The dog mite, Demodex canis: prevalence, fungal co-infection, reactions to light, and hair follicle apoptosis.

Infection rate, reaction to light, and hair follicle apoptosis are examined in the dogmite, Demodex canis Leydig (Prostigmata: Demodicidae), in dogs from the northern area of Taiwan. An analysis of relevant samples revealed 7.2% (73/1013) prevalence of D. canis infection. Infection during the investigation peaked each winter, with an average prevalence of 12.5% (32/255). The infection rates significantly varied in accordance with month, sex, age, and breed (p < 0.05). Most of the lesions were discovered on the backs of the infected animals, where the infection rate was 52.1% (38/73) (P < 0.05)

Detection of Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus, in a novel mite species, Eushoengastia koreaensis, in Korea.

To identify potential vector species of scrub typhus in the Republic of Korea (ROK), chigger mites were harvested from wild rodents captured at nine localities in October 2005. The bodies of the chigger mites were individually punctured with a fine pin, squeezed out internal contents, and examined for Orientia tsutsugamushi DNA by nested polymerase chain reaction. The exoskeleton of associated chiggers was mounted on glass slides with polyvinylalcohol (PVA) medium for identification. Among 830 individuals belonging to 4 genera and 14 species, O. tsutsugamushi was detected from 22 chiggers of s…

A mouse model for in vivo tracking of the major dust mite allergen Der p 2 after inhalation.

Inhaled environmental antigens, i.e. allergens, cause allergic symptoms in millions of patients worldwide. As little is known about the fate of an allergen upon inhalation, we addressed this issue for a major dust mite allergen, Der p 2. First, a model for Der p 2-sensitization was established in C57BL/6 J mice, in which sensitized mice mounted a Der p 2-specific IgE-response with eosinophilic lung inflammation after allergen challenge in the airways. In this model, we applied recombinant Der p 2 carrying a novel C-terminal tetrapeptide Sel-tag enabling labelling with the gamma-emitting radion

Acaricide resistance in northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) populations on caged layer operations in Southern California.

Southern California caged layer operations were visited over 3 yr. Northern fowl mites from 26 field populations were tested for acaricide resistance using a capillary pipette and glass dish bioassay. One was a susceptible field population with no pesticide exposure for over 30 yr (reference site for resistance ratio calculation). Technical and commercial formulations of malathion, carbaryl (Sevin), permethrin, and a commercial formulation of tetrachlorvinphos/dichlorvos (Ravap) were tested. Malathion did not have high activity for mites relative to other materials, but resistance to both tech…

Jasmonic acid is a key regulator of spider mite-induced volatile terpenoid and methyl salicylate emission in tomato.

The tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) mutant def-1, which is deficient in induced jasmonic acid (JA) accumulation upon wounding or herbivory, was used to study the role of JA in the direct and indirect defense responses to phytophagous mites (Tetranychus urticae). In contrast to earlier reports, spider mites laid as many eggs and caused as much damage on def-1 as on wild-type plants, even though def-1 lacked induction of proteinase inhibitor activity. However, the hatching-rate of eggs on def-1 was significantly higher, suggesting that JA-dependent direct defenses enhanced egg mortality or incr…

IgA response in serum and gut secretion in sensitized mice fed with the dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus extract.

Induced oral tolerance to mucosal-exposed antigens in immunized animals is of particular interest for the development of immunotherapeutic approaches to human allergic diseases. This is a unique feature of mucosal surfaces which represent the main contact interface with the external environment. However, the influence of oral tolerance on specific and natural polyreactive IgA antibodies, the major defense mechanism of the mucosa, is unknown. We have shown that oral administration of an extract of the dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) to primed mice caused down-regulation of IgE res

Citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) may be an important allergen in the development of asthma among exposed children.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have demonstrated that spider mites are important allergens in the development of asthma in fruit-cultivating farmers. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitization rate to the citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) in children living in rural areas, and to determine the allergenic cross-reactivity with other mites. METHODS: A total of 7254 children (ages 7-15 years) living in rural areas were enrolled, and each subject was evaluated by a questionnaire and a skin prick test. Allergenic cross-reactivity was evaluated by ELISA inhibition tests…

Lymphoproliferative responses in cord blood and at one year: no evidence for the effect of in utero exposure to dust mite allergens.

BACKGROUND: Maternal allergen exposure beyond the 22nd week of pregnancy may be important in foetal T cell priming. Allergen-specific cord blood mononuclear cell (CBMC) immunoproliferative responses without corresponding bacterial antigen responses (tetanus toxoid), have been suggested as evidence of in utero sensitization. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between lymphoproliferative responses at birth and at 1 year with maternal and 1-year infants house dust mite allergen exposure. METHODS: Home visits and dust sampling were performed by the 20th week of pregnancy, immediately af

Specific IgG1 and IgG4 antibodies to citrus red mite in citrus farmers: a study of their relationship to respiratory symptoms.

Citrus red mite (CRM) is known as the most common sensitizing allergen in subjects with asthma and rhinitis working on citrus farms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of specific IgG1 (slgG1) and specific IgG4 (slgG4) to CRM in citrus farmers. Questionnaire survey and skin prick test including CRM antigen was done by 136 workers. Specific IgE (slgE), slgG1 and slgG4 to CRM were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). CRM-sensitive-asthma was diagnosed upon presence of asthmatic symptoms by questionnaire, airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine and slgE to CRM. CRM

[An experimental study of the capacity of the rat mite Ornithonyssus bacoti (Hirst, 1913) to ingest, maintain and transmit Borrelia].

For the first time a possibility of the gamasina mites' O. bacoti participation in Lyme disease spirochetes' circulation has been demonstrated. It has been experimentally shown that Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. are received by O. bacoti, survive in them for at least 21 days and are transmitted to white mice through mites' bites. Mice's infestation has occurred in 23% of cases. It is suggested that other bloodsucking gamasina mites inhabiting the Lyme borreliosis reservoir rodents nests may be capable of participating in borrelia circulation in the Lyme disease endemic areas.

Mite allergen (Der p 1) levels in houses of children with atopic dermatitis: the relationship with allergometric tests.

Several studies, in particular in adult groups, have evaluated the involvement of mites in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). This still remains controversial. The objective of this study was to determine the level of house dust mites (HDMs) in the beds of a group of children with AD and correlate these levels with their allergometric assessment. Forty-one children with AD underwent allergometric tests (prick test, patch test and radioallergosorbent test, RAST) and the concentration levels of HDMs in their homes were evaluated. Our data show that about half of the children (51%) with …

Mite, cat, and cockroach exposure, allergen sensitisation, and asthma in children: a case-control study of three schools.

BACKGROUND: The amount of allergen necessary to sensitise genetically "at risk" children is unclear. The relation between allergen exposure and asthma is also uncertain. METHODS: To ensure a wide range of allergen exposures the data from case-control studies of asthma in children aged 12-14 years attending three schools in Los Alamos, New Mexico and Central Virginia were combined. Skin prick tests to indoor and outdoor allergens and bronchial hyperreactivity to histamine were assessed in children with and without symptoms of asthma. The concentration of mite, cat, and cockroach allergens in d

The efficacy of simplified eradication strategies against sarcoptic mange mite infections in swine herds monitored by an ELISA.

Eradication programmes directed against Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis, performed without any disinfection of the environment, were compared to … s of the piglets. The results obtained demonstrate that it is possible to eradicate sarcoptic mange mites in swine herds with the use of simplified eradication programmes. The success of such programmes may efficiently be monitored by measuring the levels of serum antibodies to S. scabiei.

Higher asthma occurrence in an urban than a suburban area: role of house dust mite skin allergy.

Understanding of geographical differences in asthma prevalence may be helpful in explaining recent increases in the occurrence of asthma. We wondered whether differences in allergic sensitization or other factors could explain differences in reported occurrence of asthma between an urban centre and a neighbouring suburban area. From the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) questionnaire, responses on asthma symptoms and risk factors and results of 11 skin allergy tests were available from 656 young adults living in urban or south suburban Antwerp, Belgium. Answers to five asthm

Density of itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) and temporal development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in swine mange.

Experimental infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) were established to study development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in pigs. Forty-eight pigs in six isolation rooms were used in two trials lasting 51 and 65 days, respectively. Treatments of 0 (control), 100 (low dose), and 1000 mites (high dose) per pig were randomly assigned to rooms. Intradermal skin tests with a sterile mite extract were done weekly to assess hypersensitivity. Control pigs never responded to the extract, whereas most infested pigs progressed through phases of (1) no response, (2) delayed hypersensitivity alone, (3)…

Exposure to house-dust mite allergen (Der p I) and the development of asthma in childhood. A prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Children with asthma commonly have positive skin tests for inhaled allergens, and in the United Kingdom the majority of older children with asthma are sensitized to the house-dust mite. In a cohort of British children at risk for allergic disease because of family history, we investigated prospectively from 1978 to 1989 the relation between exposure to the house-dust mite allergen (Der p I) and the development of sensitization and asthma. RESULTS: Of the 67 children studied in 1989, 35 were atopic (positive skin tests), and 32 were nonatopic. Of the 17 with active asth

A survey of vector-borne bacteria in bat-associated mites (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) from Brazil reveals the presence of Ehrlichia spp.

Macronyssid and spinturnicid mites are globally distributed ectoparasites of medical and veterinary relevance, with various species known to parasitize bats. Beyond their ecological importance, some macronyssid mites, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, are known to occasionally bite humans and cause dermatitis, highlighting the interface between wildlife, ectoparasites, and human habitats. Understanding the microorganisms harbored by bat-associated mites is therefore important from a One Health perspective, as these arthropods may act as bridge hosts for pathogens among bats, domestic animals, and h…
