Dysfunctional breathing (DB) refers to various abnormalities breathing patterns. Whilst a formal definition exists, subsequent research has inconsistently applied or omitted it. As interest in breathing techniques grows among both healthcare professionals and the public, it is important to reach a consensus on DB's definition to ensure effective assessment and treatment. This critical review explores how DB is currently defined and applied within respiratory and musculoskeletal health. A lack of consistency in the literature identified the need for a more comprehensive framework of DB. To addr

INTRODUCTION: Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by premature aging, impacting multiple organ systems, including cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and integumentary. Significant abnormalities in a transgenic mouse model (homozygous G608G mutation), specifically targeting the development of skull and facial bone indices through high-resolution CT scanning and cephalometric analysis.
METHODS: Key measurements include bone thickness, skull volume, and cranial suture integrity. Bone volume increased significantly in HGPS mice by 8 months of age co

Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is an uncommon disease characterized by a failure of the anorectal septum to divide the cloaca and fuse with the cloacal membrane. Complete URSMS is usually lethal in newborn due to severe renal dysfunction and pulmonary hypoplasia. Partial URSMS is compatible with life with a single perineal opening draining a common cloaca with an imperforate anus which amenable to surgical management. Antenatal diagnosis of URSMS is challenging because of multisystem, complex abnormalities involving gastrointestinal, urogenital tract, cardiovascular, and muscul

Footdrop is a common musculoskeletal condition defined by weakness in ankle joint dorsiflexion. Although the etiology varies, footdrop is characterized by specific clinical and gait abnormalities used by the patient to overcome the loss of active ankle dorsiflexion. The condition is often associated with deformity because soft-tissue structures may become contracted if not addressed. Patients may require the use of special braces or need surgical treatment to address the notable level of physical dysfunction. Surgical treatment involving deformity correction to recreate a plantigrade foot alon

Mobius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder with the preliminary diagnostic criteria of congenital facial and abducent nerve palsy. Involvement of other cranial nerves, too, is common. Prevalence rate of this syndrome is approximately 1 in 100,000 neonates. It is of unknown etiology with sporadic occurrence. However, data regarding the occurrence rate in India is limited. Features such as orofacial malformations, limb defects, and musculoskeletal, behavioral, and cognitive abnormalities might be associated. A thorough evaluation to identify the condition and establishing an adequate treatmen

OBJECTIVE: To determine the inter/intraobserver reliability of the tender and swollen joint counts (TJC, SJC) and the modified Rodnan Skin Score (mRSS) in diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc) and to assess content validity of the TJC/SJC.
METHODS: Ten rheumatologists completed the SJC, TJC, and mRSS on 7 patients. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) was performed.
RESULTS: Interobserver and intraobserver reliability for the TJC was 0.97 and 0.99, for the SJC was 0.24 and 0.71, and for the mRSS was 0.81 and 0.94, respectively. MSUS abnormalities did not correspond with SJC/TJC.

Williams syndrome, initially described by Williams, Barratt-Boyes, and Lowe in 1961, consists of characteristic dysmorphic features, congenital heart disease, and distinctive behavioral and emotional traits. In addition to acquired and congenital heart disease, manifestations in the renal, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and central nervous system may have implications during the perioperative period. Congenital and acquired heart disease can be a significant issue as sudden death, related to abnormalities of the coronary arteries, has been reported perioperatively in these patients. The authors p

BACKGROUND: Chronic groin and scrotal pain is a common entity plaguing a significant population of young athletic individuals. Aside from urologic and visceral etiologies, there is a vast array of underlying musculoskeletal and spinal abnormalities that may be found in these individuals.
FINDINGS: Presented is a patient found to have chronic, spine-related groin and scrotal pain diagnosed with lower lumbar discogenic disease by physical examination findings, imaging studies and multi-level chronic radiculopathy by electrodiagnostic studies who was treated with twitch-obtaining intramuscular s

After reviewing the main features of the Marfan syndrome (musculoskeletal, ocular, cardiovascular, pulmonary abnormalities), its autosomal dominant inheritance with high penetrance but variable phenotype and presence of "soft" conditions preventing an easy diagnosis, the authors report their own data relevant to 73 probands: ratio of each clinical manifestation, state of 34% of familial cases and display of a paternal age effect in the sporadic cases. The pathogenic defect is unknown as like the location of the gene. The difficulties of the genetic counseling are then approached: unpredictabil

Eight cases of the fetal alcohol syndrome are presented with emphasis on their frequent orthopedic anomalies, i.e. hypoplastic toenails (100%), shortened fingers, usually the fifth (75%), radioulnar synostosis, camptodactyly of fingers, clinodactyly of toes, and flexion contractures of the elbow (all 50%). These are in addition to 7 other orthopedic anomalies observed less frequently and some 18 general characteristics had an extensive endocrine, biochemical and genetic work-up and no abnormalities were found to explain the snydrome other than the teratogenicity of the maternal alcohol abuse.

We describe a 3(1/2)-year-old girl with psychomotor and mental retardation; dysmorphic features, including a high forehead with bitemporal narrowing; a broad nasal bridge and a broadened nose; downslanting palpebral fissures; abnormal ears; vertebral abnormalities; cardiac defect; genital hypoplasia; and anal abnormalities. The karyotype of our patient (550 bands) was normal. Molecular cytogenetic techniques, including comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), revealed that this girl was a carrier of a de novo derivative chromosome 7 arising from a

We report the case of a 23-month-old male with hypotonia, developmental delay, and complex seizures. Radiographs revealed profound sclerosis of the metaphyses and epiphyses of the long and short bones in the extremities, with a unique pattern of distribution. Sclerosis also involved the anterior ribs, iliac crests, talus, and calcaneus. The skull and vertebral bodies appeared unaffected. Blood lead levels were normal. We believe that this constellation of clinical and radiographic abnormalities closely resembles osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia (OMD) due to an autosomal recessive defect. C

An outbreak of congenital abnormalities occurred in sheep at San Angelo, Texas, between December 1986 and February 1987. Of 360 lambs born, 19.2% had arthrogryposis or other musculo-skeletal problems and hydranencephaly (AGH), and the total neonatal loss was 25.6%. In 1987, all ewes that were tested with AGH lambs had antibody to Cache Valley virus (CVV), whereas 62% of the ewes with normal lambs had CVV-specific antibody. Pre-colostral serum samples from AGH lambs had neutralizing antibody to CVV. An increase in prevalence of CVV-specific antibody, from 5% during the spring of 1986 to 63.4% d

OBJECTIVES: To investigate radiological sacroiliac abnormalities in IBD patients without musculoskeletal symptoms and to determine the clinical and familiar differences between IBD patients with and without radiologic sacroiliac joint (SIJ) abnormalities. Subsequently, the patients with x-ray alterations were followed for 3 years in order to assess the onset of chronic inflammatory back pain (IBP).
METHODS: 81 patients (55 Crohn-CD- and 26 ulcerative rettocolitis-UC) with remittent and low active IBD, from a tertiary referral centre of Gastroenterology Unit, were studied using SIJ x-rays. Dif

Primary upper limb venous thrombosis is a rare disease usually caused by external compression of the proximal deep upper limb veins from aberrant musculoskeletal anatomy such as cervical ribs, abnormal tendon insertions and hypertrophy of the anterior scalene or subclavius muscles. We present an unusual case of primary upper limb thrombosis caused by compression of the brachiocephalic vein from a sternoclavicular ganglion cyst. This case illustrates the importance of considering a wide differential when searching for a cause of primary upper limb venous thrombosis.

NARRATIVE REVIEW: Focal hand dystonia is a disabling movement disorder, often task specific, that leads to impaired hand use. In addition to a genetic predisposition, environmental risk factors including repetitive use and musculoskeletal constraints are contributory. Although the underlying cause is unknown, recent studies have identified several key mechanisms that may play a part in its genesis. Failure of inhibition, abnormal sensorimotor integration, and maladaptive plasticity seem to be important. Understanding the underlying physiology may lead to the design of novel therapies.

An overview of the clinical entity referred to as developmental flatfoot has been discussed. Specific reference has been made to its occurrence, etiology, identification, pathomechanics, clinical significance, and management rationale. This often overlooked, inconspicuous condition is the most common musculoskeletal abnormality affecting the foot of the child under 6 years of age. Recognition of the fact that the developmental flatfoot is the logical precursor of foot dysfunction, deformity, and resultant disability later in life will allow the practitioner to design a management program for t

Musculoskeletal trauma and its sequelae account for a large proportion of visits to acute health care facilities and practitioners of multiple medical specialties. There is a long-recognized association of posttraumatic pain with herpes zoster and three illustrative cases were encountered. Simple bony, nerve root, or soft-tissue abnormality may be mimicked by various stages of such processes. Serial observations are emphasized and proposed pathophysiology and therapy reviewed. Studies of acute and convalescent complement fixation titers and viral cultures of vesicular fluid in such cases would
