Malnutrition in patients with AIDS.

Malnutrition is a frequent problem in persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The origin of malnutrition in patients with AIDS may be multifactorial. The primary mechanisms include disorders of food intake, alterations in intermediary metabolism, and nutrient malabsorption. Attention to the problems of malnutrition in patients with AIDS is of paramount importance because the timing of death in these patients may be more closely related to degree of body cell mass depletion than to any specific underlying infection. Nutritional support can improve nutritional status in selected

[Hydrocephalus during central parenteral feeding. Role of vitamin A poisoning].

Five children receiving central parenteral nutrition presented between the 6th and 16th day of renutrition with hydrocephalus unrelated to intercurrent neurologic disorder. Repeated determinations of plasma retinol and of the transport complex components made the proof of vitamin A intoxication in 2 cases. Vitamin A had been provided in the form of a water-soluble vitamin-solution incorporated in the nutrition mixture (doses: 1,500 micrograms and 3,000 micrograms retinol equivalent respectively). These 2 case reports have to be compared with 3 other cases of hydrocephalus occurring during tota

Reproductive functions in eating disorders.

This article reviews current knowledge about the effects of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and partial syndromes on ovulation, menstruation, sexuality, fertility, pregnancy and fetal-infant health. Eating disorders may result in failure to ovulate, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, reduced sex drive, infertility, hyperemesis gravidarum, low maternal weight gain in pregnancy, small babies for gestational date, low birth weight infants, increased neonatal morbidity and problems in infant feeding. The available information suggests that clinicians should inquire about nutritional intake, a history o

Are protein substitutes available in Italy for infants with inherited metabolic diseases all the same?

INTRODUCTION: Inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) represent a major clinical challenge, especially during the neonatal and infant periods. They require tailored and long-term nutritional management to ensure proper growth and development. Protein substitutes are essential in the dietary treatment of IMDs, particularly aminoacidopathies, organic acidemias, and urea cycle disorders. In Italy, a variety of PSs is available for infants with IMDs requiring a controlled protein and/or amino acid intake; however, differences in their nutritional composition may impact clinical outcomes. This study ai

Nutritional support in critically ill patients with cancer.

Nutritional depletion is a common problem seen in critically ill patients with cancer and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Infection and injury activate a cascade of metabolic events that leads to a poor nutritional state and wasteful energy consumption. The goals of nutritional support entail minimizing starvation, preventing nutrient deficiencies, supporting or improving immune function, and facilitating tissue repair and wound healing. Further understanding of the metabolic changes of illness will improve effective regulation of the inflammatory events occurring in crit

Biochemical indices for the assessment of nutritional status during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: are they worth using? A single center experience.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is being used increasingly in an attempt to cure many hematological disorders, solid tumors and autoimmune diseases. One of the major challenges in the post-transplant period is nutrition. The purpose of this investigation was to assess changes in the biochemical indices of nutritional status during HSCT and compare them with acute-phase protein levels to find the best parameters for nutritional support qualification. Nutritional status was assessed in 54 patients during autologous (30 cases) and allogeneic (24 cases) transplantation. Fifteen pati

Malnutrition Among Children Under Five in Djibouti: A Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure Analysis from the 2023 Multisectoral Survey.

Background/Objectives: Child undernutrition remains a major public health in Djibouti, yet conventional anthropometric indicators may underestimate its true burden by failing to capture overlapping forms of malnutrition. The Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) provides a more comprehensive assessment by identifying children experiencing one or multiple anthropometric deficits. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among children under five years of age in Djibouti using the CIAF. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of data from the

American College of Sports Medicine position stand. The female athlete triad.

The female athlete triad (Triad) refers to the interrelationships among energy availability, menstrual function, and bone mineral density, which may have clinical manifestations including eating disorders, functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. With proper nutrition, these same relationships promote robust health. Athletes are distributed along a spectrum between health and disease, and those at the pathological end may not exhibit all these clinical conditions simultaneously. Energy availability is defined as dietary energy intake minus exercise energy expenditure. Low energy a

The role of prenatal choline and its impact on neurodevelopmental disorders.

Extensive evidence demonstrates that prenatal nutrition is crucial for adequate fetal development. Specifically, maternal choline intake plays a significant role in gene expression, epigenetics, and cell membrane formation. Preclinical models have shown that maternal dietary intake improves the development of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. This review focuses on the role of prenatal choline intake and discusses its potential role in neurodevelopmental disorders especially since choline has emerged as a promising coadjutant to mitigate cognitive and developmental disorders. However, more

An Integrated Nutritional and Physical Activity Approach for Osteosarcopenia.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone strength, which leads to an increased risk of developing fractures. Interestingly, this metabolic disorder is often related to sarcopenia, defined as decreased muscle mass, strength, and function. These two conditions appear to be closely connected, leading to a clinical condition named osteosarcopenia (OS). Aging may explain the link between muscle and bone loss through genetic, mechanical, endocrine, and nutritional factors. Further, aging increases the amount of adipose tissue, often due to sedentary behavior and unbalanced

Behavioral Outbursts in a Child with a Deletion Syndrome, Generalized Epilepsy, Global Developmental Delay, and Failure to Thrive.

A 7-year-old girl with 20q13.33 deletion and a history of generalized convulsive epilepsy presented to the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic due to concerns about her behavioral outbursts in the context of overall delayed development. Evaluation by the Developmental and Behavioral and Gastroenterology teams revealed failure to thrive (FTT) as the primary cause of the behavioral outbursts and developed a high-calorie, high-fat, high-protein nutritional counseling plan. Children who have FTT and a genetic disorder are often thought to not thrive because of their underlying genetic d

Nutrition in Pediatric Cardiomyopathy.

Pediatric cardiomyopathies are heterogeneous groups of serious disorders of the heart muscle and are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality among children who have the disease. While enormous improvements have been made in the treatment and survival of children with congenital heart disease, parallel strides have not been made in the outcomes for cardiomyopathies. Thus, ancillary therapies, such as nutrition and nutritional interventions, that may not cure but may potentially improve cardiac function and quality of life, are imperative to consider in children with all types of car

Review article: mechanisms of action and therapeutic applications of ursodeoxycholic acid in chronic liver diseases.

Ursodeoxycholic acid (ursodiol) is a non-toxic, hydrophilic bile acid used to treat predominantly cholestatic liver disorders. Better understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of ursodeoxycholic acid has helped to elucidate its cytoprotective, anti-apoptotic, immunomodulatory and choleretic effects. Ursodeoxycholic acid prolongs survival in primary biliary cirrhosis and it improves biochemical parameters of cholestasis in various other cholestatic disorders including primary sclerosing cholangitis, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, cystic fibrosis and total parenter
