Active surveillance (AS) using repeated biopsies to monitor disease progression has been a popular alternative to immediate surgical intervention in cancer care. However, a biopsy procedure is invasive and sometimes leads to severe side effects of infection and bleeding. To reduce the burden of repeated surveillance biopsies, biomarker-assistant decision rules are sought to replace the fix-for-all regimen with tailored biopsy intensity for individual patients. Constructing or evaluating such decision rules is challenging. The key AS outcome is often ascertained subject to interval censoring. F

In diagnostic studies, researchers frequently encounter imperfect reference standards with some misclassified labels. Treating these as gold standards can bias receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. To address this issue, we propose a novel likelihood-based method under a non-parametric density ratio model. This approach enables the reliable estimation of the ROC curve, area under the curve (AUC), partial AUC, and Youden's index with favorable statistical properties. To implement the method, we develop an efficient expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. Extensive simulations

Missing data in multiple variables is a common issue. We investigate the applicability of the framework of graphical models for handling missing data to a complex longitudinal pharmacological study of children with HIV treated with an efavirenz-based regimen as part of the CHAPAS-3 trial. Specifically, we examine whether the causal effects of interest, defined through static interventions on multiple continuous variables, can be recovered (estimated consistently) from the available data only. So far, no general algorithms are available to decide on recoverability, and decisions have to be made

Estimating parameters corresponding to mean outcomes and their intricate association structures in cluster randomized trials (CRTs) can pose significant methodological challenges. This paper introduces a novel framework that leverages network concepts to represent complex dependency structures and estimate these parameters using generalized estimating equations (GEE). We focus on modeling complex correlation structures by partitioning observations into potentially overlapping groups of interrelated data, where observations are assumed locally exchangeable within each group. This network GEE fr

The Ising model has become a popular psychometric model for analyzing item response data. The statistical inference of the Ising model is typically carried out via a pseudo-likelihood, as the standard likelihood approach suffers from a high computational cost when there are many variables (i.e., items). Unfortunately, the presence of missing values can hinder the use of pseudo-likelihood, and a listwise deletion approach for missing data treatment may introduce a substantial bias into the estimation and sometimes yield misleading interpretations. This paper proposes a conditional Bayesian fram

BACKGROUND: Quality study monitoring is fundamental to patient safety and data integrity. Regulators and industry consortia have increasingly advocated for risk-based monitoring (RBM) and central statistical monitoring (CSM) for more effective and efficient monitoring. Assessing which statistical methods underpin these approaches can best identify unusual data patterns in multi-center clinical trials that may be driven by potential systematic errors is important.
METHODS: We assessed various CSM techniques, including cross-tests, fixed-effects, mixed-effects, and finite mixture models, across

For academic conferences, when proposals are submit they are often judged using a rating scale on identified criterion by reviewers who have a shared interest and expertise in the area under consideration. Given the multiple and varied reviewers, an analysis of psychometric properties like rater severity and consistency are important. However, many of the problems that plague the conference proposal selection process are the same issues that plague survey research: rater bias/severity, misuse of rating scale, and the use of raw scores as measures. We propose the use of the many-facet Rasch mea

The choice of multi-state models is natural in analysis of survival data, e.g., when the subjects in a study pass through different states like 'Работает', 'in a state of remission', 'relapse' or 'dead' in a health related quality of life study. Competing risks is another common instance of the use of multi-state models. Statistical inference for such event history data can be carried out by assuming a stochastic process model. Under such a setting, comparison of the event history data generated by two different treatments calls for testing equality of the corresponding transition probability m

This paper considers the analysis of multivariate survival data where the marginal distributions are specified by semiparametric transformation models, a general class including the Cox model and the proportional odds model as special cases. First, consideration is given to the situation where the joint distribution of all failure times within the same cluster is specified by the Clayton-Oakes model (Clayton, Biometrika 65:141-151, l978; Oakes, J R Stat Soc B 44:412-422, 1982). A two-stage estimation procedure is adopted by first estimating the marginal parameters under the independence workin

Interval-censored data are commonly found in studies of diseases that progress without symptoms, which require clinical evaluation for detection. Several techniques have been suggested with independent assumption. However, the assumption will not be valid if observations come from clusters. Furthermore, when the cluster size relates to response variables, commonly used methods can bring biased results. For example, in a study on lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic disease where worms make several nests in the infected person's lymphatic vessels and reside until adulthood, the response variable o

Many sports, such as, gymnastics, diving, ski jumping, and figure skating, use judges' scores to determine the winner of a competition. These judges use some type of rating scale when judging performances (e.g., figure skating: 0.0 - 6.0). Sport governing bodies have the responsibility of setting and enforcing quality control parameters for judge performance. Given the judging scandals in figure skating at the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, judge performance in sport is receiving greater scrutiny. The purpose of this article is to illustrate how results from Rasch analyses can be used to provide in-d

Mixed membership models are frequently utilized to capture complex individual heterogeneity in multivariate and longitudinal data. A key aspect of mixed membership modeling involves determining the number of extreme profiles (classes), a task traditionally managed through inefficient criterion-based methods. This task is particularly challenging when the predictors within the models are latent and derived from multiple observed variables using exploratory factor analysis. In this paper, we consider an innovative mixed membership latent variable model, which consists of an exploratory factor mo

In multicenter randomized trials, when effect modifiers have a different distribution across centers, comparisons between treatment groups that average (standardize) effects over centers may not apply to any of the populations underlying the individual centers. In the presence of such heterogeneity, interpreting the evidence produced by a multicenter trial in the context of the local population underlying each center may be necessary. Here, we identify center-specific effects under conditions that are largely supported by the study design and are weaker than those underlying popular methods fo

Missing not at random (MNAR) data pose key challenges for statistical inference because the substantive model of interest is typically not identifiable without imposing further (eg, distributional) assumptions. Selection models have been routinely used for handling MNAR by jointly modeling the outcome and selection variables and typically assuming that these follow a bivariate normal distribution. Recent studies have advocated parametric selection approaches, for example, estimated by multiple imputation and maximum likelihood, that are more robust to departures from the normality assumption c

Although the factor structure of psychosis continues to be debated by taxonomists, recent studies have supported a bifactor model consisting of a general psychosis factor and 5 uncorrelated symptom-specific factors. While this model has received support in clinical samples, it has not been tested at the general population level. Analysis was conducted on Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (N = 34 653). Twenty-two psychotic symptoms were used as observed indicators of psychosis. These items were chosen based on their conceptual similarity to the items

The intense economic growth experienced by Brazil in recent decades and its consequent explosive motorization process have evidenced an undesirable impact: the increasing and unbroken trend in traffic fatality numbers. In order to contribute to road safety diagnosis on a national level, this study presents a research into two main indicators available in Brazil: mortality rate (represented by fatalities per capita) and fatality rate (represented by two sub-indicators, i.e., fatalities per vehicle and fatalities per vehicle kilometer traveled). These indicators were aggregated into a composite

BACKGROUND: It is important to correctly understand the associations among addiction to multiple drugs and between co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders. Substance-specific outcomes (e.g. number of days used cannabis) have distributional characteristics which range widely depending on the substance and the sample being evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: We recommend a four-part strategy for determining the appropriate distribution for modeling substance use data. We demonstrate this strategy by comparing the model fit and resulting inferences from applying four different distributions to m

The assessment of growth during fetal life and childhood commonly relies upon cross'sectional reference ranges or centiles. However, individual sequential predictions may help the timewise assessment of a growth process. In twin pregnancies for example, which are at risk of growth restriction, such predictions may improve the detection of abnormal trajectories. In this article, we present a simple forecasting method, assuming that a given normal individual behaves in the same way as a reference population. We consider, as a prediction in a given individual, the forecast of a future observation
