OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in initial staging of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and its impact on changing the management compared to other conventional methods.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 31 patients (21 male and 10 female), mean age 49.3 ± 12.1 years with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (nasopharynx was the commonest cancer in 15 patients (48.4%), poorly differentiated grade represented 64.5% of all tumors. BACKGROUND: Optically clear cytoplasm may occur in neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions, either as a characteristic feature of a disease entity or as a morphologic rarity, potentially creating diagnostic dilemmas in various organ systems. The hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour (HPT-JT) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by occurrence of parathyroid tumours, often atypical adenomas and carcinomas, ossifying jaw fibromas, renal tumours and uterine benign and malignant neoplasms. HPT-JT is caused by mutations of the cell division cycle 73 (CDC73) gene, located on chromosome 1q31.2 and encodes a 531 amino acid protein, parafibromin. Approximately 5-15% of all dermatologic malignancies manifest in the upper and lower eyelids. The primary types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and sebaceous cell carcinoma, with Merkel cell carcinoma and melanoma following closely behind. Basal cell carcinoma predominantly affects the lower eyelid, yet various other carcinomas, melanomas, metastases, and neoplasms of diverse origins can arise on both upper and lower eyelids. Risk factors such as advanced age, smoking, and notably, exposure to UV light significantly contribute to the development of these eyelid lesions.
