Relationship between borderline personality features, emotion regulation, and non-suicidal self-injury in depressed adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents and has been linked to mental disorders and suicide in addition to physical injuries. According to the empirical avoidance model, adolescents with NSSI have stronger emotional affect and poorer emotional regulation than those without NSSI, and these constitute core features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The relationship between borderline personality features, emotional regulation, and NSSI in the population is unclear. This study explored these associations to provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of NS

Associations between personality disorder characteristics and treatment outcomes in people with co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders are highly comorbid with alcohol misuse and depressive symptomatology; however, few studies have investigated treatment outcomes in this population. The aim of this study was to examine relationships between baseline personality disorder cluster profiles and overall and treatment-related changes for those with co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression. METHODS: Secondary analysis was conducted using a subset of data (N = 290) from two randomised controlled trials of psychological interventions for co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression, which did not spe

The associations between personality functioning (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B) in the alternative model for personality disorders in DSM-5: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5 AMPD) requires the assessment of personality functioning (Criterion A), using the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS), and the presence of pathological personality traits (Criterion B), operationalized with the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5). Several studies have investigated the associations between the LPFS and the PID-5 personality traits as well as the normal-range personality traits of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of perso

Personality difficulties and response to community-based psychological treatment for anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that comorbid personality disorder may be associated with a less favourable treatment outcome for individuals with depression and anxiety disorder. However, little is known about whether personality difficulties are associated with treatment outcomes within Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services-the largest platform for treating depression and anxiety in England, UK. Secondary aims were to investigate i) whether individual personality difficulties are associated with treatment outcome and ii) whether findings are moderated by treatmen

[Personality and coping with stress in patients suffering from functional dysphonia].

The examination covers the personality of 20 functional dysphonics, 14 individuals suffering from organic voice disorders and a group of 20 control persons when exposed to stress and its working up. In examining the group of functional dysphonics a significant positive self-assessment regarding their personality with a clear tendency to restraint has become clear. In comparison with the control persons an intensified anxiety state in situations causing stress is the result. Thus the influence of life events has been shown to have an important effect on the etiopathogenesis of functional dyspho

The Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales: Linking the adjective and statement-based inventories with the Big Five Inventory in English and German-speaking samples.

Jaak Panksepp's Affective Neuroscience Theory is of high relevance not only for a better understanding of affective brain disorders but also in personality research. To make Panksepp's theory more accessible for psychologists and psychiatrists, Davis, Panksepp, and Normansell (2003) developed the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scales (ANPS). These scales assess the manifestation of the primary emotional traits in humans based on a personality trait approach. Given their putative foundation in old subcortical areas in the brain, these primary emotional traits (assessed via the ANPS) could r

Utility of the temperament and character inventory (TCI) in outcome prediction of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding: preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Research about personality factors involved in successful outcome after bariatric surgery has led to contrasting results. The reasons for such discrepancies may include the lack of assessment of adaptive personality traits and of psychiatric co-morbidity, which may limit the reliability of personality findings. This study aimed to provide exploratory data regarding preoperative personality dimensions and weight loss prediction 1 year after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Both normal and deviant personality patterns were assessed by means of the Temperament and Chara

Trait Considerations in Clinical Practice: A Commentary Based on Gubler et al. (2024) and Lau et al. (2024).

Research by Gubler et al. (2024) and Lau et al. (2024) evaluated measures of a trait constellation scale (DOES; Depth of Processing, Overstimulation, Emotional Reactivity and Empathy, Sensing the Subtle) and an adult playfulness scale (SMAP; English Short Measure for Adult Playfulness), respectively, bringing a new focus to the role of trait features in mental health and adjustment. We discuss consideration of these trait characteristics in clinical assessment and treatment planning, with attention to their potential cross-cultural applicability and manifestations.

Broader Issues in Test Translation and Validation: A Commentary Inspired by Macina et al. (2023).

Macina et al. (2023) recently reported mixed results on the German translation of the Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale (SIFS). By focusing on suboptimal indices of structural validity, they recommended choosing other available instruments over the SIFS in future research on personality impairment. Reflecting on Macina et al.'s overall conclusions inspired us to consider broader issues in the field of personality impairment assessment. In this commentary, we discuss some issues regarding test translation and validity raised by Macina et al.'s article. We advise against assuming equivale

Psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder as chain mediators between personality traits and cognitive functioning in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Personality is a unique behavioral trait; cognition is how an individual knows and understands things. It is essential for everyday daily living. In patients with breast cancer, despite the growing body of research on personality and cognitive functioning, exploration of the underlying mechanisms is still relatively scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of Big Five personality traits on cognitive functioning and the mediating role of psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) between personality traits and cognitive functioning in pati

Personality Disorders: Current Conceptualizations and Challenges.

The personality disorders are said to be at the vanguard in the shift to a dimensional model of classification, as exemplified in the Alternative Model of Personality (AMPD) presented in Section III of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) for emerging models and in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Considered herein are some limitations and challenges. For the DSM-5 AMPD trait model, these include problematic placements, inadequate coverage, perceived complexity, and lack of cutoff points. For the DSM-5

A quantitative analysis of the relationship between affective state and personality ratings in inpatient depression (RAPID).

BACKGROUND: The relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and personality disorders is complex, with implications for diagnosis and treatment. We sought to explore the relationship between these disorders quantitatively in an inpatient setting. METHODS: We conducted a structured observational study exploring symptoms of depression and selected neurocognitive functions over the span of an inpatient admission in those with depression and personality disorders. Sixty inpatients presenting with symptoms of depression completed ratings of mood and neurocognitive function. Diagnosis was

Autistic Personality Traits and Treatment Outcome for Alcohol Use Disorders.

The importance of personality traits for the outcome of psychiatric treatment, including treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD), has been widely acknowledged. Also, research on autism spectrum disorders has evolved in recent years, emphasizing that the behavioral traits within these neuropsychiatric disorders exist on a dimension both within and outside the boundaries of psychopathology. In the present study, the relationship between personality traits associated with autistic functioning and level of alcohol use among patients before and after concluded AUD treatment was investigated. The p

Personality and the risk of cancer: a 16-year follow-up study of the GAZEL cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Large-scale prospective studies do not support an association between neuroticism and extroversion with cancer incidence. However, research on other personality constructs is inconclusive. This longitudinal study examined the associations between four personality measures, Type 1, "suppressed emotional expression"; Type 5, "rational/antiemotional"; hostility; and Type A with cancer incidence. METHODS: Personality measures were available for 13,768 members in the GAZEL cohort study (baseline assessment in 1993). Follow-up for diagnoses of primary cancers was obtained from January 1,
