Multiple myeloma usually is characterized by the development of lytic bone lesions. Osteosclerotic myeloma is a rare entity characterized by a single or multiple osteosclerotic bone lesions and often accompanied by a demyelinating polyneuropathy. Multiple myeloma associated with widespread osteosclerotic lesions seen on radiographic studies is exceedingly rare. We describe 3 such cases and review 12 other cases described in the literature. Overall, the patients described herein had a clinical course that resembled multiple myeloma more than osteosclerotic myeloma. However, some patients had fe

OBJECTIVE: This study describes the clinical presentation and the course of Ribbing disease in six patients and illustrates imaging features on plain radiography, conventional and computed tomography, and 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate bone scans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1982 and 1990, six female patients presented with painful bony lesions that were believed to be Ribbing disease. Ten bones were affected: both tibiae in three patients, a unilateral tibia in one, both femora in one, and a unilateral femur in one. Plain radiographs and either conventional or computed tomography were avai

The purpose of this study was to provide an objective analysis of the radiographic characteristics of histiocytosis X as it affects the jaws. The original radiographs of 29 cases were reviewed independently and objectively by three observers. The results suggest that seven characteristics, either alone or in combination, are useful in the identification of histiocytosis X. These include the appearance of solitary "intraosseous" lesions, the multiplicity of "alveolar bone" lesions, the "scooped-out" effect in the alveolar process, the well-defined periphery, sclerosis in the alveolar bone lesio

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical and radiologic effects of a temporary silicone implant after diskectomy of the temporomandibular joint. Forty-three temporomandibular joints in 43 patients with painful disk displacement underwent a diskectomy. A sheet of medical-grade silicone was temporarily placed in 22 patients; 21 patients did not receive an implant. The patients were clinically and radiologically examined 5 years after surgery. On the basis of symptoms and jaw function, they were classified as having good (30 patients), acceptable (8 patients), and bad (5 p

The type, frequency and location of lumbar vertebral lesions that may interfere with quantitative computed tomographic (QCT) estimation of bone mineral content were analysed in 1166 cases. All examinations were carried out with a standard protocol on the second, third and fourth vertebral body. A total of 130 lesions were identified, the majority of which included degenerative sclerosis of L4 and compression fractures of L2. Evaluation of 28 QCTs with compression fracture in one vertebral body showed that an accurate BMC value was obtained with an interendplate distance of 13 mm or more.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed in 92 patients with back pain and a lesion confirmed via x-ray of the spine. In 31 patients in whom x-ray findings had suggested spondylitis, fine-needle aspiration biopsy showed the presence of a tumour in three patients. Of 61 patients with radiographic findings suggestive of malignancy, 26 had benign unspecific lesions, and 35 patients had neoplastic lesions. There were four false negative cytological reports and one false positive report. Additional ESR determination was of no clinical value. There were no complications. Fine-needle aspiration bi

Report of an International Symposion (Febr. 15, 1975, Munich). Human growth hormone (HGH) acts on proliferation of cartilage, the basal process of growth, by the way of somatomedine and changes in protein metabolism. Growth can be enhanced in hypopituitary dwardism and with higher dosage in other forms of failure to thrive. HGH also seems to have a beneficial effect in patients with muscular dystrophy as shown in a preliminary report but not in thrombocytopenia. First observations on patients with osteogenesis imperfecta and on patients with non healing fractures of the long bones (pseudarthro

The dental management of an 8-year-old girl with osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is described. The girl presented with various oral abnormalities. The aim of this case report was to describe in detail the dental findings in a patient with OC-CS and the precautions to be taken when planning treatment. In the present case, many dental anomalies, such as delayed eruption of the permanent teeth, obliteration of the dental pulp, short roots, fused roots and taurodontism, were detected. In patients with OS-CS, routine dental care from an early stage is recommended to manage this a

This review focuses on recent data regarding inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies and neuropathies associated with monoclonal gammopathies. We describe both acute and chronic inflammatory neuropathies, and we discuss conditions ranging from mostly cell-mediated to antibody-mediated disorders. These diseases are characterized by proximal and distal sensory motor involvement. Treatments are based on immune-modulation and/or immune-suppression. Work-up sequence and therapeutical modes are discussed in the light of recently published data, with a special interest on new treatment modalities.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vivo the evolution of osteoarthritis (OA) lesions temporally in a rabbit model of OA with clinically available imaging modalities: computed radiography (CR), helical single-slice computed tomography (CT), and 1.5 tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: Imaging was performed on knees of anesthetized rabbits [10 anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) and contralateral sham joints and six control rabbits] at baseline and at intervals up to 12 weeks post-surgery. Osteophytosis, subchondral bone sclerosis, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), femoropatellar eff

UNLABELLED: Otosclerosis causes loss of air conduction (AC) but also bone conduction (BC) may be deteriorated. It is reported that also BC may improve after surgical treatment of otosclerosis. The investigation was carried out in a group of 50 patients treated due to otosclerosis in our institution. The group included 34 women and 16 men, at the age 24 to 55 years. Pure-tone audiometry for bone and air conduction threshold was performed in all the patients. Hearing tests were carried out before and 2-4 months after the operation by the same technician Partial. Only patients with air-bone gap c

A previously unreported pattern of bone involvement in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis is described in three affected members of a Vietnamese kindred. The hands, feet, distal bones, and skull were markedly osteosclerotic on radiologic examination. The vertebrae displayed very minimal thickening of the endplates in two of the cases, and no visible involvement in the third. The vertebral bone density (assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) was markedly elevated, suggesting that the spine was not completely spared. This pattern contrasts with the predominantly axial distribution of the re

The authors present a case of congenital dysplasia affecting the long bones, skull, and other systems in a 7-year-old girl, with special attention to CT of the temporal bone, which showed abnormal ossicle fixation, a narrowed Eustachian canal, thickened sclerotic bone, and a small mastoid antrum and middle ear cavity. CT of the temporal bone can help one distinguish the etiologies of hearing loss associated with this disorder.

We have compared the value of MRI with conventional radiography and CT in 40 predominantly sclerotic skeletal lesions. We have found that sclerosis and other changes in the bone structure can be demonstrated by MRI in much the same way as with conventional radiography and CT. Using high resolution surface coils, it is possible to demonstrate small areas of new bone formation such as periosteal new bone or the calcification within the nidus of an osteoid osteoma. MRI is particularly appropriate if it is necessary to show soft tissue changes within an area of sclerosis, which may be responsible
