Infection with Mycobacterium avium complex is acquired from the environment, but risk factors for M. avium complex infection and disease are poorly understood. To identify risk factors for infection, the authors performed a 1998-2000 cross-sectional study in western Palm Beach County, Florida, using a population-based random household survey. M. avium complex infection was identified by use of the M. avium sensitin skin test. BACKGROUND: Persistent cutaneous infections with Mycobacterium marinum can follow exposure of injured skin to contaminated water or fish, and can be treated with second-generation tetracyclines in addition to other antimicrobials. Due to the rarity of this infection, there are few data comparing the different treatment alternatives.
METHODS: We report a patient with culture-proven M. marinum who was treated with two different second-generation tetracyclines.

Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is one of the most widely used vaccines. Modern techniques in genome manipulation allow the construction of recombinant (r)-BCG strains that can be employed as highly immunogenic vaccines against tuberculosis (TB) with an enhanced safety profile. In addition, the development of novel procedures to cultivate BCG will allow the large-scale production of future BCG-based vaccines.

Endocarditis due to Mycobacterium fortuitum complex is a rare entity generally linked to the hospital environment. Only 18 cases have been published since 1966. Here we present a case of a female who developed an endocarditis due to Mycobacterium chelonae after valve replacement as well as a review of the literature. Mycobacterium mucogenicum is a recently characterized, rapid-growing mycobacteria rarely seen in human infections. We describe the case of a 51-year-old man with rapidly progressive granulomatous hepatitis caused by M. mucogenicum. Although premortem evaluation failed to identify an etiologic agent, autopsy liver cultures produced smooth, rapid-growing mycobacterial colonies. Biochemical, growth, and cell wall fatty acid characteristics were consistent with the identification of M. mucogenicum.

A simple procedure was developed to defect infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis by detecting its antigens in the urine. Prolonged higher urinary antigen titers after tuberculin are suggestive of its great effect on the child. The fact that Mycobacterium antigen titers are equal in BCG-vaccinated children with positive and negative Mantoux tests proposes to change the approach to substantiating revaccinations.
