Neurological Manifestations of Myocarditis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review discusses the neurological complications associated with myocarditis of different etiologies. RECENT FINDINGS: Myocarditis can be idiopathic or caused by different conditions, including toxins, infections, or inflammatory diseases. Clinical findings are variable and range from mild self-limited shortness of breath or chest pain to hemodynamic instability which may result in cardiogenic shock and death. Several neurologic manifestations can be seen in association with myocarditis. Tissue remodeling, fibrosis, and myocyte dysfunction can result in heart fai

Neurologic Disorders of the Foal.

Neurologic disease of foals is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for veterinarians. Disease conditions such as neonatal encephalopathy are seen as well as developmental and congenital defects, bacterial infections, and trauma. Neonatal encephalopathy can be considered a "syndrome" with a variety of causes resulting in a similar clinical presentation. These causes can be categorized as maladaptation, hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy, and metabolic abnormalities, all leading to signs of cerebral and brainstem disease. Spinal cord signs may occasionally be seen, but these signs are usually ov

Mitophagy in neurological disorders.

Selective autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that removes excess protein aggregates and damaged intracellular components. Most eukaryotic cells, including neurons, rely on proficient mitophagy responses to fine-tune the mitochondrial number and preserve energy metabolism. In some circumstances (such as the presence of pathogenic protein oligopolymers and protein mutations), dysfunctional mitophagy leads to nerve degeneration, with age-dependent intracellular accumulation of protein aggregates and dysfunctional organelles, leading to neurodegenerative disease. However, when path

Insomnia in neurological diseases.

Insomnia is defined as difficulties of initiating and maintaining sleep, early awakening and poor subjective sleep quality despite adequate opportunity and circumstances for sleep with impairment of daytime performance. These components of insomnia - namely persistent sleep difficulties despite of adequate sleep opportunity resulting in daytime dysfunction - appear secondary or co-morbid to neurological diseases. Comorbid insomnia originates from neurodegenerative, inflammatory, traumatic or ischemic changes in sleep regulating brainstem and hypothalamic nuclei with consecutive changes of neur

Neurologic complications of myocarditis.

Myocarditis, a nonischemic acquired cardiomyopathy, is an uncommon condition with multiple presentation patterns which may be initially difficult to recognize and may simulate other conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, pericarditis, septicemia, etc. There are four distinct clinical presentation patterns that include: (1) low-grade nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue; (2) symptoms that resemble an acute myocardial infarction, especially in younger individuals; (3) a heart failure presentation which may be acute, subacute, or chronic and may be associated with cardiac conduction syst

Neurological complications of cardiomyopathies.

There is a multifaceted relationship between the cardiomyopathies and a wide spectrum of neurological disorders. Severe acute neurological events, such as a status epilepticus and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, may result in an acute cardiomyopathy the likes of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Conversely, the cardiomyopathies may result in a wide array of neurological disorders. Diagnosis of a cardiomyopathy may have already been established at the time of the index neurological event, or the neurological event may have prompted subsequent cardiac investigations, which ultimately lead to the dia

[Neurological symptoms of hypomagnesemia].

BACKGROUND: An epileptic seizure is a common neurological presentation in the Emergency Department (ED). Electrolyte disturbances are an important cause of neurological symptoms like seizures and hypomagnesemia is one of them. PPI's can cause hypomagnesemia and are readily prescribed. Therefore patients taking PPI's are at risk of developing neurological symptoms due to hypomagnesemia. CASE: A 82-year old woman was seen in ED with a history of nausea, vomiting and vertigo. A vertical nystagmus was observed with attacks of mydriasis followed by a phase of encephalopathy and restlessness. These

Autoantibodies in neurological disease.

The realization that autoantibodies can contribute to dysfunction of the brain has brought about a paradigm shift in neurological diseases over the past decade, offering up important novel diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities. Detection of specific autoantibodies to neuronal or glial targets has resulted in a better understanding of central nervous system autoimmunity and in the reclassification of some diseases previously thought to result from infectious, 'idiopathic' or psychogenic causes. The most prominent examples, such as aquaporin 4 autoantibodies in neuromyelitis optica or NMDAR a

[Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes].

Neurological paraneoplastic syndromes are non-metastatic complications of systemic cancers, often resulting from an immune response triggered by the crossed expression of neuronal antigens by tumour cells. Several neurological syndromes such as cerebellar degeneration, sensory neuronopathy, limbic encephalitis, encephalomyelitis or the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome are most often paraneoplastic and require prompt cancer screening, particularly if the patient shows risk factors for cancer. Although there are many exceptions to this rule, a given syndrome is often associated with a particula

Curcumin and neurological diseases.

Objectives: The beneficial effects of many substances have been discovered because of regular dietary consumption. This is also the case with curcumin, whose effects have been known for more than 4,000 years in Eastern countries such as China and India. A curcumin-rich diet has been known to counteract many human diseases, including cancer and diabetes, and has been shown to reduce inflammation. The effect of a curcumin treatment for neurological diseases, such as spinal muscular atrophy; Alzheimer's disease; Parkinson's disease; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; multiple sclerosis; and others, h

Neurological Complications of Leprosy.

Leprosy is a challenging international health concern. Despite tremendous efforts in reducing worldwide disease prevalence in the past decades, some countries remain endemic and are plagued by high levels of disability. The neurological complications of leprosy are varied and complex, with current research focused on evaluating tools for earlier diagnosis of neuropathy, especially in resource-limited countries. While treatment with multidrug therapy is highly effective, active research aims to simplify regimens to improve adherence, minimize adverse effects, and prevent antimicrobial resistanc

Neurologic examination in the elderly.

Clinical evaluation of neurologic disorders in the elderly requires seeking a thorough history and performing an age-appropriate neurologic examination with special attention to changes that occur with normal aging. The history should be obtained from the patient as well as collateral sources close to the patient to ensure accuracy and should include contextual elements such as medical history, social, economic, and psychological background, as well as an assessment of current functional state beyond activities of daily living. The safety of the patient, including the presence of physical, psy

Neurochondrin neurological autoimmunity.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the neurologic spectrum and treatment outcomes for neurochondrin-IgG positive cases identified serologically in the Mayo Clinic Neuroimmunology Laboratory. METHODS: Archived serum and CSF specimens previously scored positive for IgGs that stained mouse hippocampal tissue in a nonuniform synaptic pattern by immunofluorescence assay (89 among 616,025 screened, 1993-2019) were reevaluated. Antibody characterization experiments revealed specificity for neurochondrin, confirmed by recombinant protein assays. RESULTS: IgG in serum (9) or CSF (4) from 8 patients yielded iden

Neurological Manifestations of Achondroplasia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is to delineate the neurological complications seen in patients with achondroplasia. RECENT FINDINGS: As the understanding of the genetics of this disorder has advanced, the possibility of targets for intervention which might modify the development and management of the neurological complications of this disease may be identified. Achondroplasia is a hereditary short-limbed dwarfism which has been known for millennia. The genetic defect is a gain of function sequence variation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). This gene normally regulates (inhi

Athletes with neurologic disease.

Neurologic disease does not discriminate, even among athletes. Common neurologic diseases among athletes include multiple sclerosis, seizures, headaches, and sleep disorders. Although concrete guidelines for sport participation among athletes with neurologic diseases do not exist, evidence-based and consensus statements can aid healthcare providers in determining whether and to what extent such athletes should participate in sports. Moreover, sport participation is important, since multiple studies indicate that exercise improves disease-specific symptoms, manifestations, and overall quality o

Immunoadsorption in neurological disorders.

In recent years, immunoadsorption has been increasingly recognized as an alternative to therapeutic plasma exchange and used for the treatment of neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, myasthenia gravis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders, and multiple sclerosis, as well as autoimmune encephalitis. Unlike therapeutic plasma exchange, which requires fluid replacement with a blood solution such as fresh frozen plasma or albumin, immunoadsorption is a blood purification technique that enables the selective removal of humoral
