Psychophysiological effects of dance/movement therapy on anxiety reduction in adolescents in juvenile detention centers: dopamine and thermoregulatory responses in a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety among adolescents has increased globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adolescents in juvenile detention centers (JDCs) may be particularly vulnerable due to restricted liberty and social isolation. Movement-based interventions such as Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) have been studied as approaches to support emotional regulation. This exploratory study investigated the psychophysiological effects of a structured DMT intervention on anxiety reduction among adolescents in JDCs, focusing on anxiety-related changes in dopamine (DA) levels and body temperature. METHODS: This quas

Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment among rural Chinese older women: anxiety and poor sleep as sequential correlates-A cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are a well-established predictor of late-life cognitive impairment. Furthermore, anxiety and sleep quality-both correlates of cognitive impairment-could mediate the depression-cognition association in older women. Nevertheless, limited research has empirically tested this hypothesis using causal mediation analysis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 718 older women from rural areas of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou provinces in China using convenience sampling. Trained assessors administered the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Chinese Version of

Anxiety and Age, but Not OCD Diagnosis, Predict Infection-Preventive Behaviours in Adolescents During COVID-19.

PURPOSE: To examine whether obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) diagnosis was associated with greater infection-preventive behaviour and altered inhibitory-control performance in adolescents during the early COVID-19 lockdown in Türkiye while considering the roles of age and anxiety. METHODS: Seventy-two adolescents aged 12-18 years, including 22 with OCD and 50 without OCD, completed a COVID-19 preventive behaviour questionnaire and the child and parent versions of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale. Participants also completed an online go/no-go task. Ordinary least squares mode

Investigation of the psychological status of suspected patients during the Coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic.

We explored the psychological changes in suspected patients during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic and obtained evidence for early psychological guidance and intervention in this group. A total of 31 inpatients with suspected COVID-19 were identified at our hospital. The depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-7 scale, and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) mental health self-assessment questionnaire were used to assess depression, anxiety, and overall mental health. Among the patients, 32.3% had symptoms of depr

Processing of phobic stimuli and its relationship to outcome.

In the present study, we explored factors related to successful treatment outcome in a sample of participants with fear of spiders. We specifically examined the relationship of general memory, memory for the phobic stimulus, memory for anxious responses, and perceived self-efficacy to treatment outcome. Forty-eight participants who were afraid of spiders participated in two sessions of in vivo exposure therapy. On day 1, participants completed measures of general memory, memory for the phobic stimulus, recall of anxiety level during exposure tasks, and self-efficacy during exposure tasks. At p

Longitudinal formative assessment reforms in manual therapy education: impacts on psychological wellbeing and course satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Traditional assessment (TA) model in medical education, especially in practice-intensive disciplines such as manual therapy, frequently intensify student stress and neglect psychological wellbeing, underscoring the necessity for creative evaluation strategies. Formative assessment (FA) provides a process-oriented methodology, although its psychological advantages are still insufficiently examined. The study aimed to investigate synergistic effects of FA on students' psychological wellbeing, academic performance, and learning experience in manual therapy courses. METHODS: This stud

Baseline Functional Performance Predicts Better Long-Term Self-Reported Physical Function After Auto-HSCT.

Background/Objectives: Determination of baseline predictors of longer-term quality of life (QOL) after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Auto-HSCT) may identify patients with the greatest supportive care needs. We hypothesized that baseline older age, weight loss, and worse functional performance would negatively predict QOL over two years post-HSCT. Methods: Physical function, body composition, and QOL were assessed before (PRE) and one month (1MO) after Auto-HSCT in U.S. Veterans (N = 23). QOL and survival were also assessed approximately every six months for two years afte

Establishing clinically meaningful severity levels for the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK-13).

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia is an excessive, irrational and debilitating fear of physical movement and activity resulting from a feeling of vulnerability to painful injury or re-injury. The Tampa Scale for kinesiophobia (TSK) is a patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure designed to help identify kinesiophobia. The original version of the TSK had 17 items. A 13-item version was later found to have better psychometric properties and was used in the present study. Although the TSK-13 has been widely studied, one shortcoming is the lack of clinically meaningful score categories. The objective of the

The effect of safranal on anxiety and the MYD88/NF-kb signaling pathway in the hippocampus in a rat model of ulcerative colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with colitis are more likely to experience anxiety symptoms compared to those without the condition. However, the biological mechanisms linking colitis to anxiety remain unclear. This study investigated the potential effects of safranal on anxiety-like behaviors and the involvement of the MYD88/NF-κB signaling cascade within the hippocampus in a rat model of ulcerative colitis induced by acetic acid. METHODS: Thirty-two male rats were randomly divided into four groups: a control group, a colitis group, and two treatment groups receiving safranal at 72.75 or 145.5 mg/

Association of sexual function and psychological symptoms including depression, anxiety and stress in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is a common vaginal infection which could affect the quality of life, romantic relationships, and sexual performance. There is some evidence that psychological problems result in an increased incidence of RVVC by changing the immune systems of individuals. The aim of this study was to determine the association of sexual function and psychological factors including depression, anxiety, and stress in women with RVVC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study design was case controlled. Equal numbers of women with RVVC and uninfected women referred to gynec

Behavioral and cardiovascular effects of 7.5% CO2 in human volunteers.

The study of carbon dioxide (CO2) inhalation in psychiatry has a long and varied history, with recent interest in using inhaled CO2 as an experimental tool to explore the neurobiology and treatment of panic disorder. As a consequence, many studies have examined the panic-like response to the gas either using the single or double breath 35% CO2 inhalation or 5-7% CO2 inhaled for 15-20 min, or rebreathing 5% CO2 for a shorter time. However, this lower dose regime produces little physiological or psychological effects in normal volunteers. For this reason we have studied the effects of a higher c

Spatial anxiety relates to spatial abilities as a function of working memory in children.

Spatial ability is a strong predictor of students' pursuit of higher education in science and mathematics. However, very little is known about the affective factors that influence individual differences in spatial ability, particularly at a young age. We examine the role of spatial anxiety in young children's performance on a mental rotation task. We show that even at a young age, children report experiencing feelings of nervousness at the prospect of engaging in spatial activities. Moreover, we show that these feelings are associated with reduced mental rotation ability among students with hi

Emotional and pain-related factors in neuropsychological assessment following mild traumatic brain injury.

A critical issue in the field of clinical neuropsychology is the idea that emotional or pain-related factors may compromise the validity of neuropsychological assessment. In this study, 53 individuals suffering from mild traumatic brain injury related to motor vehicle accident injury completed commonly used measures of emotional and pain-related functioning. A battery of commonly used neuropsychological tests, assessing attention, learning and memory, language, visuospatial and visuomotor functions, speeded processing, fine-motor skill, and symptom validity, was administered concurrently.
