OBJECT: The purpose was to highlight the diagnosis and treatment of extra-adrenal para-gangliomas, which often causes catecholamine hypersecretion and hypertension.
METHODS: 67 cases of extra-adrenal paraganglioma of retroperitoneum proven pathologically from 1999 to 2009 were reviewed and studied after operation. Endocrine secretion examinations, B-US, CT, MRI, 131-MIBG, octreotide and hands microcirculation inspection were used to diagnose the disease.

Isolated chylopericardium after cardiac surgery is extremely rare, but potentially fatal. We present an unusual case of late postoperative chylopericardium causing cardiac tamponade 6 weeks after mitral valve repair, tricuspid annuloplasty, and left atrial appendage closure through median sternotomy. Emergent pericardiocentesis was performed. Microscopic analysis confirmed the chyle. The patient was successfully managed conservatively with oral dietary manipulation and intravenous octreotide.

We herein report a 30 years old male patient with AIDS and Cryptosporidium diarrhea diagnosed by intestinal biopsy. After some days of unsuccessful conventional anti-diarrheal treatment, an analog of somatostatin (octreotide acetate) Sandostatin was started. The stool volume and the bowel movements decreased dramatically and in spite of some collateral effects the patient could be clinically improved and discharged from the hospital.

Carcinoid tumors stimulate the release of specific hormones that lead to flushing, diarrhea, and bronchospasm. Serotonin is the most significant of these substances. Recently, a somatostatin analogue as well as the longer acting octreotide have been used to inhibit tumor secretions and reduce their untoward actions. This is a case report in which somatostatin was used perioperatively for removal of carcinoid tumors with an uneventful course.

A carcinoid crisis is a severe complication of the carcinoid syndrome that can arise in patients with advanced metastatic neuroendocrine tumors. It can be initiated by stress, catecholamines, and tumor manipulation. In this article, we report a case in which an injection with the catecholamine tracer 6-18F-fluorodihydroxyphenylalanine, used for PET, induced a carcinoid crisis. Octreotide can be used for treatment and should be available. Tracer injection should be slow.

The aim of this study is to characterise somatostatin analogue-responsive headache in acromegaly, hitherto not systematically documented in a significant cohort. Using the UK pituitary network, we have clinically characterised a cohort of 18 patients suffering from acromegaly-related headache with a clear response to somatostatin analogues. The majority of patients had chronic migraine (78%) as defined by the International Headache Society diagnostic criteria.
