Hydrogen peroxide injected into a fistula or perianal abscess produces a jet of white bubbles from the internal orifice on the dentate line. This technique has been helpful in locating this often elusive ostium. Failure to produce such an efflux warns one that the pathology was different from what was expected. Confidence to abandon the search in the absence of an efflux is developing, provided the dictates of gravity are respected in positioning the patient so that the anus lies above the abscess.

The level of certain parameters of lipid peroxidation and the activity of lysosome hydrolases were studied on the shock model in rats. It was established that the traumatic shock in the experiment is accompanied by the growth of the level of over-oxidation products (malonic dialdehyde, diene conjugates), the rate of erythrocyte hemolysis as well as by an increase in the hydrolase activity. Administration of ionol (60 mg/kg) inhibits the higher activity of radical-free lipid oxidation, decreases the damage of membrane structure and the metabolism disturbance.

The biochemical effect of vitamin E supplementation to mothers with threatened premature delivery and to premature infants after birth has been studied. Although a weak correlation was found between maternal and cord blood vitamin E levels at birth, cord blood levels were not significantly higher in the infants from supplemented mothers than those from unsupplemented mothers. Reactions of ferric horseradish peroxidase with hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen peroxide were studied as a function of pressure. Activation volumes are small and differ in sign (delta V = 1.7 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + HCN and -1.5 +/- 0.5 ml/mol for peroxidase + H2O2). The temperature dependence of cyanide binding to horseradish peroxidase was also determined. A comparison is made of relevant parameters for cyanide binding and compound I formation.

Xanthine dehydrogenase engaged in catalyzing the oxidation of substrate by oxygen is repidly inactivated by the hydrogen peroxide generated during the reaction. Experimental evidence shows that peroxide reacts more readily with the reduced than with the oxidized form of the enzyme.
