Folic Acid Supplementation and the Association between Maternal Airborne Particulate Matter Exposure and Preterm Delivery: A National Birth Cohort Study in China.

BACKGROUND: Potential modification of the association between maternal particulate matter (PM) exposure and preterm delivery (PTD) by folic acid (FA) supplementation has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether FA supplementation could reduce the risk of PTD associated with maternal exposure to PM in ambient air during pregnancy. METHOD: In a cohort study covering 30 of the 31 provinces of mainland China in 2014, 1,229,556 primiparas of Han ethnicity were followed until labor. We collected information on their FA supplementation and pregnancy outcomes and estimated each participant's…

The burden of acute conjunctivitis attributable to ambient particulate matter pollution in Singapore and its exacerbation during South-East Asian haze episodes.

INTRODUCTION: Urban air quality in South-East Asia is influenced by local and transboundary sources of air pollutants. Research studies have … idity variability. Approximately 3% of all acute conjunctivitis reports were attributable to PM2.5. Particulate matter attributed acute conjunctivitis was disproportionately higher during transboundary haze episodes. CONCLUSION: Our study strengthens the evidence linking particulate matter exposure to an increased risk of conjunctival disease, with a disproportiona …

Semiautomatic sequential extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and elemental bio-accessible fraction by accelerated solvent extraction on a single particulate matter sample.

We describe the optimization and validation of a sequential extractive method for the determination of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, V and Zn) that are chemically fractionated into bio-accessible and mineralized residual fractions on a single particulate matter filter. The extraction is performed by automatic accelerated solvent extraction (ASE); samples are sequentially treated with dichloromethane/acetone (4:1) for PAHs extraction and acetate buffer (0.01M; pH 4.5) for elements extraction (bio-accessible fraction). The remai…

Synergistic effects of particulate matter (PM10) and SO2 on human non-small cell lung cancer A549 via ROS-mediated NF-κB activation.

Since a real atmospheric scenario usually represents a system involving multiple pollutants, air pollution studies typically focused on describing adverse effects associated with exposure to individual pollutants cannot reflect actual health risk. Particulate matter (PM10) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are two major pollutants derived from coal combustion processes and co-existing in coal-smoke air pollution, but their potentially synergistic toxicity remains elusive thus far. In this study, we investigated the cytotoxic responses of PM10 and SO2, singly and in binary mixtures, using human non-smal…

Ambient fine particulate matter and ozone exposures induce inflammation in epicardial and perirenal adipose tissues in rats fed a high fructose diet.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and oxidative stress play critical roles in the pathogenesis of inhaled air pollutant-mediated metabolic disease. Inflammation in the adipose tissues niches are widely believed to exert important effects on organ dysfunction. Recent data from both human and animal models suggest a role for inflammation and oxidative stress in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) as a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that inhalational exposure to concentrated ambient fine particulates (CAPs) and ozone (O3) exaggerates inflammation and oxidative stres

Particulate matter in new technology diesel exhaust (NTDE) is quantitatively and qualitatively very different from that found in traditional diesel exhaust (TDE).

Diesel exhaust (DE) characteristic of pre-1988 engines is classified as a "probable" human carcinogen (Group 2A) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified DE as "likely to be carcinogenic to humans." These classifications were based on the large body of health effect studies conducted on DE over the past 30 or so years. However, increasingly stringent U.S. emissions standards (1988-2010) for particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in diesel exhaust have helped stimulate major technological advances in diesel…

Determination of 43 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air particulate matter by use of direct elution and isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

We are reporting a method for measuring 43 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their methylated derivatives (Me-PAHs) in air particulate matter (PM) samples using isotope dilution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS). In this method, PM samples were spiked with internal standards, loaded into solid phase extraction cartridges, and eluted by dichloromethane. The extracts were concentrated, spiked with a recovery standard, and analyzed by GC/HRMS at 10,000 resolution. Sixteen (13)C-labeled PAHs and two deuterated Me-PAHs were used as internal standards to account…

Transport of atmospheric fine particulate matter: part 1--findings from recent field programs on the extent of regional transport within North America.

Air quality field data, collected as part of the fine particulate matter Supersites program and other field measurements programs, have been used to assess the role of aerosol transport, over length scales of approximately 100-1000 km, on fine particulate matter concentrations. Assessment of data from New York, NY; Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh, PA; Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; St. Louis, MO; and Fresno, CA, indicates that in virtually all of the regions, transport of aerosol over distances of 100-1000 km has a significant impact on urban particulate matter concentrations and a dominant role in deter…

Characterization of traffic-related particulate matter in an urban tunnel: Source apportionment of exhaust and non-exhaust particle number-size distribution emissions.

Emissions from urban traffic are the primary sources of particulate matter in metropolitan areas, contributing to environmental and human health issues. To identify sources and evaluate emission factors for PM2.5 and PM10 from vehicles, tunnel measurements were conducted in two seasons at the Niayesh Tunnel in Tehran. Sampling was performed using high-volume air samplers and PMS5003 low-cost sensors at tunnel entrance and exit. Results show that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations were higher in the cold months. The chemical profile indicated that traffic-related metals were present at high concentr…

Temporal trends in anemia and particulate matter air pollution by sex and country-level income: Longitudinal evidence from 185 countries, 1990-2021.

Anemia remains a major global health concern with multifactorial causes and consequences across income levels. Evidence linking environmental factors, such as particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution, to anemia is limited. This study examined longitudinal associations between PM2.5 air pollution and anemia prevalence across 185 countries from 1990 to 2021, focusing on sex and income-level differences. Secondary data on PM2.5 exposure, anemia prevalence, socioeconomic indices (Socio-demographic Index [SDI], Healthcare Access and Quality [HAQ], Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs]), and health-r…

[Determination of seven tire antioxidants and their quinone oxidation products in fine particulate matter by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry].

p-Phenylenediamine compounds (PPDs) are widely used as anti-aging agents and antioxidants in rubber industry. However, environmental concerns have arisen regarding the toxicity of their quinone derivatives (PPD-Qs). Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) serves as a crucial vector enabling PPDs and PPD-Qs to enter the human body via respiratory exposure pathway. Therefore, accurate monitoring of PPDs and PPD-Qs in PM2.5 is essential. In this research, a high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) approach was established to quantify seven PPDs and seven PPD-Qs in PM2.…

Submicron Particulate Matter (PM1)-Induced Pulmonary Injury and Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate Intervention: Modulation of Disorders in Amino Acid, Glycerophospholipid, and Energy Metabolism.

Emerging evidence indicates that submicron particulate matter (PM1) poses greater respiratory health risks than coarser particles (e.g., PM2.5). Yet its specific toxicological mechanisms and effective mitigation strategies remain insufficiently understood. This study demonstrated that PM1 exposure induced significant dose-dependent pulmonary oxidative stress and inflammatory response in vivo and in vitro. Metabolomic analysis revealed that PM1 triggered more complex metabolic alterations than those induced by PM2.5, including disorders in amino acid metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, …

Grid-based screening of fine particulate matter and water-optical conditions in Southern Benin: the Cotonou, Lake Nokoué, and Porto-Novo Corridor.

Air and surface-water conditions are commonly monitored separately in West African coastal cities, leaving limited evidence on where environmental pressures overlap. This study developed a 1-km spatial screening framework for the Cotonou, Lake Nokoué, and Porto-Novo corridor in southern Benin. Annual fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations were analyzed for 2001-2022, and a temporally aligned air-water assessment was conducted for 2018-2022. Sentinel-2 water-optical indicators were evaluated against field turbidity and chlorophyll-a measurements from 19 monitoring stations. Unlike a com…

Long-term exposure to dust in fine particulate matter and post-stroke functional impairment-Findings from the China National Stroke Screening Surveys.

The dust component of particulate matter (PM) warrants more attention in the era of climate change and increased frequency of dust event, yet rarely are studies focused exclusively on the long-term health effects of dust PM2.5. This study aims to assess the relative toxicity of dust and non-dust PM2.5 on the long-term functional impairment after stroke. We utilized data from a multicenter, national survey in China from 2013 to 2019 and selected participants with repeated assessments of the functional impairment outcomes, the modified Rankin scale (mRS) score, to form a longitudinal dataset. Th…

Association between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter from sand dust storms and small airway dysfunction: A national cross-sectional study.

Despite growing concern on the health effects of dust-sourced fine particulate matter (dust PM2.5), especially in the context of climate change, but the respiratory health effect has not been well characterized. Investigating the impact of dust PM2.5 on small airway dysfunction (SAD) is important for early prevention, since SAD represents an early stage of airway obstruction. This study evaluated the dose-response associations and effect modifications of long-term dust PM2.5 exposure with risks of SAD on a national scale. SAD was identified based on lung function data from the China Pulmonary …

Synergistic risks of ambient air particulate matter and ozone exposure on low birth weight: An 11-year longitudinal Chinese maternity cohort study.

Observational epidemiological studies have demonstrated that maternal exposure to air pollution increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, interactions among multiple environmental exposures remain underexplored. In this study, we performed an epidemiological analysis on 147,979 pregnant women recruited from nine provinces in southeastern China between 2013 and 2023, focusing on the risk of low birth weight (LBW). We found that the critical exposure windows for PM2.5 and ozone (O3) extend from six months prior to conception through the end of second trimester, with hazard ratio
