The cytotoxicity of molecular oxygen can be sharply increased in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the use of redox compounds capable of shunting electrons in vivo and of spontaneous reoxidation under aerobic conditions. Among these redox compounds, menadione (Vitamin K3) is particularly able to stimulate the cyanide-resistant respiration of the yeast cells. Under steady-state conditions, the efficiency of menadione is modulated by the physiological state of the yeast cells and also depends on the availability of reducing agents within the cell. A comparison was firstly done of the oxygen flux through the Bausch and Lomb Plano T lens, the Bausch & Lomb U3 lens, and the Duragel 75 lens with a sensor on the normal eye. The results showed that the Bausch and Lomb Plano T lens was the best for use with the sensor probe. The sensor was then used to obtain a comparison with the normal oxygen flux through a therapeutic lens on keratoplastic eyes and eyes with bullous keratopathy. The results showed that both conditions had a lower oxygen consumption than normal and that eyes with bullous keratopathy predictably had the lowest value.

The cardiovascular effects of two intravenous rates of butorphanol infusion (0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg/min) were measured in 32 dogs breathing oxygen and nitrous oxide in oxygen. Sixteen dogs were premedicated with atropine and the other 16 were unpremedicated. Oxygen consumption (MO2), effective alveolar ventilation (Veff), arterial and alveolar PO2 (PaO2, PAO2) and the alveolar-arterial PO2 difference [(A--a)PO2] were determined in the lizards Varanus exanthematicus and Iguana iguana at rest and during treadmill exercise at 35 degrees C. Human neutophils stimulated with phorbol myristate acetate were able to rapidly destroy autologous red blood cell targets. Neutrophil-mediated cytotoxicity was related to phorbol myristate acetate concentration and neutrophil number. A patient experienced allergic contact dermatitis on two occasions two months apart as a result of wearing the same brand of polyvinyl chloride oxygen cannula. In one instance the cannula was removed and not replaced, as continuing oxygen was unnecessary; on the other occasion the original cannula was replaced by a cannula of another brand. In both cases the dermatitis disappeared after removal of the original cannula. Between 1976 and 1979, 22 patients had hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. Seventeen patients benefited and five did not--one of two carbon monoxide poisoning patients, both gas gangrene patients, and four of five osteomyelitis victims were greatly helped while 10 of 13 soft tissue wounds were healed with the hyperbaric oxygen treatment. This local series exemplifies the range and limitations of the medical application of hyperbaric oxygen.
