Host-targeted oral avian vaccine virus demonstrates broad antiviral activity and safety in patients.

The absence of an immediately deployable, broad-spectrum antiviral remains a critical vulnerability in global pandemic preparedness. Host-directed agents that activate innate immunity offer a pathogen-agnostic strategy, yet no such therapy is currently stockpiled or authorized for emergency use. Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV)-a non-replicating avian dsRNA vaccine virus with a 60-year safety record in poultry-induces robust interferon responses in mammals and has been administered orally in marmosets and more than 50 human patients with hepatitis A, B, C, SARS-CoV-2, and herpes zoster i…

Competing societal objectives in epidemic mitigation: a modeling study of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

School closures and suspension of non-essential economic activities are highly effective respiratory-pandemic mitigation strategies because they effectively interrupt disease transmission. However, they come with high societal costs. Most of these costs are borne by workers who lose their income, especially those who are not supported by welfare benefits, and students whose future income depends on their education. In countries where many households live close to the poverty line, closures should be designed to minimize impacts on the most vulnerable. The objective of this study is to learn an

Avian influenza: risk to human health and the need for an effective government policy.

Since 1997, outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have increased in frequency and severity. In December 2003, an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza occurred in poultry in eight Asian countries. Vietnam and Thailand also reported human infection due to H5H1 avian influenza virus. Outbreaks of avian influenza (flu) among poultry continue and Thailand has reported human mortality in a second wave of human avian influenza in the year 2004. The main presenting features of avian influenza H5N1 in humans are fever, pneumonitis, lymphopenia and diarrhoea. Notably coryza, sore throat and conjunc

Cost effectiveness of preemptive school closures to mitigate pandemic influenza outbreaks of differing severity in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) may be considered as part of national pandemic preparedness as a first line defense against influenza pandemics. Preemptive school closures (PSCs) are an NPI reserved for severe pandemics and are highly effective in slowing influenza spread but have unintended consequences. METHODS: We used results of simulated PSC impacts for a 1957-like pandemic (i.e., an influenza pandemic with a high case fatality rate) to estimate population health impacts and quantify PSC costs at the national level using three geographical scales, four closure duration…

Excess mortality during COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh - evidence from a rural survey.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had a profound impact worldwide. In Bangladesh, the official number of deaths for COVID-19 was around 29 000. However, many countries including Bangladesh experienced substantial underreporting of COVID-19 deaths due to lack of complete national civil registration system. This study aims to estimate excess mortality in 2020, identify risk factors, and determine leading causes of death in Bangladesh. METHODS: In February 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional household survey in Sitakunda, a subdistrict of Chattogram, identifying deaths from Ja

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Routine Pediatric Vaccination Rates in 7 Upper Midwestern States.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic stressed healthcare systems by increasing patient loads and creating shortages of both staffing and medical supplies. As a result, the process of administering routine pediatric vaccinations was affected. Multiple studies have reported ongoing decreases in vaccination opportunities. Completed vaccinations on the vaccination schedule for the pediatric population is a highly effective public health intervention and therefore should be maintained at high rates. Decreases in routine pediatric vaccinations could lead to the spread of multiple infectious diseases.

Healthcare workers' experiences with COVID-19-related prevention and control measures in Tanzania.

The ability of a health system to withstand shocks such as a pandemic depends largely on the availability and preparedness of health-care workers (HCWs), who are at the frontline of disease management and prevention. Despite the heavy burden placed on HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known regarding their experiences in low-income countries. We conducted a web-based survey with HCWs in randomly selected districts of Tanzania to explore their experiences with COVID-19-related prevention and control measures. The survey assessed implementation of COVID-19 control guidelines in health
