follicles and in the pilosebaceous glands. Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis have been identified in humans and play a role in three facial conditions: Pityriasis folliculorum, rosacea-like demodicidosis and Demodicidosis gravis. The highly infected sites by this mites are: forehead, area around the orbit, area around the nose, chin and area around the mouth. Infection of the skin by D. folliculorum is more frequent among females and in the elderly people. The presence of mites can be determined by microscopic inspection of secretion from sebum g

Cannibalism and interspecific predation in a phytoseiid predator guild from cassava fields in Africa: evidence from the laboratory.

Interspecific predation and cannibalism are common types of interaction in phytoseiid predator guilds, but the extent and nature of these interactions have not been determined yet in phytoseiid guilds composed of African native and neotropical exotic phytoseiid predators found in cassava habitat in southern Africa. We determined in laboratory experiments the level of cannibalism and interspecific predation among the three phytoseiid mite species Euseius fustis, Iphiseius degenerans, and Typhlodromalus aripo in the absence of food and in the presence of limited or abundant quantities of two foo

Density of Demodex folliculorum in rosacea: a case-control study using standardized skin-surface biopsy.

A standardized skin-surface biopsy (1 cm2) of the check was performed in 49 patients with rosacea [13 with erythemato-telangiectatic rosacea (ETR), three with squamous rosacea (SR), 33 with papulopustular rosacea (PPR)], and 45 controls. A mean density of 0.7 Demodex folliculorum/cm2 was found in controls, 98% of whom had less than five Demodex/cm2. When all clinical types of rosacea were considered collectively, the density of Demodex was significantly higher in patients with rosacea than in controls (mean = 10.8/cm2; P < 0.001). When the various clinical types of rosacea were considered sepa

Ectoparasite prevalence and new records of bird lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) in dove and pigeon species (Aves: Columbidae) in Algeria.

The Columbidae are widely distributed in Algeria and play important ecological and cultural roles. However, they are also recognized as hosts of diverse ectoparasite communities that may affect bird health and act as potential reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens. Despite this importance, knowledge about the diversity, distribution of ectoparasites associated with columbids in Algeria remains fragmentary. This study aimed to provide a complete inventory of ectoparasites infesting domestic and wild columbids in northern Algeria, specifically to (i) assess the species richness of ectoparasites acros

In vivo evaluation of a cytochrome P450 gene from poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, as a vaccine antigen for chicks.

BACKGROUND: Dermanyssus gallinae is a prevalent ectoparasite in the poultry farms, inflicting damage on chicken health through blood-sucking. Chemical acaricides commonly used for mite control often show reduced efficacy due to the development of resistance. Therefore, alternative control methods are needed, and vaccination is a promising strategy for controlling D. gallinae. METHODS: The mRNA expression of Deg-CYP-3 in mites at various developmental stages, as well as under fed and starved conditions, was analyzed. Subsequently, recombinant protein rCYP-3 was induced, purified, and employed

Demodex parasite density in patients with melasma: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Although multiple factors contribute to the development of melasma, there are reports suggesting a potential role of Demodex parasites in hyperpigmentation. This study aimed to compare the density and prevalence of Demodex infestation between patients with melasma and healthy controls. METHODS: This case-control study included 35 melasma patients and 35 healthy volunteers. Standard superficial skin biopsies using cyanoacrylate adhesive were taken from the malar regions. Samples were examined via light microscopy, with a density of ≥5 Demodex/cm2 defined as positive. RESULTS: No s

Is Demodex Blepharitis Connected With Cataract Surgery?

PURPOSE: To determine whether there is an increased incidence of Demodex of the eyelashes among patients after cataract extraction surgery. DESIGN: Prospective, noncomparative clinical study. METHODS: A cohort of patients who underwent cataract extraction surgery had several eyelashes removed preoperatively that were examined independently by the hospital laboratory for the presence of the Demodex mite. This was repeated 3 weeks after surgery. During several postoperative weeks, patients received the standard treatment of steroid drops alone for a period as individually required. RESULTS: A

Molecular methods indicate lack of spread of Acarapis woodi introduced to honey bees in western Norway.

The tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi, may be one of many factors contributing to the decline in honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations. Databases on the widespread distribution of A. woodi exist, but the data seem patchy. Norway is not listed as being infested, although there have been at least two separate introductions of the parasite. Investigations in 2003, 2006, and 2009 using standard microscopy methods indicated persistence of A. woodi in honey bees in this region. In 2013, we conducted another survey. Samples were sent in from 335 beehives belonging to 39 apiaries, and all were asked to c

A case report of demodicosis.

We report on a patient who had an excessive number of mites (Demodex folliculorum) on his eye lashes, i.e. 10 mites on eight lashes examined. A review of three previous reports suggested that one mite for every two lashes represents an over population of this nearly ubiquitous mite. Greasy scales on the lashes and foamy tears suggested that seborrhea was present as well as demodicosis. The primary symptoms of itching was relieved after one week of treatment with mercuric oxide ointment and lid scrubs, although the number of mites was not reduced. Treatment for an additional two weeks did reduc
