Ecological risks of microplastics contamination with green solutions and future perspectives.

The rise of plasticulture as mulching material in farming systems has raised concerns about microplastics (MPs) in the agricultural landscape. MPs are emerging pollutants in croplands and water systems with significant ecological risks, particularly over the long term. In the soil systems, MPs polymer type, thinness, shape, and size induces numerous effects on soil aggregates, dissolved organic carbon (C), rapidly oxidized organic C, microbial biomass C, microbial biomass nitrogen (N), microbial immobilization, degradation of organic matter, N cycling, and production of greenhouse gas emission

Simulated CO2 Fertilization Drives Progressive Phosphorus Limitation via Accelerated Organic Cycling in Amazonian Forests.

Tropical forest responses to increasing atmospheric CO2 (iCO2) depend on nutrient constraints, with phosphorus emerging as a central limiting factor. However, current global land models rarely include explicit representations of microbial-driven phosphorus cycling, which is critical in highly weathered tropical soils. Here, we use the QUINCY land surface model coupled with the microbial-explicit Jena Soil Model (JSM) to simulate coupled carbon-nutrient dynamics in Amazon forests along a natural gradient in soil phosphorus availability (40-312 g P m-2). The model reproduced observed patterns of

Separation and recovery of ammonium from industrial wastewater containing methanol using copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) electrodes.

Ammonium is typically removed from wastewater by converting it to nitrogen gas using microorganisms, precluding its recovery. Copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) is known to reversibly intercalate alkali cations in aqueous electrolytes due to the Prussian Blue crystal structure. We used this property to create a carbon-based intercalation electrode within an electrochemical cell. Depending on the electrode potential, it can recover NH4+ from wastewater via insertion/regeneration while leaving organics. In the first phase, different binders were evaluated towards creating a stable electrode matrix,

Diverse and unconventional methanogens, methanotrophs, and methylotrophs in metagenome-assembled genomes from subsurface sediments of the Slate River floodplain, Crested Butte, CO, USA.

We use metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) to understand single-carbon (C1) compound-cycling-particularly methane-cycling-microorganisms in montane riparian floodplain sediments. We generated 1,233 MAGs (>50% completeness and <10% contamination) from 50- to 150-cm depth below the sediment surface capturing the transition between oxic, unsaturated sediments and anoxic, saturated sediments in the Slate River (SR) floodplain (Crested Butte, CO, USA). We recovered genomes of putative methanogens, methanotrophs, and methylotrophs (n = 57). Methanogens, found only in deep, anoxic depths at SR, origi

Zoledronic acid induces apoptosis and S-phase arrest in mesothelioma through inhibiting Rab family proteins and topoisomerase II actions.

Zoledronic acid (ZOL), a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, produced anti-tumor effects through apoptosis induction or S-phase arrest depending on human mesothelioma cells tested. An addition of isoprenoid, geranylgeraniol but not farnesol, negated these ZOL-induced effects, indicating that the ZOL-mediated effects were attributable to depletion of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphates which were substrates for prenylation processes of small guanine-nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (small G proteins). ZOL-treated cells decreased a ratio of membrane to cytoplasmic fractions in RhoA, Cdc42 and Ra

Hydrogen sulfide dynamically upregulates copper uptake and localization.

The reactivity of copper, an essential micronutrient that undergoes facile cycling between Cu 1+ and Cu 2+ redox states, is carefully controlled within the confines of protein binding sites, and by sequestration in storage vesicles, or harnessed to kill pathogens by active pumping of Cu 1+ into phagosomes. We have discovered that hydrogen sulfide, a signaling metabolite generated in copious quantities at the host-microbiome interface, upregulates Cu accumulation in diffusely dispersed puncta across the cell, as visualized by X-ray fluorescence microscopy. The Cu is predominantly in the Cu 2+ s

Cu(I) Is a Game Changer in the Arrest of Cu(Aβ)-Induced ROS Production in the Presence of Competing Zn(II) Ions.

ROS production due to Cu(amyloid-β) redox cycling is proposed to contribute to the oxidative stress observed in Alzheimer's disease brains. We previously reported on a nitrogen and sulfur-containing ligand, L, able to arrest Cu(Aβ)-induced ROS production [Chem. Eur. J. 2023, 29,]. In the present study, the intricate mechanism by which L maintains its protective activity in the presence of Zn, an abundant endogenous metal ion found in the synaptic cleft, is disentangled with the use of complementary spectroscopic and analytical investigations. This mechanism, which we refer to as kinetic Cu(I)

Catalytic generation of N2O3 by the concerted nitrite reductase and anhydrase activity of hemoglobin.

Nitrite reacts with deoxyhemoglobin to form nitric oxide (NO) and methemoglobin. Though this reaction is experimentally associated with NO generation and vasodilation, kinetic analysis suggests that NO should not be able to escape inactivation in the erythrocyte. We have discovered that products of the nitrite-hemoglobin reaction generate dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3) via a novel reaction of NO and nitrite-bound methemoglobin. The oxygen-bound form of nitrite-methemoglobin shows a degree of ferrous nitrogen dioxide (Fe(II)-NO2*) character, so it may rapidly react with NO to form N2O3. N2O3 partit

Heterotrophic inorganic carbon fixation varies with temperature and resource availability in marine and soil bacterial isolates.

Inorganic carbon use in cellular metabolism is ubiquitous in all living organisms. The assimilation of inorganic carbon into biomass via heterotrophic inorganic carbon fixation (HICF) is estimated to contribute significantly to global carbon fixation, yet the controls on this process in strictly heterotrophic microorganisms remain poorly understood. To identify potential drivers of HICF, we cultivated well-characterized heterotrophic Gammaproteobacteria (Pseudomonas putida and Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora) at two temperatures (optimal vs colder) and resource treatments (high vs low organic

Microbial diurnal rhythmicity in the rumen fluid impacted by feeding regimes and exogenous microbiome providing novel mechanisms regulating dynamics of the rumen microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Diurnal oscillations have been reported on ruminal prokaryotes, but the daily rhythmicity of eukaryotes remains unknown. This study investigated diurnal oscillations of ruminal prokaryotes and eukaryotes under three different feeding managements and rumen fluid transplantation conditions, aiming to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms influencing the dynamic shifts of rumen microbiome through the daily feeding cycle. RESULTS: Quantification and profiling of the microbiota of 288 rumen samples collected from lactating dairy cows (n = 12) every 6-h over 48-h feeding cycles under ad l

Interface-engineered tin disulfide and reduced graphene oxide dual coupled hybrid as a binder free current collector for confinement and catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides in lithium sulfur batteries.

The advanced lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries are hindered by lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling. Herein, a flexible self-supporting hybrid current collector dual coupled with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and tin disulfide (SnS2) nanoparticles is rationally constructed via facile hydrothermal and pyrolysis. Aside from generating a three-dimensional (3D) conductive framework, this current collector provides plentiful active sites conducive to sulfur loading. The intimate coupling of polar SnS2, high conductive rGO and robust carbon foam skeleton builds a good interfacial engineerin

3D-Confined Zn Storage via Nitrogen-Doped Bamboo-Derived Hard Carbon Enables Stable and Kinetically Enhanced Zn Anodes.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage, yet their practical application is hindered by Zn dendrites, interfacial corrosion, and sluggish Zn2+ transportation. Herein, we propose a novel 3D confined zinc storage strategy by constructing a nitrogen-doped hard carbon (N-BHC) coating on the Zn anode. The N-BHC features abundant closed pores and uniformly distributed pyridinic N sites, enabling multisynergistic regulation. Specifically, its framework acts as a physical barrier to isolate Zn from electrolytes, suppressing hydrogen evolution and corrosion.

Smart and sustainable production of fertilizer by electrochromic self-perception recovery of ammonium from wastewater.

Ammonium-containing wastewater represents both an environmental burden and a recoverable nitrogen resource. Here we develop an electrochromic self-perception recovery (ECSPR) system that integrates selective intercalation, intrinsic electrochromism and data-driven control for recovering ammonium to produce value-added fertilizer in a smart manner. The system employs a copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) electrode capable of selective NH4+ intercalation (selectivity coefficient of 5-38 versus other cations) with high capacity (2.2-2.7 mmol g-1). Fe-dominated redox conversion with secondary Cu valen

Spike-in quantification reveals biogeography, hotspots, deterministic assembly, and network stability in South China Sea bacterioplankton.

Marine bacterioplankton are critical for biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem health, but traditional relative abundance data fail to capture true microbial loads and their environmental relevance. Using spike-in calibrated absolute quantification and high-throughput sequencing, we investigated surface bacterioplankton communities across the open South China Sea (SCS). Our results showed strong spatial heterogeneity in absolute bacterial abundance. The northern SCS functioned as a biogeochemical hotspot for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling genes due to nutrient inputs from the Pearl River p

Scale-dependent effects of species richness and asynchrony regulate the temporal stability of consumer-mediated nutrient dynamics.

Understanding the factors that regulate ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling, is increasingly important as global change accelerates the degradation and defaunation of ecosystems. In marine ecosystems, fish communities recycle and redistribute nutrients through excretion, directly influencing nutrient dynamics with implications for community dynamics and ecosystem function. The stability of consumer-mediated nutrient dynamics (CND) is threatened as global change disrupts species interactions, rewires food webs, and alters biogeochemical cycles. However, the stability of CND has rarely

Manganese-coupled anaerobic oxidation of methane: Mechanisms, influencing factors and environmental implications.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, and its global budget has attracted wide attention. Manganese-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (Mn-AOM) acts as a critical biological sink for methane emissions and serves as a key link among multiple biogeochemical cycles. Despite its recognized importance, a systematic synthesis of the mechanisms, influencing factors, and environmental implications of Mn-AOM has been lacking. This review summarizes the core microorganisms involved, including anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and metal-reducing bacteria, and examines the electron transfer p

Pyrite fuels electron fluxes to accelerate hydrocarbon removal in coastal wetland soil.

Natural sulfide minerals drive subsurface electron flow, but their role in hydrocarbon turnover is poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether pyrite (FeS2) can sustain electron transfer and accelerate petroleum hydrocarbon degradation in coastal wetland soils using a microbial electrochemical system (MES). High-dose pyrite amendment markedly enhanced long-term voltage output and increased cumulative charge by 34% over 120 days, indicating persistent subsurface electron release. Since pyrite improved soil conductivity and stimulated extracellular electron transfer, as reflected by elevate

Archaeal and Bacterial Communities Within the Wetland Alkaline Har Lake of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.

Har Lake (HL) is in the northeastern basin of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QTP), sits at an altitude of 4379 m, and is classified as a soda lake within a wetland ecosystem. Evaluating the archaeal and bacterial communities in HL could offer valuable insights into the biogeochemical cycling within plateau wetland lakes. Consequently, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was conducted in this study to assess the composition of HL microbial communities and their association with environmental factors. The HL archaeal communities comprised 5 phyla, 5 classes, and 30 genera, while the bacter

The Role of Nanobubbles in Protein Unfolding during Electrothermal Supercharging.

Nanobubbles (NBs) are tiny gas cavities with diameters around 200 nm that remain stable in solution due to their unique properties, including low buoyancy and negative surface charges. Ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) is an alternative buffer to commonly used ammonium acetate during protein analysis by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. The addition of ABC under high voltage and temperature conditions can lead to protein unfolding, a phenomenon termed electrothermal supercharging (ETS). The role of CO2 bubbles in ETS has been hypothesized and disputed. The solution stability of NBs all

"Continuously Touching ROS into NO" by Hemodialysis Membranes for Preventing Hemodialysis-Associated Thrombocytopenia.

Hemodialysis membranes would easily accelerate excessive oxidative stress, leading to platelet adhesion and aggregation, which cause exacerbation of hemodialysis-associated thrombocytopenia. Notably, nitric oxide (NO) gas exerts an inhibitory effect on platelet activation by targeting key signaling molecules. Hence, we propose a strategy to inhibit platelet activation and adhesion by turning "harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS)" into "beneficial NO", thereby preventing hemodialysis-associated thrombocytopenia. In this study, polydopamine-l-arginine (PDA-LA) molecules are coated onto the memb
