Innervation of the heart: Anatomical study with application to better understanding pathologies of the cardiac autonomics.

Current advances in management of the cardiac neuroaxis in different cardiovascular diseases require a deeper knowledge of cardiac neuroanatomy. The aim of the study was to increase knowledge of the human fetal extrinsic cardiac nervous system. We achieved this by systematizing the origin and formation of the cardiac nerves, branches, and ganglia and their sympathetic/parasympathetic connections. Thirty human fetuses (60 sides) were subjected to detailed sub-macroscopic dissection of the cervical and thoracic regions. Cardiac accessory ganglia lying on a cardiac nerve or in conjunction with tw

Does obstructive sleep apnoea modulate cardiac autonomic function in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation?

PURPOSE: The autonomic nervous system may mediate acute apnoea-induced atrial fibrillation (AF). We compared cardiac autonomic function in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients with and without obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). METHODS: Case control study of 101 patients with PAF recruited at two tertiary centres. All patients underwent in-laboratory polysomnography. ECG signal demonstrating "steady state" sinus rhythm (i.e. with arrhythmic beats and respiratory events excluded) was included in the analysis. Cardiac autonomic function was assessed via measures of heart rate variability

The regulation of hippocampal dynorphin by neural/neuroendocrine pathways: models for effects of aging on an opioid peptide system.

Previous research has demonstrated increased messenger RNA expression and peptide content in an opioid system localized to hippocampal dentate granule cells in aged rats. This altered regulation of dynorphin was correlated with the emergence of an age-related impairment in spatial learning. Considerable evidence exists for additional effects of aging on systems that provide input to the dynorphin-containing dentate granule cells. Such changes have been well documented for loss of perforant path innervation from entorhinal cortex, deterioration in septohippocampal cholinergic neurons, and high

Acute effects of digitalis and enalapril on the neurohormonal profile of chagasic patients with severe congestive heart failure.

Chagasic patients with congestive heart failure are usually treated with digitalis and converting enzyme inhibitors. According to the neurogenic and dysautonomic theories, chagasic patients would not benefit from these drugs. To clarify this controversial issue, we have studied patients with congestive heart failure and suspected Chagas' heart disease. All patients received intravenous methyl-digoxin for 24 h and oral enalapril for 96 h. Blood samples for plasma norepinephrine, aldosterone and renin were taken at baseline, after acute digitalization and following enalapril. Based on the serolo

The male genitourinary sphincter mechanism in the dog.

In an effort to locate and characerize a genital sphincter in the male posterior urethra, the intraluminal changes in urethral pressure under both sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation were studied. It appears that the urethra has a specific genital sphincteric length corresponding to the supramontanal portion. The urethral length is seemingly under sympathetic control, so that backflow of semen does not occur during ejaculation. The urinary sphincter apparently involves the entire posterior urethra and is primarily under parasympathetic influence.

Association between reduced heart rate variability components and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias in patients with a systemic right ventricle.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a systemic right ventricle are prone to develop heart failure. Abnormal heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic dysfunction, is associated with morbidity and mortality in patients with left ventricular failure. The association between HRV and supraventricular arrhythmias (SVTs), which are associated with adverse events in this population, was assessed. METHODS: 24-Hour Holter recordings of patients with a systemic right ventricle and healthy controls were analysed in a retrospective cohort study. HRV was calculated and compared between groups. Correlatio

Chronic fluoxetine treatment enhances sympathetic activities associated with abnormality of baroreflex function in conscious normal rats.

Data regarding the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which are a common type of antidepressants, on cardiovascular autonomic function are inconsistent. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of chronic fluoxetine, an SSRI, on blood pressure, cardiac autonomic nervous activities and baroreflex control of heart rate. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with fluoxetine (10mg/kg day, p.o.) or saline for 14 weeks. Baroreflex function was determined by the sigmoid logistic method based on the heart rate responses to changes in blood pressure elicited by

Heart rate variability during sleep at high altitude: effect of periodic breathing.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep in normal subjects at high altitude shows a decrease in parasympathetic tone associated with an increase in the sympathetic one, which tends to be reversed with acclimatization. However, periodic breathing (PB) during sleep may influence this effect detected by HRV spectral analysis. PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to investigate HRV during sleep periodic breathing (PB) at high altitude in normal subjects at two different times of acclimatization, i.e., two different levels of hypoxemia. METHODS: Recordings of six healthy climbers (aged

The changing face of sympathetic overactivity in hypertension.

There is a lot of evidence showing that sympathetic activity is increased in a large proportion of patients with hypertension. However, the clinical impact of this state is frequently underestimated. Several factors seem to be misunderstood, such as whether sympathetic overactivity is reproducibly present, whether it lasts throughout 24 h, and what is the significance of its association with tachycardia. In this review, we present data to indicate that several haemodynamic changes in hypertension such as elevated cardiac output and heart rate and alteration in vascular resistance are neurogeni

Effect of physiologic and pharmacologic adrenergic stimulation on heart rate variability.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of physiologic and pharmacologic sympathetic stimulation on time and frequency domain indexes of heart rate variability. BACKGROUND: Measurements of heart rate variability have been used as indexes of sympathetic tone. To date, the effects of circulating catecholamines on heart rate variability have not been evaluated. METHODS: Fourteen normal subjects (eight men, six women, mean [+/- SD] age 28.5 +/- 4.8 years) were evaluated. Five-minute electrocardiographic recordings were obtained in triplicate after physiologic an

Parasympathetic depression of vas deferens contraction in the guinea-pig involves adenosine receptors.

1. In the guinea-pig pelvic plexus-vas deferens preparation, stimulation of the parasympathetic pelvic nerves contracted the vas deferens then depressed the contractile responses to stimulation of the sympathetic hypogastric nerves. 2. The contraction caused by stimulation of the pelvic nerves was initially phasic then tonic. The contractions were almost abolished by application of hexamethonium to the plexus. The phasic contraction was abolished by alpha,beta-methylene adenosine triphosphate applied to the vas deferens. 3. Conditioning stimulation of the pelvic nerves preferentially depressed

Neural control of lower airway vasculature. Involvement of classical transmitters and neuropeptides.

1. SP- and CGRP-IR fibres of presumably sensory origin were abundantly located around the vasculature and glands in the laryngotracheal and bronchial mucosae of the pig. A sparse presence of CGRP- and SP-IR nerves in the tracheobronchial smooth muscle layer as well as an atropine-sensitive bronchoconstrictor response to electrical field stimulation suggested that neuropeptides locally released from sensory nerves may be related to vascular or exocrine gland function rather than to bronchial smooth muscle control. In the tracheal mucosa, many VIP-positive perivascular nerve fibres, likely to be

Sustained upregulation of glial fibrillary acidic protein in Müller cells in pigeon retina following disruption of the parasympathetic control of choroidal blood flow.

Choroidal blood flow in pigeon eyes is light driven and controlled by a parasympathetic input from ciliary ganglion (CG) neurons that receive input from the medial subdivision of the ipsilateral nucleus of Edinger-Westphal (EWM). EWM lesions diminish basal ChBF and irreversibly prevent ipsilateral light-evoked increases in ChBF, presumably rendering the retina mildly ischemic. To characterize the location, severity, and time course of the retinal abnormality caused by an EWM lesion, we quantitatively analyzed the cellular and regional extent of Müller cell glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP

Imaging the Autonomic Nervous System in Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often display gastrointestinal and genitourinary autonomic symptoms years or even decades prior to diagnosis. These symptoms are thought to be caused in part by pathological α-synuclein inclusions in the peripheral autonomic and enteric nervous systems. It has been proposed that the initial α-synuclein aggregation may in some PD patients originate in peripheral nerve terminals and then spread centripetally to the spinal cord and brainstem. In vivo imaging methods can directly quantify the degeneration of the autonomic nervous system as

Autonomic control of blood pressure in women: The roles of hypertension and aging.

Hypertension remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide, with implications in women's health across the lifespan. Of note, autonomic nervous system imbalances have been linked to the development of hypertension and are present with natural aging and various conditions unique to women (e.g., menopause, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome). As such, this article reviews the critical changes in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems that occur in women and may contribute to the development of hypertension. Special focus is p…

[Orthostatic hypotension in patients with posttraumatic cervical myelopathy].

AIM: To define the mechanism of formation of orthostatic hypotension in patients with traumatic tetraplegia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 64 patients with chronic (more 6 month) and subacute (less 6 month) tetraplegia; the period of observation was about 30 days after admission to the rehabilitation center. Changes in the state of the autonomic nervous systems (heart rate variability at rest and head-up tilt test, sinus arrhythmia) were studied. RESULTS: In the first 6 months, all patients, and after 6-12 months, one third of the patients experienced orthostatic hypotension, whic

Autism spectrum disorders in adults and the autonomic nervous system: Heart rate variability markers in the diagnostic procedure.

The diagnostic assessment of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in adults is a challenging and time-consuming procedure. In order to address the lack of specialised health-care professionals and improve the waiting time, we aimed to identify specific electrocardiogram (ECG) derived Heart Rate Variability (HRV) parameters that could be used for diagnostic purposes. 152 patients were diagnosed based on a standardised clinical procedure and assigned to one of three groups: ASD (n = 56), any other psychiatric disorder (OD) (n = 72), and patients with no diagnosis (ND) (n = 24). Groups were compared u
