Formation of associations in auditory cortex by slow changes of tonic firing.

We review event-related slow firing changes in the auditory cortex and related brain structures. Two types of changes can be distinguished, namely increases and decreases of firing, lasting in the order of seconds. Triggering events can be auditory stimuli, reinforcers, and behavioral responses. Slow firing changes terminate with reinforcers and possibly with auditory stimuli and behavioral responses. A necessary condition for the emergence of slow firing changes seems to be that subjects have learnt that consecutive sensory or behavioral events are contingent on reinforcement. They disappear

Affective modulation of the startle eyeblink and postauricular reflexes in autism spectrum disorder.

Eyeblink and postauricular reflexes to standardized affective images were examined in individuals without (n = 37) and with (n = 20) autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Affective reflex modulation in control participants replicated previous findings. The ASD group, however, showed anomalous reflex modulation patterns, despite similar self-report ratings of pictures. Specifically, the ASD group demonstrated exaggerated eyeblink responses to pleasant images and exaggerated postauricular responses to unpleasant images. Although ASD is often conceptualized in terms of specific deficits in affective

Initiating the development of multisensory integration by manipulating sensory experience.

The multisensory integration capabilities of superior colliculus neurons emerge gradually during early postnatal life as a consequence of experience with cross-modal stimuli. Without such experience neurons become responsive to multiple sensory modalities but are unable to integrate their inputs. The present study demonstrates that neurons retain sensitivity to cross-modal experience well past the normal developmental period for acquiring multisensory integration capabilities. Experience surprisingly late in life was found to rapidly initiate the development of multisensory integration, even m

[Awareness during anesthesia with sevoflurane: a case report].

We report a case of a patient who experienced awareness during general anesthesia with sevoflurane. A 71-year-old man, weighing 57 kg, was operated on for a malignant tumor of the parotid gland. He was given 2 mg diazepam orally as a premedication. General anesthesia was induced by thiamylal 200 mg, fentanyl 50 microg, and up to 5% of sevoflurane. Muscle relaxation was obtained with vecuronium 6 mg, and the patient was intubated. After induction, fentanyl 150 microg was added, but no other intravenous anesthetics or muscle relaxants were used. The end-expiratory concentration of sevoflurane wa

Hemiextinction induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation over the right temporo-parietal junction.

Whereas it is widely accepted that the parietal cortex is crucial for visual attention, the role of the temporal cortex and the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) is less clear. There are clinical reports of patients with lesions in different posterior temporal areas which exhibit contralateral visual neglect but this syndrome seems to be less frequent than in patients with parietal lesions. In a previous study, we could show that single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the right inferior parietal cortex is capable to induce both neglect-like and extinction-like impairments of p

Acute dose of alcohol affects cognitive components of reaction time to an omitted stimulus: differences among sensory systems.

RATIONALE: The possibility that moderate blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) may impair cognitive processes before disturbing motor functions has raised concern about the safety of BACs <or=80 mg/100 ml. Reaction time (RT) to the presentation of a stimulus or to the omission of a regularly occurring stimulus has been fractionated into independent premotor (cognitive) and motor (movement) components. It has been suggested that cognitive processes may be impaired at lower BACs than are motor processes, but the effects of moderate rising and declining BACs on these component RT measures have not

Altered temporal profile of visual-auditory multisensory interactions in dyslexia.

Recent studies have demonstrated that dyslexia is associated with deficits in the temporal encoding of sensory information. While most previous studies have focused on information processing within a single sensory modality, it is clear that the deficits seen in dyslexia span multiple sensory systems. Surprisingly, although the development of linguistic proficiency involves the rapid and accurate integration of auditory and visual cues, the capacity of dyslexic individuals to integrate information between the different senses has not been systematically examined. To test this, we studied the e

Does interhemispheric competition mediate motion-induced blindness? A transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Motion-induced blindness (MIB) is a phenomenon, perhaps related to perceptual rivalry, where stationary targets disappear and reappear in a cyclic mode when viewed against a background (mask) of coherent, apparent 3-D motion. Since MIB has recently been shown to share similar temporal properties with binocular rivalry, we probed the appearance-disappearance cycle of MIB using unilateral, single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)--a manipulation that has previously been shown to influence binocular rivalry. Effects were seen for both hemispheres when the timing of TMS was determined

Increased variability of paced finger tapping accuracy following repetitive magnetic stimulation of the cerebellum in humans.

Imaging and lesion studies suggest that the cerebellum is involved in the self-generation of timed motor responses. Using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we studied the effects of transient disruption of the lateral or medial cerebellum on a paced-finger-tapping task (PFT). Results show greater variability on the PFT task following a 5 min train of 1 Hz rTMS to the medial cerebellum. Magnetic stimulation of the lateral cerebellum or motor cortex, and sham stimulation, had no effect on performance. Expanding the results of neuroimaging studies, these data show the causal li

Seizure precipitants and perceived self-control of seizures in adults with poorly-controlled epilepsy.

This study was set up in order to investigate the prevalence and nature of seizure precipitants and self-control behaviours in adults with intractable seizures. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 100 patients attending neurology or neuropsychiatry epilepsy out-patient clinics. The interview included six questions regarding seizure precipitants, the extent to which the patients seek and avoid precipitants, and their ability to induce or abort seizures. The study revealed that over 90% of the participants could identify at least one seizure precipitant. Stress, depression, tiredness

Auditory hallucinations inhibit exogenous activation of auditory association cortex.

Percepts unaccompanied by a veridical stimulus, such as hallucinations, provide an opportunity for mapping the neural correlates of conscious perception. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can reveal localized changes in blood oxygenation in response to actual as well as imagined sensory stimulation. The safe repeatability of fMRI enabled us to study a patient with schizophrenia while he was experiencing auditory hallucinations and when hallucination-free (with supporting data from a second case). Cortical activation was measured in response to periodic exogenous auditory and visual

Valproate reduces spontaneous generalized spikes and waves but not photoparoxysmal reactions in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies.

PURPOSE: Patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGEs) often present with interictal spike-wave discharges (SWDs) at rest (spontaneous SWDs), during hyperventilation, and in response to photic stimulation (photoparoxysmal response or PPR). Valproic acid (VPA) is a first-line antiepileptic drug for therapy of patients with IGE. Herein we investigated the effect of VPA on all three types of SWDs in children and adolescents with IGE. METHODS: Routine electroencephalography (EEG) during wakefulness, which was recorded before VPA monotherapy and up to four times during the first year of t…

Tuning out emotional distractors by tuning in theta rhythm: improving visual working memory using transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The relation between attentional control and visual working memory (vWM) has previously been studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). For example, it has been shown that rhythmic TMS (rhTMS) can enhance attentional control and, consequently, vWM performance, by boosting prefrontal theta rhythm power. However, it remains unclear if the rhTMS protocol used to improve attentional control for neutral valence distractors can do the same for emotional distractors. Moreover, attentional control can be applied in different ways, either by amplifying relevant stimulus representation or by

Multisensory integration and motor resonance in the primary motor cortex.

Humans are endowed with a motor system that resonates to speech sounds, but whether concurrent visual information from lip movements can improve speech perception at a motor level through multisensory integration mechanisms remains unknown. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore behavioral and neurophysiological correlates of multisensory influences on motor resonance in speech perception. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), by single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied over the left lip muscle (orbicularis oris) representation in the primary motor cortex, were recorded i

Paired-Pulse Parietal-Motor Stimulation Differentially Modulates Corticospinal Excitability across Hemispheres When Combined with Prism Adaptation.

Rightward prism adaptation ameliorates neglect symptoms while leftward prism adaptation (LPA) induces neglect-like biases in healthy individuals. Similarly, inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) induces neglect-like behavior, whereas on the left PPC it ameliorates neglect symptoms and normalizes hyperexcitability of left hemisphere parietal-motor (PPC-M1) connectivity. Based on this analogy we hypothesized that LPA increases PPC-M1 excitability in the left hemisphere and decreases it in the right one. In an attempt to shed s

Multisensory cues improve sensorimotor synchronisation.

Synchronising movements with events in the surrounding environment is an ubiquitous aspect of everyday behaviour. Often, information about a stream of events is available across sensory modalities. While it is clear that we synchronise more accurately to auditory cues than other modalities, little is known about how the brain combines multisensory signals to produce accurately timed actions. Here, we investigate multisensory integration for sensorimotor synchronisation. We extend the prevailing linear phase correction model for movement synchronisation, describing asynchrony variance in terms

Epilepsy with eyelid myoclonia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy with eyelid myoclonia (EEM), previously known as Jeavons syndrome, is an under-recognized idiopathic generalized epilepsy characterized by eyelid myoclonia, often triggered by photic stimulation or eye closure. Despite its classification under absence epilepsies, the clinical and neurophysiological spectrum of EEM remains heterogeneous. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane were searched from inception until January 16, 2025. Eligible studies reported clinical, electrophy…

A novel approach for migraine detection using localized component filtering and electroencephalographic spectral asymmetry index.

Background: This study aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of migraine detection by combining the localized component filtering (LCF) method with the electroencephalographic (EEG) spectral asymmetry index (SASI) method. The integration of LCF and SASI in the frequency domain under 3 Hz photic stimulation offers a novel approach for robust classification. Methods: EEG recordings from 13 control subjects and 15 migraineurs were used in this study. The SASI values, obtained from LCF pre-processed signals, served as features for classification. The K-means clustering algorithm was applied…
