This work investigated the effects of swine wastewater-derived biogas on microalgae biomass production and nutrient removal rates from piggery wastewater concomitantly with biogas filtration. Photobioreactors with dominant Scenedesmus spp. were prepared using non-sterile digestate and exposed to different photoperiods. In the presence of biogas and autotrophic conditions microalgae yield of 1.1±0.2 g L(-1) (growth rate of 141.8±3.5 mg L(-1) d(-1)) was obtained leading to faster N-NH3 and P-PO4(3-) assimilation rate of 21.2±1.2 and 3.5±2.5 mg L(-1) d(-1), respectively. H2S up to 3000 ppmv was n…

By using immunohistochemistry, a network of nerve fibers containing pituitary adenylate-cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) was demonstrated in the pineal gland of the golden hamster, a photoperiodic species often used in pineal and circadian rhythm research. The nerve fibers are present in the capsule from where they permeate into the pineal perivascular spaces and parenchyma. Immuno-electron microscopy showed the PACAPergic nerve terminals, with clear transmitter vesicles, to terminate in the interstitial spaces between the pinealocytes or in the perivascular spaces. Some of the PACAPergi…

The arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) is a medium-sized predator of the high Arctic experiencing extreme seasonal fluctuations in food availability, photoperiod and temperature. In this study, the plasma leptin, ghrelin and growth hormone (GH) concentrations of male arctic foxes were determined during a food deprivation period of 13 days and the subsequent recovery in November and May. Leptin, ghrelin and GH were present in arctic fox plasma in amounts comparable to other carnivores. The plasma leptin concentrations did not react to food deprivation unlike in humans and rodents. However, the leptin …

The primary structure of a pineal gland-derived antigonadotropic decapeptide (AGD) was determined recently, and a synthetic analog prepared by solid state methods. Adult male Harlan SD rats were maintained under controlled photoperiods. Each was fitted stereotaxically with a stainless steel cannula for infusion into a right lateral ventricle. Each cannula was attached to a subcutaneous osmotic minipump filled either with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or the AGD in CSF (0.5 micrograms/microliters). Additional Tygon microbore cannulae were inserted through the femoral artery and placed in…

Circadian rhythmicities are oscillations of physiological cycles designed to create temporal organization. Circadian rhythms ensure that physiological mechanisms are expressed in proper relationship to each other and the 24 hour day. Light is the main zeitgeber ("time giver") for biological clocks. The daily variations in light intensity from dawn to dusk, and seasonally due to the rotation of the earth, act upon organisms to give them photoperiodic information. This entrainment allows them to vary biologically to prepare for reproduction, hibernation, migration and the daily adaptations neces…

The present experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of pinealectomy and bilateral enucleation on the ovarian activity in Rana perezi frogs maintained in 12-h light--12-h dark photoperiod and 20 +/- 1 degrees C during the vitellogenetic growth in late autumn. These environmental conditions, mainly temperature, induce a gonadal and metabolic response similar to that observed in the natural habitat in summer: a marked ovarian follicular regression, a depletion of the energetic resources from fat bodies and liver, and a minimum in oestradiol circulating levels. This response is par…

Under all photoperiods which we encounter in nature, the pattern of the N-acetyltransferase rhythm is determined by the entraining effect of light on the pacemaker, but not by the suppressant effect of light.

The Period (Per) gene was first identified in Drosophila as a key regulator of circadian rhythms, with mutations that altered or abolished behavioral rhythmicity. Mammals possess 3 homologs, Per1, Per2, and Per3. Here, we systematically compared the circadian properties of mice deficient in each Per gene, singly and in combination, under constant darkness (DD). We analyzed their free-running periods (τ) and phase response curves (PRCs) to 6-h light pulses (6-h LPs). Each Per-deficient line exhibited distinct circadian characteristics. Per1-deficient mice (including Per1-/- Per3-/- double mutan

Most of the life forms on Earth have gradually evolved an endogenous biological clock under the long-term influence of periodic daily light-dark cycles. This biological clock system plays a crucial role in the orderly progression of life activities. In mammals, central circadian clock is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus and the function of the biological clock relies on a transcription-translation negative feedback loop. As a negative regulator in this loop, the function of CHRONO is less known. To deeply explore the role of the Chrono gene in rhythm entrainment and p

This experiment investigated the effects of an ecologically relevant level of dim light at night (dLAN) on behavior, physiology and fat metabolism associated gene expressions in central and peripheral tissues of adult male zebra finches that were hatched and raised in 12:12 h LD cycle (Ev, day = 150 ± 5 lx; Ev, night = 0 lx) at 22 ± 2 °C temperature. Half of the birds (n = 8) were maintained on LD cycle and temperature, as before (control), to the other half of birds the 12 h dark period was dimly illuminated at ~ 5 lx (dim light at night, dLAN; Ev, day = 150 ± 5 lx; Ev, night = ~ 5 lx) for 6

Circadian rhythms are endogenous biological cycles that regulate physiology and behavior for optimal adaptive function and survival; they are synchronized to precisely 24 hours by daily light exposure. Disruption of the daily light-dark (LD) cycle by exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) dysregulates core clock genes and biological function. Exposure to ALAN has been associated with increased health risks in humans, and elderly individuals are at elevated risk for poor outcome from disease and often experience elevated exposure to ALAN due to increased care requirements. The role of dis

Seasonal neuroendocrine cycles that govern annual changes in reproductive activity, energy metabolism and hair growth are almost ubiquitous in mammals that have evolved at temperate and polar latitudes. Changes in nocturnal melatonin secretion regulating gene expression in the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary stalk are a critical common feature in seasonal mammals. The PT sends signal(s) to the pars distalis of the pituitary to regulate prolactin secretion and thus the annual moult cycle. The PT also signals in a retrograde manner via thyroid-stimulating hormone to tanycytes, which line th

OBJECTIVES: Controlled artificial daylight exposure, such as light therapy, is effective in bipolar depression, but the association between uncontrolled daytime light and depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD) is unclear. This study investigated the association between daytime light exposure under real-life situations and depressive symptom in patients with BD.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 181 outpatients with BD. The average daytime light intensity and the total duration of light intensity of ≥1000 lux were recorded over 7 consecutive days using an actigraph that measur

Animals living outside tropical zones experience seasonal changes in the environment and accordingly, adapt their physiology and behavior in reproduction, molting, and migration. Subtropical birds are excellent models for the study of seasonal reproduction because of their rapid and dramatic response to changes in photoperiod. For example, testicular weight typically changes by more than a 100-fold. In birds, the eyes are not necessary for seasonal reproduction, and light is instead perceived by deep brain photoreceptors. Functional genomic analysis has revealed that long day (LD)-induced thyr…

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients who suffer sudden cardiac death die predominantly during the night. We aimed to investigate whether all cardiovascular-related deaths display the same night-time peak as sudden cardiac death.
METHODS: Data from a large cohort of adults who underwent full-night polysomnography between 1985 and 2015 in a university-affiliated sleep clinic were analyzed. Time and cause of death of these patients and of persons from the general population were identified in death certificates from the State Health Secretariat. The day-night pattern of cardiovascu

Exposure of the chick embryo to different wavelengths of light of the same intensity has shown that only certain wavelengths may be important in generating visual asymmetries. This study aimed to detect the possible influence of different wavelengths of light on development of asymmetry of social recognition in zebrafish larvae, tested using the fish's mirror image as the stimulus. From fertilization until day 10 post-hatching zebrafish were kept in five different lighting conditions: natural light/dark (LD) cycle, complete darkness (DD), and artificial LD cycles with 14 h of monochromatic lig

PURPOSE: The incidence of vasovagal syncope is more common in the morning. Previous researchers have reported negligible diurnal variation in the physiological responses associated with initial orthostatic hypotension (IOH). Nevertheless, physical activity and sleep prior to morning and afternoon test times have not been controlled and may influence the findings. We designed a semi-constant routine protocol to examine diurnal variation in cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular responses to active standing.
METHODS: At 06:00 and 16:00 hours, nine males (27 ± 9 years) completed an upright-stand

The extent to which changes in ultradian and circadian rhythms (URs and CRs) reflect seasonal variations in pineal melatonin secretion was assessed in male Siberian hamsters transferred from long to short day lengths. The period of the locomotor activity UR increased from 2.5 h in long days to 4.5 h in short day lengths, but this and most other features of the short-day ultradian phenotype were unaffected by pinealectomy; only the short-day increase in UR amplitude was counteracted by pineal extirpation. Virtually all UR components were unaffected by gonadectomy or replacement testosterone or

The control of reproduction in goats is interesting for technical reasons (synchronization of kiddings, adjustment to forage availability or to economy), and for genetic reasons (identification and dissemination of improved genotypes). The use of short-light rhythms leads to markedly increased production of semen per buck and prevents occurrence of a 'resting' season. Recent identification of a bulbourethral lipase in goat spermatozoa opens new perspectives in sperm preservation. Light plus 'short day' treatments also allow induction of out-of-season oestrous cycles and ovulations leading to e
