Abnormal axillary lymph nodes on negative mammograms: causes other than breast cancer.

Enlargement of lymph nodes can be due to a variety of benign and malignant causes. The most common malignant cause is invasive ductal carcinoma, which is usually visualized with mammography. Excluding breast cancer, other causes of abnormal lymph nodes that produce a negative mammogram include lymphoma, metastases from other malignancies, and benign etiologies such as inflammatory processes, infectious diseases, collagen vascular diseases, and miscellaneous causes. In this essay, we described common causes of abnormal axillary lymph nodes on negative mammograms excluding breast cancer.

Immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: A case of pleural metastases.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMCS) is an undifferentiated mesenchymal malignancy; however, its immune microenvironment remains to be elucidated. The case of a 34-year-old woman who developed EMCS metastasizing to the pleura is presented here. The pleural EMCS showed hypervascularity, absent PD-L1 expression, and a lack of tumor mutational burden and pathogenic variants. Immunohistological examination of the pleural lesions showed predominant M2 macrophages and sparse CD8+ T cells. EMCS and the tumor stroma were positive for transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and vascular endothelia

Body mass index and risk of over 100 cancer forms and subtypes in 4.1 million individuals in Sweden: the Obesity and Disease Development Sweden (ODDS) pooled cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity, assessed by body mass index (BMI), is an established risk factor for 13 cancers. We aimed to identify further potential obesity-related cancers and to quantify their association with BMI relative to that of established obesity-related cancers. METHODS: Using Cox regression models on 4,142,349 individuals in Sweden (mean age 27.1 years at weight measurement), we calculated hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between BMI and the risk of 122 cancers and cancer subtypes, grouped by topography and morphology. Cancers with a positive association (i.e., HR >1) at an α-level

Cylicospirura felineus in Puma (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) in southern Brazil - Macroscopic and microscopic aspects.

Parasites of the Cylicospirura genus are known to affect domestic and wild carnivores by causing the formation of nodules within the gastric mucosa and pyloric region of parasitized animals. C. felineus is a specimen of this genus that has been reported in Brazil in animal species such as Leopardus geoffroyi and Puma concolor. However, as far as the authors of the present study are aware, reports of C. felineus in jaguarundis (Puma yagouaroundi) do not yet exist. This wild feline species native to the Americas is found only in a few countries - and it is possibly extinct in others, such as the

High-cost users: drivers of inpatient healthcare expenditure concentration in urban China.

BACKGROUND: Total healthcare expenditures are concentrated among a small number of patients. To date, studies on the concentration of health care expenditures in developing countries are limited, mainly focusing on concentration measures and the demographic, clinical and socioeconomic characteristics of high-cost users (HCU). The drivers of the skewed overall distribution of health care expenditures are opaque. Using inpatient administrative claims data, this study provides new evidence on the concentration of healthcare expenditures in China; the demographic and clinical characteristics of hi

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors with prominent myxoid matrix. Clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study of nine cases of a distinctive morphologic variant of myogenic stromal tumor.

Nine cases are presented of a distinctive morphologic variant of myogenic gastrointestinal stromal tumor characterized by an unusually prominent myxoid stromal background reminiscent of a neural neoplasm but lacking the immunohistochemical or ultrastructural features of peripheral nerve sheath or ganglionic differentiation. The patients included six women and three men aged 42 to 86 years (mean, 70). The lesions occurred in the stomach (seven cases) and small intestine (two cases) and ranged in size from 2.5 to 9.5 cm. They were described grossly as well circumscribed, unencapsulated, with a p

Oncogenic osteomalacia: two case reports with surprisingly different outcomes.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome of acquired hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, resulting from a deficit in renal tubular phosphate reabsorption, in which fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) seems to be implicated. This condition is usually associated with a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor of mixed connective tissue located in the bone or soft tissue. The clinical and the radiologic findings are the same as those seen in osteomalacia, and the biochemical features include renal phosphate loss, low serum phosphate and 1,25-(OH)(2) vitD(3) levels, increased alkaline phosphatase

Cytomorphological spectrum of hand, wrist, and foot lesions at tertiary care center in central India.

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) being a fast technique is used as a primary investigation to diagnose wide spectrum of hand, wrist, and foot lesions. These sites are prone to trauma, reparative, and infectious process, which forms mass lesions mimicking neoplasia. Our study highlighted the importance of FNAC with the chance of reduction in biopsy or excision. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To report the prevalence and cytomorphological spectrum of hand and foot lesions with the aim of consolidating the diagnostic potential and also correlate the cytological evaluation with histopatho

Carnoy's Solution for the Management of a Pediatric Patient with Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor: A Case Report with 2-year Follow-up.

AIM: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a slow-growing, rare lesion that arises from the odontogenic epithelium. It predominantly involves the bone that supports teeth and exhibits different levels of inductive alterations within the connective tissue. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old female presented with a missing lower left front tooth since birth. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) revealed an odontogenic neoplasm with respect to the retained deciduous teeth. Under local anesthesia, enucleation of the lesion was carried out followed by application of Carnoy's solution. The diagnosis

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma: A short review.

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma (MCPM) is a rare neoplasm, predominantly affecting female patients during their reproductive years. The lesion is usually distributed diffusely in the abdomen and pelvis, but the peritoneum of the pelvic organs is the most common site. MCPM is composed of fluid-filled translucent cysts, connected by varying amounts of fibrous tissue, and lined by a layer of mesothelial cells. Because of the rarity of this disease, the pathogenesis and natural history of MCPM remain poorly understood and continuously debated. Some authors consider it to be a reactive process

Primary solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) in the retroperitoneum.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an infrequent but distinct neoplasm, which generally arises from submesothelial connective tissue in the pleura. SFT is rarely recognized in extrathoracic sites, and histologically identical conditions have also been reported in the retroperitoneum, although their pathophysiology has not been extensively investigated. METHODS: We present four cases of primary SFT in the retroperitoneum, and review 37 similar cases in the previous literature. RESULTS: About 40% of patients were asymptomatic, and 19.2% and 15.4% presented with an abdominal mass and u

UNLABELLED: We reported a single-center retrospective cohort study on 117 patients of Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) to summarize our experience with TIO over the past decade. The clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Together, our data demonstrate the characteristics and prognosis of TIO and unveil a possible TIO management process. INTRODUCTION: TIO is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that ultimately results in debilitating musculoskeletal deficits and regressive activity obstacles due to hypophosphatemia. The diagnosis and treatment of TIO

Long-Term Follow-Up Data of Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia Managed with Surgery and/or Radiofrequency Ablation from a Single Center.

Data on radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) are restricted to case reports (~ 11 patients) and long-term follow-up data are further scarce. We describe our experience on managing TIO from a tertiary care center in India. Retrospective study of patients with localized TIO was performed and clinical, biochemical, treatment and follow-up details were retrieved. Normalization of serum phosphorus in absence of phosphate supplementation was defined as remission. Of 33 patients (23 males), 24 patients underwent surgery as first-line treatment, and early remission, delaye

Localization of Oncogenic Osteomalacia by Systemic Venous Sampling of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23.

PURPOSE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is characterized by hypophosphatemia caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor. While surgical resection of the tumor leads to a cure, identification of the responsible tumor is challenging. Recently, several studies showed that systemic sampling of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is helpful for localization of tumors. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of this method in Korean patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients compatible with TIO who were admitted to our hospital between 2006 and 2015 were analyzed. Systemic ven

CD56 may be a more useful immunohistochemical marker than somatostatin receptor 2A for the diagnosis of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are the most typical cause of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) associated with mesenchymal neoplasms. Specifically, TIO is attributed to the production of phosphatonins, such as fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), participating in the homeostasis of phosphate. Although immunohistochemistry (IHC) for FGF23 showed characteristic positive staining in PMTs, FGF23 antibodies that can be used for the reliable diagnosis of PMTs are hard to obtain in common pathology laboratories. Somatostatin receptor 2A (SSTR2A) has been previously proposed as an alternatively
