OBJECTIVES: To evaluate effects of optokinetic and rotational stimulus in individuals with and without motion sickness (MS) using fHIT.
METHODS: The study included subjects aged 18-40; 35 subjects with MS for MS group and 35 subjects without vertigo for control group. Percentage of the correct answer (% CA) with and without optokinetic stimulus (o-fHIT) in the frontal plane in the fHIT test was compared in both groups. In addition, both group subjects were seated on an ordinary rotating office chair. % CA was compared between groups by applying rotational fHIT (r-fHIT) test after the subjects…

BACKGROUND: The visual contribution to the perceptual and postural vertical is mediated by a multisensory integration process and may relate to children's susceptibility to motion sickness that is hypothesized to arise from intersensory conflicts.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the maturation of visual contribution to the perceptual and postural vertical in conjunction with the motion sickness susceptibility in childhood.
METHODS: In 81 healthy children (aged 2-17 years; 57 females), adjustments of the subjective visual vertical and posturographically tested mediolateral displacements of body sway we…

The dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla, the lateral tegmental field (LTF), participates in generating vomiting. LTF neurons exhibited complex responses to vestibular stimulation in decerebrate cats, indicating that they received converging inputs from a variety of labyrinthine receptors. Such a convergence pattern of vestibular inputs is appropriate for a brain region that participates in generating motion sickness. Since responses of brainstem neurons to vestibular stimulation can differ between decerebrate and conscious animals, the current study examined the effects of w…

OBJECTIVE: Space motion sickness is currently treated pharmacologically with the empiric use of the H1 antihistamine promethazine, but use of this intervention is limited by the side effect of significant sedation. This creates a dilemma, as full cognition is particularly important during the same conditions likely to exacerbate the symptoms of space motion sickness. Using overstimulation of the semicircular canals with a rotary chair as a paradigm for space motion sickness, we evaluated four medications, commonly used for the treatment of terrestrial motion sickness and vertigo, for their eff…

It is known that sedation by H1 antihistaminic drugs can be reduced or avoided if slow release formulations are used for their administration, probably because of a slower increase of the drug concentration in plasma and brain. The aim of this study was to compare two different formulations of dimenhydrinate (CAS 523-87-5), a single fast release tablet with three chewing gums (divided dose principle), with regard to their efficacy in a motion sickness model and their detrimental effect on vigilance and central nervous system (CNS) performance. Caloric stimulation of the eardrum (air at 44 degr…

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: A history of motion sickness is one of the patient-related factors associated with postoperative vomiting (POV). This study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of granisetron, droperidol, and metoclopramide for the prevention of POV after tonsillectomy in children with a history of motion sickness.
METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial, 90 pediatric patients, aged 4 to 10 years, received granisetron, 40 microg/kg; droperidol, 50 microg/kg; or metoclopramide, 0.25 mg/kg (n = 30 of each) intravenously after an inhalation induction of anesthesia. Emet…

In alert rabbits, sea sickness induced an increase in the cerebral blood supply, alteration of the ECoG frequency components, bradycardia, hypotension. Different responses of the bioelectrical activity were revealed in summer and winter. The enhancement of bioelectrical activity and blood flow in the motor cortex were shorter than in the auditory and visual areas. These changes become more obvious in repeated fits of sea sickness and gradually reduced later on. In winter, the responses of the rabbit electrophysiological parameters are more obvious and longer lasting than in summer. The blood s

Few studies have evaluated the influence of idiosyncrasies that may influence the judgment of space-time orientation after passive motion. We designed a study to assess the influence of anxiety/depression (which may distort time perception), motion sickness susceptibility (which has been related to vestibular function, disorientation, and to the velocity storage mechanism), and personal habits on the ability to update orientation, after passive rotations in the horizontal plane. Eighty-one healthy adults (22-64 years old) accepted to participate. After they completed an in-house general health…

BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is considered to be an etiologic hormone in motion sickness (MS). The present study was designed to investigate whether individual differences in AVP expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and in modulation on the vestibular nucleus (VN) are involved in MS. Systemic application or microinjection of AVP into rat VN and rotatory stimulus were used to induce conditioned taste aversion (CTA) to 0.15 % saccharin sodium solution as a model of MS.
RESULTS: Intra-VN use of SSR149415, an antagonist of V1b receptors (V1bRs), blunted CTA. AVP inhibited Ca(…

OBJECTIVES: Visually-induced motion sickness (VIMS) remains an unsolved issue when using head-mounted displays (HMD) in immersive virtual reality (VR) systems. We investigate the influence of restricted visual field on sensorimotor incongruence of postural control in an immersive VR environment, as a surrogate marker of VIMS while standing steadily and viewing ambiguous optical-flow visual stimuli.
METHODS: Twenty-seven healthy participants wore HMD and viewed optical flow visual stimuli (called the plaid motion pattern) using a VR system. Visual stimuli were presented on a full-screen displa…

This study investigated the effects of manipulating tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN) histidine decarboxylase (HDC)-lineage neurons, which constitute the major source of central histaminergic neurons, on motion sickness-like behaviors in mice. Using a transgenic mouse line and a cyclic rotational stimulation paradigm, we found that rotational stimulation significantly upregulated Fos expression in the TMN. Silencing of TMN HDC-lineage neurons did not affect conditioned flavor avoidance but significantly reduced retching-like episodes following rotational stimulation. However, mice with TMN HDC-li…

Previous studies have suggested that aldosterone is potentially involved in the development of motion sickness and that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) may inhibit it. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the inhibitory effects of ANP on aldosterone activity in motion sickness and on aldosterone-induced changes in endolymph volume in the inner ear. We found that rotatory stimulation induced an elevation in plasma aldosterone levels, intraperitoneal aldosterone injection caused motion sickness-like responses in both guinea pigs and mice, and ANP inhibited these responses. …

Motion sickness is a physiological condition that negatively impacts a person's comfort and will be an emerging condition in autonomous vehicles without proper countermeasures. The vestibular system plays a key role in the origin of motion sickness. Understanding the susceptibility and (mal) adaptive mechanisms of the highly integrated vestibular system is a prerequisite for the development of countermeasures. We hypothesize a differential association between motion sickness and vestibular function in healthy individuals with and without susceptibility for motion sickness. We quantified vestib…

OBJECTIVE: To identify differentially expressed genes associated with motion sickness (MS) susceptibility in the rat caudal vestibular nucleus.
METHODS: We identified MS susceptible (MSS) and insusceptible (inMSS) rats by quantifying rotation-induced MS symptoms: defecation and spontaneous locomotion activity. Microarray analysis was used to screen differentially expressed genes in the caudal vestibular nucleus (CVN) after rotation. Plasma stress hormones were identified by radioimmunoassay. Candidate genes were selected by bioinformatics analysis and the microarray results were verified by r…

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a key factor triggering discomfort with image viewing systems. Reducing VIMS by shrinking the field of view (FOV) is effective though this increases discomfort through situational awareness loss. This paper derives an objective score from bio-signals to evaluate multifactor discomforts caused by VIMS and FOV. We also investigate the image characteristics that induce discomfort. The subjective score and LF/HFscore ratio index increase with FOV as expected. Another result is that for some image sequences the bio-signal index increases significantly more…
