Dense optic nerve head deformation estimated using CNN as a structural biomarker of glaucoma progression.

PURPOSE: To present a new structural biomarker for detecting glaucoma progression based on structural transformation of the optic nerve head (ONH) region over time. METHODS: Dense ONH deformation was estimated using deep learning methods namely DDCNet-Multires, FlowNet2, and FlowNetCorrelation, and legacy computational methods namely the topographic change analysis (TCA) and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) methods. A candidate biomarker was estimated as the average magnitude of deformation of the ONH and evaluated using longitudinal confocal scans of 12 laser treated and 12 contralatera

Comparative analysis of retinal photoplethysmographic spatial maps and thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer.

The paper presents a comparative study of the pulsatile attenuation amplitude (PAA) within the optic nerve head (ONH) at four different areas calculated from retinal video sequences and its relevance to the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) changes in normal subjects and patients with different stages of glaucoma. The proposed methodology utilizes processing of retinal video sequences acquired by a novel video ophthalmoscope. The PAA parameter measures the amplitude of heartbeat-modulated light attenuation in retinal tissue. Correlation analysis between PAA and RNFL is performed in ve

Automatic estimation of the cross-sectional area of the waist of the nerve fibre layer at the optic nerve head.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma leads to pathological loss of axons in the retinal nerve fibre layer at the optic nerve head (ONH). This study aimed to develop a strategy for the estimation of the cross-sectional area of the axons in the ONH. Furthermore, improving the estimation of the thickness of the nerve fibre layer, as compared to a method previously published by us. METHODS: In the 3D-OCT image of the ONH, the central limit of the pigment epithelium and the inner limit of the retina, respectively, were identified with deep learning algorithms. The minimal distance was estimated at equidistant angles

The fascicular organisation of the cat optic nerve.

Mammalian optic nerve axons are organised within a fascicular framework. This pattern changes between the eye and the chiasm. For most of the length of the nerve fascicular patterns are apparent, but close to the chiasm, in a region of major fibre rearrangement, the fascicular configuration is lost. It is not known how this change occurs, or whether there are less obvious systematic changes in the number of fascicles or their geometry along the length of the nerve. In this study these questions have been addressed at successive locations along the length of the cat optic nerve. The number of f

In situ analysis of neuronal dynamics and positional cues in the patterning of nerve connections.

Recently developed imaging techniques permit individual cells to be uniquely labeled and followed over time as development proceeds in intact vertebrate embryos. Small groups of cells in the developing eye rudiment of the frog Xenopus have been labeled with the vital dyes DiI, lysinated fluorescein dextran (LFD) or lysinated rhodamine dextran (LRD). Individual optic axons and their growth cones were clearly visible in the intact living animal using confocal microscopy or epifluorescence microscopy with a low light level video camera and computer-based video image enhancement. To follow the dyn

Mask Induction for an Intellectually Disabled Patient With Congenital Infiltrating Lipomatosis of the Face.

Airway management for patients with craniofacial disorders poses many challenges. Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face (CILF) is an extremely rare disorder in which mature lipocytes invade adjacent tissues in the head and neck. The manifestations are typically unilateral, often with associated hypertrophy of both the hard and soft tissues of the face. This is a case report regarding the anesthetic management for a 5-year-old intellectually disabled female with CILF involving the right side of her face who underwent a successful intubated general anesthetic for dental treatment. Awak

Locomotion-Related Population Cortical Ca2+ Transients in Freely Behaving Mice.

Locomotion involves complex neural activity throughout different cortical and subcortical networks. The primary motor cortex (M1) receives a variety of projections from different brain regions and is responsible for executing movements. The primary visual cortex (V1) receives external visual stimuli and plays an important role in guiding locomotion. Understanding how exactly the M1 and the V1 are involved in locomotion requires recording the neural activities in these areas in freely moving animals. Here, we used an optical fiber-based method for the real-time monitoring of neuronal population

Optic radiation injury in patients with aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A preliminary diffusion tensor imaging report.

Visual field defect is one of the various clinical manifestations in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Little is known about the pathogenic mechanism of visual field defect in SAH. In the current study, we investigated the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) finding of the optic radiation in patients with SAH following rupture of a cerebral artery aneurysm. We recruited 21 patients with aneurismal SAH (12 males, 9 females, mean age, 52.67 years; range, 41-68 years) who showed no definite lesion along the visual pathway. Twenty-one age-and sex-matched normal control subjects were also rec

Optic radiations: a microsurgical anatomical study.

OBJECT: In this study, the authors used a fiber-dissection technique to describe the optic radiation. They focused on the morphological characteristics (length and breadth) of this structure, its course, and its relationships with neighboring fasciculi and the lateral ventricle. METHODS: The authors dissected 10 previously frozen, formalin-fixed human brains with the aid of an operating microscope by following the fiber dissection technique described by Klingler in 1960. Lateral, inferior, and medial approaches were made. The optic radiation, also known as the Gratiolet radiation, extended fr

Axonal loss of retinal neurons in multiple sclerosis associated with optic radiation lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential links between thinning of retinal ganglion cell axons in eyes of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) without past optic neuritis (ON) and MS-related inflammatory damage of the posterior visual pathway. METHODS: Temporal retinal nerve fiber layer (tRNFL) thickness was analyzed in eyes with no history of ON (NON) from 53 patients with relapsing-remitting MS. Fifty normal age- and sex-matched controls were examined with optical coherence tomography. Low-contrast visual acuity charts were used for functional assessment of vision. The optic tract (OT) and

Development of Force Sensor System Based on Tri-Axial Fiber Bragg Grating with Flexure Structure.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have an advantage over optical sensors in that they are lightweight, easy to terminate, and have a high flexibility and a low cost. Additionally, FBG is highly sensitive to strain and temperature, which is why it has been used in FBG force sensor systems for cardiac catheterization. When manually inserting the catheter, the physician should sense the force at the catheter tip under the limitation of power (<0.5 N). The FBG force sensor can be optimal for a catheter as it can be small, low-cost, easy to manufacture, free of electromagnetic interference, and is

Fiberscopic methods for assessment of velopharyngeal closure during various activities.

Fiberscope NPF, developed to observe velopharyngeal movements easily, enables a direct visualization of the soft palate, lateral and posterior pharyngeal walls under the physiological conditions. It is most useful for the diagnosis of velopharyngeal inadequacy. It is very important that a patient himself can observe velopharyngeal movements through the eyepiece of the fiberscope in order to do self exercise.

Electrospun Nanofibers of Poly(lactic acid)/Graphene Nanocomposites .

Multi-layer graphene (MLG) sheets were obtained by exfoliation of natural graphite flakes in chloroform. Dispersions with concentration up to 19 mg/mL were prepared. Statistical measurements of MLG sheet sizes by transmission electron microscopy showed average width and length of ~340 nm and 860 nm, respectively. MLG/chloroform dispersions were used to prepare poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/MLG composite fibrillar membranes by electrospinning. A homogeneous distribution of MLG into the fibers was observed by optical and scanning electron microscopies. The presence of MLG leads to the decrease in the

The morphology of growth cones of regenerating optic nerve axons.

The morphology of growth cones of regenerating optic nerve axons was examined by light and electron microscopy in adult frogs (Rana pipiens), using a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) fiber-filling method, during early and later phases of regeneration. Optic nerve regeneration was initiated unilaterally by crushing the optic nerve in mid-orbit. Fiber filling was accomplished by severing the affected nerve closer to the eye 24-48 hrs. prior to sacrifice and applying HRP to the central stump. Regenerating axons and their growth cones were observed in the optic nerves, chiasma, tract, pretectal neurop
