This study presents a report on the first clinical experiences gained in 68 hospitalized HIV antibody-positive patients from Austria, covering a period of twelve months. 36 patients (52.9%) belonged to risk group I or Ib (homo- or bisexual), whereas 26 (38.2%) patients were i.v. drug abusers (risk group II). 5 (7.4%) patients fulfilled the criteria of stage II of the CDC classification of HIV-associated clinical symptoms, 10 (14.7%) were classified as stage III and the remaining 53 patients (78%) as stage IV. CONTEXT: -Numerous histomorphologic and staging classifications of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) have been proposed during the last century, suggesting that the classification of these tumors is challenging and controversial. Difficulties of classifying TETs include various combinations of epithelial cells and lymphocytes and the paucity of these tumors. The prognostic significance, specifically of the histomorphologic classifications, has been debated. Malignant diseases of the lungs and pleura are common causes of morbidity and mortality throughout the developed world. Determining the appropriate treatment strategies for an individual patient requires a multidisciplinary approach integrating input from many disciplines including pathology. In this overview, we discuss diagnosis of lung and pleural malignancy from the pathologist's perspective, placing particular emphasis on methods available to obtain material for pathological assessment, and their implications for diagnosis and provision of information to guide patient management.

Although thymomas are rare neoplasms, they are the most common tumor of the anterior mediastinum in adults. Preferred therapy for these neoplasms is complete surgical resection. If a thymoma cannot be completely resected, postoperative radiotherapy may produce satisfactory results in controlling the tumor. Significant 5- and 10-year survival rates have been recorded for patients with advanced thymomas who have been treated by radiation therapy alone. 18 F-PSMA 1007 is an established tracer for staging intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer. Besides prostate cancer cells, benign tumors and inflammations/infections can show unspecific PSMA uptake. We present a case of incidental PSMA uptake of the appendix revealing a globet cell adenocarcinoma in histology after surgical resection. Globet cell tumors are rare neoplasms of the appendix. Patients with incidental PSMA uptake in the appendix should undergo further work-up.

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) is a rare BCR-ABL negative myeloproliferative neoplasm that usually affects older adults with a poor prognosis. Leukemia cutis is an extramedullary manifestation of leukemia and may be misdiagnosed by dermatologists. Here, we describe a case of CNL in a 6-year-old Chinese girl with leukemia cutis as the first manifestation. Her skin rashes failed to attract the attention of dermatologists in early stages. The diagnosis was confirmed by peripheral smear, bone marrow studies, genomic analysis and skin biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the breast is extremely rare, especially that not associated with multiple myeloma.
CASE: A case of plasmacytoma of the breast in a 73-year-old man was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Aspiration smears revealed a dispersed population of plasmacytoid cells at various stages of maturation. The tumor was excised, and the histologic sections confirmed the cytologic diagnosis.

The carotid bodies, located at the bifurcation of the carotid arteries, rarely develop neoplasms or carotid body tumors. The most interesting aspects of this rare tumor are its anatomical location, familial tendency, physiologic alterations related to removal, and surgical management. Tumors of the carotid body can occur alone or bilaterally. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential so that resection can be done in the early stage of the disease. Nurses must be aware of the risks and potential complications that may be encountered after surgical excision of this tumor.

42 patients of midline malignant histiocytosis are reported. The differential diagnosis should be made carefully, for its clinical sign and pathologic picture are similar to some neoplasms, inflammatory or allergic diseases. The 3, 5 and 10 year survival rates are 52.4%, 38.1% and 21.4% respectively. The survival rate of those in the prodromal stage is the highest. The authors suggest that this disease probably belongs to the malignant tumor of mononuclear macrophage system and be a special type of malignant histiocytosis. It may be designated as the midline malignant histiocytosis.
