Intracortical and Thalamocortical Connections of the Hand and Face Representations in Somatosensory Area 3b of Macaque Monkeys and Effects of Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries.

Brains of adult monkeys with chronic lesions of dorsal columns of spinal cord at cervical levels undergo large-scale reorganization. Reorganization results in expansion of intact chin inputs, which reactivate neurons in the deafferented hand representation in the primary somatosensory cortex (area 3b), ventroposterior nucleus of the thalamus and cuneate nucleus of the brainstem. A likely contributing mechanism for this large-scale plasticity is sprouting of axons across the hand-face border. Here we determined whether such sprouting takes place in area 3b. We first determined the extent of int

Firing probability and mean firing rates of human muscle vasoconstrictor neurones are elevated during chronic asphyxia.

Elevated muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) features in many cardiovascular diseases, but how this sympathoexcitation is brought about differs across pathologies. Unitary recordings from post-ganglionic muscle vasoconstrictor neurones in human subjects have shown that the augmented MSNA in the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with an increase in firing probability and mean firing rate, and an increase in multiple within-burst firing. Here we characterize the firing properties of muscle vasoconstrictor neurones in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (

Spinal hyperexcitability and bladder hyperreflexia during reversible frontal cortical inactivation induced by low-frequency electrical stimulation in the cat.

Spinal hyperexcitability and hyperreflexia gradually develop in the majority of stroke patients. These pathologies develop as a result of reduced cortical modulation of spinal reflexes, mediated largely indirectly via relays in the brainstem and other subcortical structures. Cortical control of spinal reflexes is markedly different in small animals, such as rodents, while in some larger species, such as cats, it is more comparable to that in humans. In this study, we developed a novel model of stroke in the cat, with controllable and reversible inhibition of cortical neuronal activity appearin

Activation of medial olivocochlear efferent system in humans: influence of stimulus bandwidth.

The activity of the medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) can be studied in humans through variations in the level of evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) elicited by contralateral acoustic stimuli (CAS). The present study sought to investigate how the activity of the MOC system at a given frequency, as measured through the contralateral suppression of tone-pip EOAEs, depends on the bandwidth of the contralateral stimulus. EOAEs were recorded in 155 normal-hearing subjects, successively with and without contralateral stimuli whose bandwidth, center frequency and level were systematically varied.

Localization of pontine PGO wave generation sites and their anatomical projections in the rat.

A number of experimental and theoretical reports have suggested that the ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave-generating cells are involved in the generation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and REM sleep dependent cognitive functions. No studies to date have examined anatomical projections from PGO-generating cells to those brain structures involved in REM sleep generation and cognitive functions. In the present study, pontine PGO wave-generating sites were mapped by microinjecting carbachol in 74 sites of the rat brainstem. Those microinjections elicited PGO waves only when made in the dorsa

Importance of brain-gut axis in the gastroprotection induced by gastric and remote preconditioning.

Limitation of the damage to the organs such as heart, liver, intestine, stomach and brain by an earlier brief complete occlusion of their arteries is defined as ischemic preconditioning (IP). No study so for has been undertaken to check whether brain-gut axis is involved in the gastroprotection exhibited by gastric IP or in that induced by repeated brief episodes of ischemia of remote organs such as heart and liver. This study was designed to determine the possible involvement of vagal and sensory afferent nerves, in the mechanism of gastric and remote organ IP on the gastric mucosa in rats ex

Reflex discharge patterns of cardiac vagal efferent fibres.

1. Unit activity was recorded from single and few fibre preparations in a cardiac branch of the right vagus nerve of the cat.2. Increases in blood pressure mediated solely by the right carotid sinus nerve produced bradycardia when all other nerves to the heart had been cut. Myelinated fibres in the cardiac branch of the right vagus nerve were reflexly activated by the same procedure.3. The fibres were silent when blood pressure was below 140-150 mm Hg. As the pressure began to rise, they discharged phasically with the cardiac cycle. At pressures greater than 180 mm Hg, the discharge was contin

Anatomy of the median nerve and its clinical applications.

The median nerve is a mixed sensory and motor nerve. It is classically described as the nerve of pronation, of thumb, index finger, middle finger and wrist flexion, of thumb antepulsion and opposition, as well as the nerve of sensation for the palmar aspect of the first three fingers. It takes its name from its middle position at the end of the brachial plexus and the forearm. During its course from its origin at the brachial plexus to its terminal branches, it runs through various narrow passages where it could be compressed, such as the carpal tunnel or the pronator teres. The objective of t

Pain Modulation and the Transition from Acute to Chronic Pain.

There is now increasing evidence that pathological pain states are at least in part driven by changes in the brain itself. Descending modulatory pathways are known to mediate top-down regulation of nociceptive processing, transmitting cortical and limbic influences to the dorsal horn. However, these modulatory pathways are also intimately intertwined with ascending transmission pathways through positive and negative feedback loops. Models of persistent pain that fail to include descending modulatory pathways are thus incomplete. Although teasing out individual links in a recurrent network is n

The reorganization of motor network in hemidystonia from the perspective of deep brain stimulation.

Hemidystonia is usually 'secondary' to structural lesions within the cortico-striato-pallido-thalamic or the cerebello-thalamo-cortical loops. Globus pallidus internus Deep Brain Stimulation (GPi DBS) is a validated technique in the treatment of primary dystonia and still under assessment for secondary dystonia. Results of DBS in hemidystonia are limited and heterogeneous. Further knowledge concerning motor network organization after focal brain lesions might contribute to the understanding of this mitigated response to DBS and to the refinement of DBS indications and techniques in secondary d

Lack of the cerebral peduncle involvement in a series of adult supratentorial AVM: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Congenital as arteriovenous malformation(AVM) is, most patients with AVM would be asymptomatic until adults. During the past 2 years, 23 cases of adult supratentorial AVM patients had DTI after admission. The region of interest was placed in the cerebral peduncle. Their FA value and fiber number was compared with those of cavernous malformation (CM) and tumor (glioma and meningioma). In the AVM group, there was no significant difference in FA of the cerebral peduncle (ipsilateral 0.758±0.055 versus contralateral 0.755±0.049; P>0.05) and fiber number (319.6±82.9 versus 304.7±89.1; P>0.05). Effects of anesthesia on efferent-mediated adaptation of the DPOAE.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) adapt after primary tone onset, with an approximately 100 ms time constant, due to feedback effects of medial olivocochlear (MOC) activity elicited by the primary tones. We tracked DPOAE postonset adaptation as a metric of MOC reflex strength, before during and after induction of anesthesia in guinea pigs. Reflex strength was significantly diminished by the barbiturate/neuroleptic anesthesia most commonly used in this species. The MOC reflex recovered more slowly than toe-pinch or startle reflexes, correlating better with recovery of general mob

Descending projections from the nucleus raphe obscurus to pudendal motoneurons in the male rat.

Previous physiological and behavioral studies have shown that the nucleus raphe obscurus (nRO) modulates pelvic floor reflex function (Yamanouchi and Kakeyama [1992] Physiol. Behav. 51:575-579; Beattie et al. [1996] Soc. Neurosci. Abstr. 22:722.4; Holmes et al. [1997] Brain Res. 759:197-204). In the present study, small injections of fluorescent tracers were used to investigate direct descending projections from the rostral and caudal portions of the brainstem nRO to retrogradely labeled pudendal motoneurons (MN) in the male rat. The caudal nRO projects into the ventral and lateral funiculi of

Mechanisms of nervous propagation along central motor pathways: noninvasive evaluation in healthy subjects and in patients with neurological disease.

Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to scalp stimulation have been obtained in 45 control patients and in 70 patients with neurological diseases. Optimal responses were obtained through a pericranial cathode consisting of 6 to 12 regularly spaced, interconnected pericranial cathodal discs whose resistance was carefully balanced with that of a stimulating anodal disc placed on the appropriate scalp region. The foci of maximal response for proximal and distal upper limb muscles as well as for lower limb muscles were localized. The scalp to cervical cord central conduction time (CCT) along motor tract

The vagal nerves and peptides in the control of extrahepatic biliary motility. An experimental study in the cat.

An in vivo model for the simultaneous study of the motility of the gallbladder, sphincter of Oddi and duodenal wall in the anesthetized cat was developed. Changes in gallbladder volume were recorded as well as changes in the outflow from the sphincter of Oddi and from a vein graft inserted through the duodenal wall during perfusion at constant pressure. The distribution of three peptide hormones (substance P-SP, vasoactive intestinal peptide-VIP and cholecystokinin-CCK) within the feline extrahepatic biliary tree was studied immunocytochemically. Nerve terminals with SP-like immunoreactivity (

Calcitonin gene-related peptide in the audiovestibular system.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to summarize and analyze the current literature related to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), the vestibular system, and vestibular migraine. BACKGROUND: CGRP is a neuropeptide that has been implicated in the pathophysiology of migraine. Vestibular migraine (VM) is a subtype of migraine that causes recurring episodes of vestibular symptoms like vertigo and is often associated with migrainous symptoms. Although the pathophysiology of VM is not completely understood, CGRP expression in the central and peripheral vestibular systems has suggested that it may also

A novel subdivision of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis in monkey, rat, and mouse brains.

The bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) is a critical structure that mediates sustained vigilant responses to contextual, diffuse, and unpredictable threats. Dysfunction of the BST could lead to excessive anxiety and hypervigilance, which are often observed in posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders. Vigilance of potential future threats from the external environment is a basic brain function and probably requires rapid and/or short neural circuits, which enable both quick detection of the potential threats and fast adaptive responses. However, the BST in literature does not appe

Interference with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ in vascular smooth muscle causes baroreflex impairment and autonomic dysfunction.

S-P467L mice expressing dominant negative peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ selectively in vascular smooth muscle exhibit impaired vasodilation, augmented vasoconstriction, hypertension, and tachycardia. We hypothesized that tachycardia in S-P467L mice is a result of baroreflex dysfunction. S-P467L mice displayed increased sympathetic traffic to the heart and decreased baroreflex gain and effectiveness. Carotid arteries exhibited inward remodeling but no changes in distensibility or stress/strain. Aortic depressor nerve activity in response to increased arterial pressure was blunted

Post mortem studies in Parkinson's disease--is it possible to detect brain areas for specific symptoms?

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive neuronal loss associated with Lewy bodies in many subcortical nuclei leading to multiple biochemical and pathophysiological changes of clinical relevance. Loss of nigral neurons causing striatal dopamine deficiency is related to both the duration and clinical stages (severity) of the disease. The clinical subtypes of PD have different morphological lesion patterns: a) The akinetic-rigid type shows more severe cell loss in the ventrolateral part of substantia nigra zona compacta (SNZC) that projects to the dorsal putamen than the medial p

Effect of a continuous peripheral nerve block on the inflammatory response in knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Experimental nerve block in animals inhibits the inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent a 48-hour local anesthetic block of all afferent and efferent nerve fibers of the knee area has an impact on postoperative inflammatory response. METHODS: Twelve patients scheduled for primary total knee arthroplasty received spinal anesthesia, and then were randomly allocated to either patient-controlled analgesia with morphine (n = 6) or a combination of continuous lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve blocks (continuous peripheral nerve bloc
