In multiple sclerosis (MS), nystagmus or internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) are the usual ocular motor dysfunctions. However, in patients with focal brainstem lesions, other rare manifestations may be observed, such as an isolated ocular motor nerve palsy or complex ocular motor disturbances. Although inflammatory demyelination is considered to be the key feature in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis, histopathological investigations and MRI studies recently highlighted the extent of neuronal damage that occurs even in the early stages of the disease. We report the unusual case of a patient with Machado-Joseph disease (MJD; spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) III) and discuss this coincidence in light current pathogenetic paradigms of CNS autoimmunity.

UNLABELLED: The revision of MEDLINE from 1966 to 2003 did not report any association between multiple sclerosis (MS) and Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS). This is a case report of a 51-year-old woman, with history of four recurrent Bell's palsies. In 1999 she developed a right facial paralysis due to a supranuclear pyramidal lesion with right monoparesis. PURPOSE: The aim of the work was to catch the type of damage of optic nerve in the group of patients with multiple sclerosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The examinations were held on 77 eyes of 40 patients with multiple sclerosis. Among them 11 patients had previous optic neuritis, 29 have not problems with vision. Association between neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and multiple sclerosis (MS) has been very rarely described. We report five cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) and three cases of allied demyelinative diseases starting during childhood. Three of the MS patients presented with atypical initial symptoms, such as acute encephalitis or myelitis, making an early clinical diagnosis difficult.
