Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are toxic compounds that occur naturally or are the output of anthropogenic activities that negatively impact both humans and wildlife. A number of diseases are associated with these disruptors, including reproductive disorders, cardiovascular disorders, kidney disease, neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. Due to their integral role in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, packaging companies, agro-industries, pesticides, and plasticizers, the scientific awareness on natural and artificial EDCs are increasing. As these xenobiotic compounds te

Dichloromethane (DCM; CH2Cl2) is a widespread pollutant with anthropogenic and natural sources. Anaerobic DCM-dechlorinating bacteria use the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway, yet dechlorination reaction mechanisms remain unclear and the enzyme(s) responsible for carbon-chlorine bond cleavage have not been definitively identified. Of the three bacterial taxa known to carry out anaerobic dechlorination of DCM, 'Candidatus Formimonas warabiya' strain DCMF is the only organism that can also ferment non-chlorinated substrates, including quaternary amines (i.e., choline and glycine betaine) and methanol. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for approximately 60-80% of dementia cases worldwide and is characterized by an accumulation of extracellular senile plaques composed of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) containing hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Sporadic or late-onset AD (LOAD) represents 95 % of the AD cases and its etiology does not appear to follow Mendelian laws of inheritance, thus, implicating the role of epigenetic programming and environmental factors. Apolipoprotein allele 4 (ApoE4), the only est

Inland water is very susceptible to the input of pollutants. However, little is known about the occurrence of antibiotics in inland lakes. In this study, a total of 83 target antibiotics were quantified in water and sediment samples collected from the Qinghai Lake, the largest inland lake of China located on the northeast of Qinghai-Tibet plateau, and its inflowing rivers. The results showed that 27 and 25 antibiotics were detected in water and sediments, respectively, with the summed concentrations (SUM) of 1.14-17.3 ng/L and 0.72-8.31 ng/g. Compared with the input rivers, significantly highe

Norfloxacin (NOR) is a persistent organic pollutant and can be effectively removed from effluent by adsorption of biochar. However, the presence of other emerging contaminants, such as surfactants, will potentially alter adsorption performance of norfloxacin by biochar and the molecular-scale mechanisms of the interaction between surfactants and biochar remain poorly understood. In this study, adsorption of norfloxacin on magnetic biochar prepared with iron-containing furfural residue (FRMB) in the presence or absence of anionic surfactants was investigated. The adsorption of NOR was significa

Wastewater treatment plants are known to release microplastics that have been detected in aquatic and terrestrial organisms constituting part of the human diet. Chlorination of wastewater-borne microplastics was hypothesized to induce chemical and physical changes detectable by Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In the laboratory, virgin plastics (∼0.05 × 2 × 2 mm) were exposed to differing sterilization conditions representative of dosages used in the disinfection of drinking water, wastewater, and heavily contaminated surfaces. Polypropylene (PP) was most resista

The present report describes a 13month pilot remediation study that consists of a combination of Cr(VI) (4.4 to 57mg/l) geofixation and dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes (400 to 6526μg/l), achieved by the sequential use of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles and in situ biotic reduction supported by whey injection. The remediation process was monitored using numerous techniques, including physical-chemical analyses and molecular biology approaches which enabled both the characterization of the mechanisms involved in pollutant transformation and the description of the overall backgro

Clean water is a limited resource that is essential to human existence. Pharmaceuticals have been developed to improve the health and safety of living beings. Still, their widespread application and consumption, along with their increased industrial production and subsequent improper disposal, have resulted in unprecedented levels of pharmaceutical pollutants in water systems, adversely impacting the health of humans and aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are ineffective in removing these persistent contaminants, leading to their distribution and accum

The remediation of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in groundwater presents a persistent challenge, as conventional technologies suffer from side reactions with bulk water rather than chlorinated solvents within DNAPL source zones. By engineering DNAPL-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels with precisely controlled hydrophobic domains, we fabricated nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) reactors (nZVI@PNIPAM) via in situ reduction of incorporated Fe3+ ions. The hydrogel encapsulation enabled nZVI to remain well-dispersed, spontaneously penetrated porous media, and signifi

Microplastics (MPs), a type of emerging persistent pollutant, are attracting increasing attention from both scholars and governments. Agricultural soil is considered an important sink for MPs due to the use of plastic mulches and the application of sewage sludge to fields. Widely used pesticides often coexist with MPs in soils, potentially causing co-contamination that threatens the ecosystem. The interaction between pesticides and soil organic matter (SOM) influences the behavior and toxicity of pesticides in the soil environment, and MPs may participate in this interaction. Preliminary theor

Imidacloprid (IMI), one of the most extensively used neonicotinoid insecticides, has become a widespread environmental contaminant owing to its high water solubility, persistence, and intensive agricultural applications. Its frequent detection in soil and aquatic environments has raised growing concerns because of its adverse effects on pollinators, aquatic organisms, wildlife, and potential risks to human health. Although numerous remediation technologies have been developed, existing reviews largely focus on individual treatment approaches and provide limited comparative evaluation of their

Ofloxacin (OFX) represents a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health due to its environmental persistence, antimicrobial activity, and potential to promote drug resistance. However, how to achieve its efficient and environmentally friendly removal remains a challenge. In this study, a novel Mn3O4/NiCo2S4 composite catalyst was constructed for the first time via a hydrothermal method to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the rapid removal of OFX. Under optimal conditions, the NM-2/PMS system achieved 90.5 % removal within 20 min and exhibits excellent catalytic performance a

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) must be treated in large volumes to reach nanogram-per-litre regulatory limits, yet destructive technologies remain confined to the laboratory, while separation methods only concentrate the problem into hazardous waste. This study integrates three functions, enzymatic C-F bond cleavage, fluoride capture by Lewis-acidic metal-organic frameworks, and capacitive electro-swing regeneration, into a single hierarchical architecture that acts as a continuous PFAS-to-fluoride converter. Trametes versicolor laccase and its ABTS mediator are co-immobilised with

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a widespread and persistent organic pollutant that affects aquatic life and ecosystems. Our study uses zebrafish larvae to assess the effects of DEP on metabolic pathways involved in growth and development. Zebrafish larvae exposed to DEP showed an increased mortality rate of 97% and a reduced hatching rate of 37% at the highest concentration. Also, exposure to DEP caused an increased heartbeat compared to the untreated control, indicating DEP-induced developmental toxicity. Moreover, elevated ROS levels and significant changes in other biomarkers like SOD, CAT, GPx,

Halogenated bisphenols (HBPs) are widely detected environmental contaminants present in water systems, soil, and biota. The incorporation of halogen substituents (Cl, Br) enhances their environmental persistence and potential toxicological effects. Understanding the cellular responses to HBPs exposure in living organisms is therefore essential for evaluating their human health implications. This study comprehensively characterizes the binding patterns and interaction mechanisms of HBPs with the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) through an integrated approach combining multispectral an

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are persistent pollutants that widely exist in a variety of environmental media and can enter organisms through a variety of exposure pathways. An increasing number of experimental studies suggest that MNPs may have an effect on reproductive processes. This review will integrate recent research and explore the mechanisms of MNPs and their related chemicals in the reproductive system, including male and female germ cells, embryos, mitochondrial function, and apoptosis-related pathways. The aim is to gain a clearer understanding of the reproductive toxicity

Benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) is a known persistent organic environmental pollutant. This study aimed to analyze the influence of exposure to BbF on liver injury in Balb/c mice. After oral administration of BbF to male Balb/c mice for 12 weeks, the findings demonstrate that BbF exposure leads to reduced weight gain and hepatic oxidative stress, characterized by elevated ROS, MDA, and LPO levels. Additionally, it results in reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, the presence of plasma lipid disorders along with increased hepatic free fatty acids and alterations in fatty acid compo
