Tracking pedestrians using local spatio-temporal motion patterns in extremely crowded scenes.

Tracking pedestrians is a vital component of many computer vision applications, including surveillance, scene understanding, and behavior analysis. Videos of crowded scenes present significant challenges to tracking due to the large number of pedestrians and the frequent partial occlusions that they produce. The movement of each pedestrian, however, contributes to the overall crowd motion (i.e., the collective motions of the scene's constituents over the entire video) that exhibits an underlying spatially and temporally varying structured pattern. In this paper, we present a novel Bayesian fra

Eye movement analysis for activity recognition using electrooculography.

In this work, we investigate eye movement analysis as a new sensing modality for activity recognition. Eye movement data were recorded using an electrooculography (EOG) system. We first describe and evaluate algorithms for detecting three eye movement characteristics from EOG signals-saccades, fixations, and blinks-and propose a method for assessing repetitive patterns of eye movements. We then devise 90 different features based on these characteristics and select a subset of them using minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) feature selection. We validate the method using an eight partici

Linear regression for face recognition.

In this paper, we present a novel approach of face identification by formulating the pattern recognition problem in terms of linear regression. Using a fundamental concept that patterns from a single-object class lie on a linear subspace, we develop a linear model representing a probe image as a linear combination of class-specific galleries. The inverse problem is solved using the least-squares method and the decision is ruled in favor of the class with the minimum reconstruction error. The proposed Linear Regression Classification (LRC) algorithm falls in the category of nearest subspace cla

Dependent multiple cue integration for robust tracking.

We propose a new technique for fusing multiple cues to robustly segment an object from its background in video sequences that suffer from abrupt changes of both illumination and position of the target. Robustness is achieved by the integration of appearance and geometric object features and by their estimation using Bayesian filters, such as Kalman or particle filters. In particular, each filter estimates the state of a specific object feature, conditionally dependent on another feature estimated by a distinct filter. This dependence provides improved target representations, permitting to segm

Fingerprint warping using ridge curve correspondences.

The performance of a fingerprint matching system is affected by the nonlinear deformation introduced in the fingerprint impression during image acquisition. This nonlinear deformation causes fingerprint features such as minutiae points and ridge curves to be distorted in a complex manner. A technique is presented to estimate the nonlinear distortion in fingerprint pairs based on ridge curve correspondences. The nonlinear distortion, represented using the thin-plate spline (TPS) function, aids in the estimation of an "average" deformation model for a specific finger when several impressions of

Real-time gesture recognition by learning and selective control of visual interest points.

For the real-time recognition of unspecified gestures by an arbitrary person, a comprehensive framework is presented that addresses two important problems in gesture recognition systems: selective attention and processing frame rate. To address the first problem, we propose the Quadruple Visual Interest Point Strategy. No assumptions are made with regard to scale or rotation of visual features, which are computed from dynamically changing regions of interest in a given image sequence. In this paper, each of the visual features is referred to as a visual interest point, to which a probability d

A simple technique for improving camera displacement estimation in eye-in-hand visual servoing.

A simple technique for estimating the camera displacement from point correspondences in eye-in-hand visual servoing is presented. The idea for providing more accurate results than existing methods consists of taking into account that the point correspondences used during the camera motion correspond to stationary spatial points, hence exploiting additional information. This is done by first estimating the object Euclidean structure and then estimating the camera displacement from this estimate.

Adaptive relaxation labeling.

Current implementation of probabilistic relaxation labeling (PRL) is based on stationary compatibility coefficients (SCC's). Such labeling frequently diverges from an achieved minimum labeling error. In this correspondence it is shown that by having nonstationary compatibility coefficients (NSCC's) the PRL stabilizes about the minimum error which is obtained during the early iterations. Also, a noniterative labeling algorithm which uses NSCC and has a performance similar to that of the modified PRL is suggested.

Automatic analysis of moving images.

Cine film and videotape are used to record a variety of natural processes in biology, medicine, meteorology, etc. This paper describes a system which detects and tracks moving objects from these records to obtain meaningful measures of their movements, such as linear and angular velocities. Features of the system are as follows. 1) In order to detect moving objects that are usually blurred, temporal differences of gray values (differences between consecutive frames) are used to separate moving objects from stationary objects, in addition to spatial differences of gray values. 2) The results of

On the analysis of accumulative difference pictures from image sequences of real world scenes.

The count of events where sample areas from the second and subsequent frames of a TV-image sequence are incompatible with the corresponding sample area of the first frame are accumulated in a first-order difference picture (FODP). Analysis of this FODP provides a separate estimate for images of moving objects and of stationary scene components. We start from the hypothesis that the first frame represents the stationary scene component. Once it has been recognized that a subarea of this initial estimate corresponds to the image of a moving object, the grey values in this subarea are replaced by

Artificial intelligence as a transforming factor in motility disorders-automatic detection of motility patterns in high-resolution anorectal manometry.

High-resolution anorectal manometry (HR-ARM) is the gold standard for anorectal functional disorders' evaluation, despite being limited by its accessibility and complex data analysis. The London Protocol and Classification were developed to standardize anorectal motility patterns classification. This proof-of-concept study aims to develop and validate an artificial intelligence model for identification and differentiation of disorders of anal tone and contractility in HR-ARM. A dataset of 701 HR-ARM exams from a tertiary center, classified according to London Classification, was used to develo

A BASIC algorithm for calculating the postmortem interval from arthropod successional data.

A computer algorithm, implemented in the BASIC language, is presented for calculating the postmortem interval (PMI) from arthropod successional data. Entomology-assisted determination of the PMI promises to be a reliable technique in cases of homicide, suicide, accidental death, and unattended death due to natural causes. The program requires, as input, the identity of arthropod taxa recovered from human remains in a death scene investigation and machine-readable data on carrion-associated arthropod taxa and their known successional patterns of activity for the same geographical area. The prog

Machine-Learning Analysis of Serum Proteomics in Neuropathic Pain after Nerve Injury in Breast Cancer Surgery Points at Chemokine Signaling via SIRT2 Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postsurgical neuropathic pain (PPSNP) can occur after intraoperative damage to somatosensory nerves, with a prevalence of 29-57% in breast cancer surgery. Proteomics is an active research field in neuropathic pain and the first results support its utility for establishing diagnoses or finding therapy strategies. METHODS: 57 women (30 non-PPSNP/27 PPSNP) who had experienced a surgeon-verified intercostobrachial nerve injury during breast cancer surgery, were examined for patterns in 74 serum proteomic markers that allowed discrimination between subgroups with or without

Self-MAR: Self-Supervised Multi-Stage Autoregressive Model for Water-Related Optical Image Enhancement.

We propose Self-MAR, a self-supervised paradigm for water-related optical image enhancement that enables input-only restoration via the proposed VAR-inspired Multi-stage AutoRegressive model, in which each restoration stage is conditioned on the preceding restored state. The intricate interactions between light and the water medium introduce residual degradations that are difficult to model explicitly, thereby limiting the effectiveness of existing methods that rely heavily on synthetic data or sparse annotations. Furthermore, acquiring paired ground-truth data in real underwater environments

QEGF: A Quantum-Inspired Geometric and Energy-Based Fusion Framework for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis.

Conventional Euclidean fusion paradigms in multimodal sentiment analysis (MSA) fail to capture non-Euclidean correlations and probabilistic uncertainty across modalities, often leading to misaligned affective representations and limited robustness under real-world variability. To overcome these challenges, we introduce the novel Quantum-Inspired Geometric and Energy-Based Fusion (QEGF) framework that unifies geometric sentiment representation with probabilistic uncertainty modeling for more reliable affective perception. First, the Quantum-Inspired Geometric Fusion (QGF) operator represents ea

Rectifying GAN Gradient Supervision Via Score Functions.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) and diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have emerged as the most prominent paradigms in generative modeling, and recent works suggest that combining GANs and DPMs could further enhance generative models. While the adversarial training of GANs has been applied to knowledge distillation of DPMs in the literature, the potential of leveraging DPMs to improve GAN training remains under-explored. In this work, we demonstrate the theoretical connections between GANs and DPMs, bridging the two most important paradigms of generative models for the first time. Sp

Drawer Graph Neural Network for Multi-Instance Learning.

Multi-instance Learning (MIL) aims to classify data bags, while the labels of individual instances within each bag are unknown. Traditional MIL methods take the bag as the fundamental unit of analysis, classifying each bag exclusively based on the features of its constituent instances. However, when different combinations of instances form bags with distinct labels, these methods face a critical challenge: instances are isolated by bag boundaries, which prevents the model from capturing the subtle discrepancies between instance combinations across bags and thereby degrades the accuracy of bag

Towards Medical Image Dataset Distillation: A Progressive Trajectory Matching and Dynamic Diversity Enhancing Method.

Sharing medical image sets is essential yet challenging due to limited resource and strict regulatory, which significantly hinder the development of medical foundation models and the transfer of medical domain knowledge. In this paper, we utilize medical image dataset distillation techniques to enable effective model construction and knowledge transfer without requiring downstream users to directly access the original data. Trajectory matching has become the mainstream distillation technique, yet our empirical findings on medical image datasets reveal two critical phenomena: instability of dis

Camera-Incremental Person Re-Identification Via Geometric Representation Evolution.

Person re-identification (ReID) is a core technology in large-scale intelligent surveillance systems. In practical deployments, surveillance networks evolve continuously as new cameras are incrementally integrated. As the network expands, the system not only encounters new identities but also captures previously known identities from novel camera views. However, existing LReID studies typically assume disjoint identity spaces across stages, failing to model the cumulative evolution of features induced by such expansion. To bridge this gap, we introduce Camera-Incremental Person Re-Identificati

Latency-Aware Adaptive Learning for Nonstationary Data Streams: Coordinating Concept Drift and Delayed Supervision.

Online learning in nonstationary environments is essential for data-stream applications, yet its reliability is often compromised by the coexistence of concept drift and verification latency. Delayed labels may introduce temporal inconsistency in model updates, while evolving distributions require timely adaptation. To address these coupled challenges, an anchor-based temporal consistency management strategy, termed ATCM, is proposed to organize delayed streams into temporally consistent sub-streams through adaptive model allocation and reuse. A drift-guided ensemble of randomized neural netwo
