Two prominent accounts describe the functional organization of human high-level visual cortex. A categorical view emphasizes category-selective areas, while a dimensional view highlights continuous feature maps spanning these areas. Here, we asked whether these two views reflect complementary expressions of the same underlying organization. Using a data-driven decomposition of fMRI responses from human participants (female and male) in face-, body-, and scene-selective areas, we identified spatially overlapping activity patterns that were shared across individuals. Each area encoded multiple i

During natural vision, people make saccades to efficiently sample visual information from complex scenes. While a substantial body of evidence has shown impaired visual information processing around the time of a saccade, it remains unclear how saccades affect the processing of high-level visual attributes-such as semantic category information-which are essential for navigating dynamic environments and supporting complex behavioral goals. Here, we investigated whether/how the processing of semantic category information in naturalistic scenes is altered immediately after a saccade. Through both

Objects typically appear within rich visual scenes. By capitalizing on learnt statistical pairings between objects and scenes, the visual system can use scene information to generate predictions about objects likely to occur within a given environment. Some models of visual system function propose that scene information is extracted from low-spatial frequency components and rapidly propagates through the visual processing hierarchy. This contextual information may help bias perceptual inferences toward objects that are likely to appear within a scene, enacted via top-down feedback carrying pre

In visual working memory, relation-based distractors can induce a memory repulsion effect, yet its spatial boundary and cognitive stage remain unclear. Across two experiments, we examined the spatial modulation and temporal dynamics of this effect. Experiment 1 presented a central target with peripheral distractors arranged as a regular pentagon and manipulated target-distractor spatial distance. Results showed that the repulsion effect decreased monotonically with increasing distance, supporting an absolute-distance account rather than a strict central attentional window account. Experiment 2

Objective.Spatial scheduling of electrode activation ('rastering') is essential for safely operating high-density retinal implants, yet its perceptual consequences remain poorly understood. This study systematically evaluates the impact of raster patterns, or spatial arrangements of sequential electrode activation, on performance and perceived difficulty in simulated prosthetic vision (SPV). By addressing this gap, we aimed to identify patterns that optimize functional vision in retinal implants.Approach.Sighted participants completed letter recognition and motion discrimination tasks under fo

Category selectivity is a fundamental principle of organization of perceptual brain regions. Human occipitotemporal cortex is subdivided into areas that respond preferentially to faces, bodies, artifacts, and scenes. However, observers need to combine information about objects from different categories to form a coherent understanding of the world. How is this multicategory information encoded in the brain? Studying the multivariate interactions between brain regions of male and female human subjects with fMRI and artificial neural networks, we found that the angular gyrus shows joint statisti

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological studies suggest that the ability to compensate for the presence of spatial neglect highly depends on the attentional resources a patient can rely on. The present research aimed to study neglect in situations where attentional resources are limited due to multitasking.
METHOD: We examined two patients more than 3 years after a right-hemispheric stroke. Both had received neuropsychological rehabilitation for left neglect and did not show any impairment in standard tests. We used a dual-task paradigm combining a peripheral target detection task with a central shape

Visual selective attention operates through top-down mechanisms of signal enhancement and suppression, mediated by α-band oscillations. The effects of such top-down signals on local processing in primary visual cortex (V1) remain poorly understood. In this work, we characterize the interplay between large-scale interactions and local activity changes in V1 that orchestrates selective attention, using Granger-causality and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) analysis of EEG source signals. The task required participants to either attend to or ignore oriented gratings. Results from time-varying, dire

Object recognition is challenging because the same object can produce vastly different images, mixing signals related to its identity with signals due to its image attributes, such as size, position, rotation, etc. Previous studies have shown that both signals are present in high-level visual areas, but precisely how they are combined has remained unclear. One possibility is that neurons might encode identity and attribute signals multiplicatively so that each can be efficiently decoded without interference from the other. Here, we show that, in high-level visual cortex, responses of single ne

Understanding how the human brain discriminates complex visual patterns, such as individual faces, is an important issue in Vision Science. Here we tested sensitivity to individual faces using steady-state visual-evoked potentials (SSVEPs). Twelve participants were presented with 90-s sequences of faces appearing at a constant rate (3.5 faces/s) while high-density electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of EEG showed a large response at the fundamental stimulation frequency (3.5 Hz) over posterior electrode sites. This response was much larger when the face identi

This study considered the extent to which 23 children with dyslexia differed from 23 reading age (RA) and 23 chronological age (CA) matched controls in their ability to make temporal judgements about auditory and visual sequences of stimuli, and in the speed of their reactions to the onsets and offsets of visual and auditory stimuli. The children with dyslexia were slower (p = 0.039) than the CA controls in their reactions to non-verbal auditory onsets (tones), were less able to recognize the first stimulus of a sequence of tones (p = 0.022), and were less accurate in identifying the initial p

The most common presenting complaint in posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is reading difficulty. Although often described as an alexia without agraphia, alexia in PCA may have multiple causes, including a primary visuoperceptual etiology, attentional alexia, and central reading difficulty. This study evaluated 14 patients with early PCA and disturbances in reading ability in comparison to 14 normal controls. All 14 patients had a progressive disorder of complex visual functions and neuroimaging evidence of occipitoparietal dysfunction. They underwent a task requiring identification of single le

Retinal input that is suppressed from visual awareness can nevertheless produce measurable aftereffects, revealing neural processes that do not directly result in a conscious percept. We here report that the face identity-specific aftereffect requires a visible face; it is effectively cancelled by binocular suppression or by inattentional blindness of the inducing face. Conversely, the same suppression does not interfere with the orientation-specific aftereffect. Thus, the competition between incompatible or interfering visual inputs to reach awareness is resolved before those aspects of infor

BACKGROUND: Some studies have suggested that in stroke patients, spatial inattention on the cancellation test is closely related to disorganized visual search. However, methods to assess spatial aspects of search organization on cancellation tests have not been well developed. In this study the authors design and evaluate new methods to quantify strategies of spatial exploration on the cancellation test in stroke patients who showed a broad range of spatial attentional abilities, and test whether disorganization and inattention are related.
METHODS: Twenty stroke patients were videotaped whil

A comprehensive set of 31 binocular neuropsychological tasks assessing a series of spatial and non-spatial visuoperceptual abilities was used to study visuoperceptual impairment in a representative group of 49 MS-clinic patients exhibiting neither diagnosed ophthalmological afflictions nor major psychiatric diagnoses. Among these patients, true frequency rate of visuoperceptual impairment, i.e. of subjects failing four or more tasks, was estimated at 26%. The pattern of visuoperceptual impairment was non-uniform, non-selective, restricted and idiosyncratic. Only four tasks yielded significant

This study tests the hypothesis that abnormal motion displacement thresholds coexist with scotomas on a finer spatial scale than is measurable by conventional Humphrey perimetry. Eighteen patients with primary open angle glaucoma in one eye, and 18 age matched normal controls underwent motion displacement threshold testing and high spatial resolution perimetry. The motion displacement thresholds were significantly elevated in the glaucoma eyes, in 73% this exceeded normal limits. Ten glaucoma eyes had normal Humphrey 24-2 field nearest the motion test site: of these seven had abnormally elevat

We have previously reported on the development of black/white pattern reversal VEPs in premature babies of more than 30 weeks post-menstrual age (PMA). Unlike the flash VEP, the pattern reversal VEP shows a similar morphology to that of the full term infant and the major positive component (P1) decreased in latency with increasing PMA. The N1 and N2 components were more likely to be present with increasing maturity. In our present study we are examining the development of the transient chromatic pattern VEP. In order to produce a purely chromatic stimulus it is necessary to remove luminance cu

Research has demonstrated that dyslexic subjects have language processing problems. More recent evidence indicates that dyslexic subjects also suffer a low-level visual information processing deficit. Little evidence is available to indicate the extent to which dyslexic subjects simultaneously show a visual and language processing dysfunction. In this study, 35 normal and 35 dyslexic subjects aged from 7.9 to 14 years of age were compared on three reading process variables, a visual processing score, a test of phonological coding and a test of language comprehension, each of which were shown t

We recorded visually evoked cortical potentials to pattern stimuli (PVECPs) in 22 patients who received a posterior chamber intraocular lens implant. The mean latency of the P100 obtained from patients was not significantly different from that of age-matched normal phakic subjects. Furthermore, we found that both groups showed a similar increased delay of the P100 latency with age. The results of this study indicated that the senile opacity of the crystalline lens does not contribute to changes of PVECPs with age. These alterations may be due to senile changes of the neural pathway.

Contrast sensitivity was measured by means of Arden grating plates in 100 patients on medication for pulmonary tuberculosis. The scores were abnormal in 38.2% of the patients whose therapy included ethambutol for three months, and 36.7% of the patients on similar treatment for six months. In comparison with age matched groups of patients on a regimen where streptomycin replaced ethambutol a statistically significant number of the patients on ethambutol had abnormal scores. This study suggests that Arden contrast sensitivity plates would be effective in detecting subclinical toxic optic neuropa
