The aflatoxin-detoxifizyme (ADTZ) gene derived from Armillariella tabescens was cloned into parotid gland-specific expression vector (pPSPBGPneo) to construct the parotid gland-specific vector expressing ADTZ (pPSPBGPneo-ADTZ). Transgenic mice were generated by microinjection and identified by using PCR and Southern blotting analysis. PCR and Southern blotting analysis showed that total six transgenic mice carried the ADTZ gene were generated. RT-PCR analysis indicated that the expression of ADTZ mRNA could be detected only in parotid glands of the transgenic mice. The ADTZ activity in the sal

OBJECTIVE: We report an interesting case involving a child with a branchial cleft anomaly with two fistulous tracts, one of which was associated with an unusual otoscopic finding.
CASE REPORT: A seven-year-old girl presented with an apparent type II first branchial cleft cyst after an acute infection. Parotidectomy and excision of the tract were performed, with subsequent development of pre-auricular swelling three months later. Further surgery was performed to remove a second duplication anomaly of the external auditory canal. Otomicroscopy showed a fibrous band arising from the wall of the

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

The twelft case of synovial sarcoma of the neck originated in the base of the tongue at the foramen caecum is reported. The patient, a 21 year old man developed a 7 cm. tumor after a 5 month period. A radical neck disection revealed metastases to lymph nodes, to spinal chain and residual tumor infiltrating the parotid gland. The subsequent X-ray studies showed metastases to lung. The patient is well 1 year after surgery. The pathogenesis of synovial sarcomas in regions so distant from normal synovial elements as the neck and other sites is not clear. In the present case and in those reported p

PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of induction chemotherapy and chemo-IMRT in head and neck squamous cell cancers at risk of bilateral nodal spread (midline tumours) and to evaluate whether bilateral superficial lobe parotid-sparing IMRT can reduce the incidence of ⩾G2 subjective xerostomia.
METHODS: Patients with midline tumours were enrolled to a phase II trial to receive induction platinum/5-fluorouracil and concomitant platinum with combined superficial lobe parotid-sparing IMRT. The primary site and involved nodal levels received 65 Gy in 30 fractions (f) and at risk nodal levels, 54

The parotid, submandibular, and sublingual salivary glands are the major salivary glands in the mouth. Cancers that arise in these glands are relatively uncommon, usually benign, and rarely metastasize. We present a unique case of a 17-year-old male diagnosed with high-grade secretory carcinoma of the salivary gland that was generally asymptomatic except for a persistent rash. The patient reported no significant past medical, family, or social history. A multidisciplinary team efficiently diagnosed and treated the cancer with histopathology, MRI, tumor excision, lymphadenectomy, and adjuvant t

Acute unilateral parotid gland swelling after general anesthesia, anesthesia mumps is rare and when occurred, it is associated with the patient's position and with long-lasting surgery. The exact mechanism or etiology has not been fully established but stasis of gland secretion, blockage of Stensen's duct by direct compression, or retrograde flow of air by increased the oral cavity pressure are suspicious reasons. We experienced a case of soft tissue swelling in the left preauricular and submandibular regions in a 40-year-old female patient after short-lasting, hysteroscopic myomectomy perform

The authors report a case of left otorrhagia in a 1-year-old male infant in the presence of a mass involving the parotideal and upper cervical regions, which had appeared after an infection of the upper airways. Non-invasive techniques, such as echography and CT scan, provided useful but contradicting information. Surgery allowed us to define the diagnosis of mycotic aneurysm of the external carotid artery. The authors, after pointing out the extreme rarity of such a pathology, discuss the ethiopathogenetic theories, the clinical features, the diagnosis and the surgical and medical treatment o

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy plays an important role in the management of most malignant and many benign primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Radiotherapy affects both tumor cells and uninvolved normal cells; so, it is important to estimate absorbed dose to organs at risk in this kind of treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the absorbed dose to chiasma, lens, optic nerve, retina, parotid, thyroid and submandibular gland in frontal lobe brain tumors radiotherapy based on treatment planning system (TPS) calculation and direct measurement on the phantom.
METHODS: A head and neck

Frey syndrome (FS), or gustatory sweating, is typically characterized by sweating and flushing in the parotid region during eating. While FS most commonly develops after parotidectomy, it has also been reported following traumatic causes such as submandibular gland surgery, radical neck dissection, mandibular condyle fracture, or forceps delivery. The authors present the case of a 58-year-old male who developed FS and a right-sided facial contour deformity 11 months following severe blunt maxillofacial trauma. On the basis of the diagnosis, a de-epithelialized superficial circumflex iliac arte…

BACKGROUND: In the last years human proteomic has represented a promising tool to promote the communication between basic and clinical science.
METHODS: To explore the correspondence between salivary proteomic profile and clinical response, herein, we used a proteomic approach to analyse the whole saliva of a patient with primary Sjögren's Syndrome (pSS) and non-Hodgkin's-MALT type parotid lymphoma before, during and after a standard treatment with cyclophosphamide (CTX) and rituximab (RTX). To identify any discriminatory therapeutic salivary biomarker patient's whole saliva was collected at

Using D2-40 immunohistochemistry, we assessed the distribution of peripheral lymphatic vessels (LVs) in the head-and-neck region of four midterm fetuses without nuchal edema, two of 10 weeks and two of 15 weeks' gestation. We observed abundant LVs in the subcutaneous layer, especially in and along the facial muscles. In the occipital region, only a few LVs were identified perforating the back muscles. The parotid and thyroid glands were surrounded by LVs, but the sublingual and submandibular glands were not. The numbers of submucosal LVs increased from 10 to 15 weeks' gestation in all of the n

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis, considering entry of infection, most frequent concerns the lungs. Rarely we observed extrapulmonary cases of tuberculosis within the bones, joints, urogenital organs and lymph nodes as well as within the head and neck region--larynx, middle ear, pharynx, tonsils, tongue, parotid glands and central nervous system. Sinonasal tuberculosis, either primary or secondary to pulmonary infection, is very rare, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of sinonasal granulomas. The diagnosis of the head and neck tuberculosis is based on the medical patientis exami

INTRODUCTION: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) is the anatomical area lateral to the upper pharynx and clinically important due to PPS tumors. They account for less than 1% of head and neck neoplasms. Both benign and malignant neoplasms may arise there and typical for this localization is diversity of histological origin. Complete surgical excision is still the basis of treatment.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Evaluation of the results of surgical treatment of PPS tumors in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical University over the period 2015-2017.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of m

Our experience with anomalies of the first branchial cleft is reviewed. This includes 38 cases, the largest series collected to date. A new classification is proposed based on the anatomic findings--whether cyst, sinus, or fistula is present. The embryology and pathology of first cleft anomalies are discussed and an approach to the diagnosis and management of these lesions is given. In addition, a patient with a branchial cleft defect involving the middle ear space is reported.

BACKGROUND: Nodular fasciitis is a rare, benign, and rapidly growing soft tissue lesion that predominantly affects the fascia and is typically observed in the extremities. However, its occurrence in the head and neck region is uncommon, making it a challenging entity to diagnose and treat. In the head and neck, the lesion can involve various structures including the soft tissue, muscles, and even the parotid gland. Clinically, patients may present with swelling, pain, or a rapidly enlarging mass often leading to misdiagnosis with more malignant conditions such as sarcomas or fibromatosis.
