Mastoid subperiosteal abscess.

Subperiosteal abscess was the indication for surgery in every child with acute mastoiditis who underwent mastoidectomy at our institution since 1972. Nineteen such patients are discussed herein. Positive bacteriologic findings included Streptococcus pyogenes in three patients, Streptococcus pneumoniae in three patients, Mycobacterium tuberculosis in two patients, and enterococcus in the one patient with cholesteatoma. Cultures were more often positive for causative bacteria when taken directly from the abscess before or shortly after beginning antibiotic therapy.

The effect of denervation on bony overgrowth after below knee amputation in rats.

Bony overgrowth of amputated limbs of children is an infrequent but difficult problem. This article presents the hypothesis that the bony overgrowth is under nerve control and may represent an abortive form of partial limb regeneration. Tested in young rats, denervation produces a significant reduction in the mass and length of the bony overgrowth and a reduced rate of periosteal cell mitosis.

Odontogenic myxoma with rare sunburst periosteal reaction: report of two cases and review of the literature.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a benign tumor originating from odontogenic ectomesenchyme. While this tumor displays imaging variability, the sunburst appearance is uncommon and can resemble malignant lesions. In this report, we present two cases of OM exhibiting an imaging sunburst appearance, besides a literature review. A 35-year-old woman and a 21-year-old woman presented with mandibular swelling. Imaging exams revealed extensive radiolucent/hypodense images, with the presence of a sunburst periosteal reaction. The main diagnostic hypothesis for both cases was osteosarcoma. Incisional biopsies

Schneiderian membrane-derived cells have inferior bone-forming capacities compared to other human periosteal-derived cells.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal stem and progenitor cells (SSPCs) are a key component of bone tissue engineering strategies for treating large bone defects. The Schneiderian membrane, a bone-lining membrane of the maxillary sinus, has been proposed as a source of cells with bone-forming capacity. METHODS: Cells were isolated from human Schneiderian membrane (hSMs) samples obtained during Le Fort I orthognathic surgery and compared with previously characterised human periosteal-derived cells (hPDCs) from tibial and mandibular origins. Proliferation, metabolic activity, cellular senescence, surface marker

Periosteal skeletal stem cells can migrate into the bone marrow and support hematopoiesis after injury.

Skeletal stem cells (SSCs) have been isolated from various tissues, including periosteum and bone marrow, where they exhibit key functions in bone biology and hematopoiesis, respectively. The role of periosteal SSCs (P-SSCs) in bone regeneration and healing has been extensively studied, but their ability to contribute to the bone marrow stroma is still under debate. In the present study, we characterized a mouse whole bone transplantation model that mimics the initial bone marrow necrosis and fatty infiltration seen after injury. Using this model and a lineage tracing approach, we observed the…

Medial Femoral Condyle Periosteal Free Flap for Bone Coverage Following Debridement of Intermediate-Stage Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw.

Case report. Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw is a potentially devastating consequence of head and neck irradiation. The progression of ORN can lead to loss of bone, teeth, soft tissue necrosis, pathologic fracture, and oro-cutaneous fistula. Reconstructive surgery has mostly been reserved for late-stage disease where segmental resections are frequently necessary. Evidence is emerging to support earlier treatment in the form of debridement in combination with soft tissue free flaps for intermediate-stage ORN. The authors present a case of a 76-year-old male with persistent Notani 2 ORN of t

Pediatric subperiosteal orbital abscess characterization and prediction of size, location, and management.

INTRODUCTION: Subperiosteal orbital abscess (SPOA) is a serious suppurative complication of pediatric sinusitis. The objective of this study is to stratify patient selection into those best treated medically versus surgically based on clinical outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with SPOA complicating sinusitis treated at a tertiary care pediatric hospital from 2002 through 2016. SPOA was diagnosed by CT scan. Characteristics evaluated include demographics, abscess size, location, and measurements, length of hospital stay, medical and surgical interventions

Innervation is higher above Bone Remodeling Surfaces and in Cortical Pores in Human Bone: Lessons from patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Mounting evidence from animal studies suggests a role of the nervous system in bone physiology. However, little is known about the nerve fib … the nerve profiles density was 5-fold higher in the intracortical pores compared to bone marrow and periosteum. In conclusion, the study shows an anatomical link between innervation and bone remodeling in human bone.

A Case Report of Heel Pain Mimicking Plantar Fasciitis and Osteosarcoma: A Unique Presentation of a Nora's Lesion.

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation, otherwise known as "Nora's lesion," is a rare benign neoplasm first described by Nora in 1983. The exact etiology of this neoplasm remains unknown, and its presentation in the lower extremity presents a diagnostic challenge, as both clinical and radiologic features cannot fully differentiate it from other neoplasms. We present the case of a 48-year-old female with plantar heel pain secondary to Nora's lesion mimicking plantar fasciitis and periosteal osteosarcoma. Following bone biopsy for histopathologic analysis, the patient's symptoms spon

Vascularized thumb metacarpal periosteal pedicled flap for scaphoid nonunion: An anatomical study and pediatric case report.

PURPOSE: Through an anatomical review, the primary aim of this study was to delineate the dorsal thumb metacarpal (TM) periosteal branches of the radial artery (RA). In addition, we report here the clinical utility of a vascularized TM periosteal pedicled flap (VTMPF), supplied by the first dorsal metacarpal artery (FDMA), in a complex case of scaphoid nonunion. METHODS: Ten latex-colored upper limbs from fresh human cadavers were used. Branches of the RA were dissected under 3x loupe magnification, noting the periosteal branches arising from the FDMA. The VTMPF was measured for both length (
