Based on evidence suggesting anxiolytic properties of the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine, this study was conducted to evaluate whether olanzapine may be efficacious in treating social anxiety disorder (SAD). This pilot study describes a prospective life-charting method for posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. This method summarizes daily symptoms, functional impairment, life events, substance use, and treatment. Findings include experience with 17 cases over periods lasting from 3 to 25 months, with a description of 4 case examples that are characteristic of the pilot sample. An RT-PCR-based assay for detecting calicivirus RNA was developed. Samples of feces of 124 children patients with acute gastroenteritis were tested for the presence of NLV-1, NLV-2, and SLV. Calicivirus infection was detected in 6.4% of cases of children with acute gastroenteritis. All isolates were non-homogeneous Norwalk like Viruses 2 genotype with maximum nucleotide homology to the strains, isolated in UK and Japan. The use of the RT-PCR assay developed in our laboratory allowed the etiology of 22.2% of cases of acute gastroenteritis of uncertain etiology to be identified.

A new route of sublingual administration of misoprostol was used by 25 women with first trimester, non-viable intrauterine gestation and by 18 women requesting mid-trimester termination of pregnancy. Twenty-three women (92%, 95% CI 75, 98) with first trimester, non-viable gestation had complete abortion after sublingual misoprostol. All women (100%, 95% CI 82, 100) requesting second trimester abortion aborted, and the median induction-to-abortion interval was 11.6 h. We compared power Doppler sonography to laboratory indices of disease activity in patients with knee arthritis to determine the clinical relevance of hypervascularity. Eight healthy volunteers and 22 patients with symptoms and signs of knee arthritis were studied. Presence or absence of hypervascularity, synovial thickening, effusion, and Baker's cysts were recorded. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) in breast cancer using indigo carmine was started in January 1998, and this method has proved feasible and reliable. From our initial experience, sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) were identified in 65 of 88 cases of breast cancer (74%).

We sought to understand better the impact of genetic testing and counseling in a group of women who had early breast cancer (age <50) or ovarian cancer and a family history of cancer. Thirty-five women underwent genetic counseling and genetic testing for BRCA1/2 at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Hereditary Cancer Clinic. Apoptosis is widely recognized as a major phenomenon in normal development. Deficiencies in this process may lead to developmental abnormalities such as congenital subglottic stenosis. We studied apoptosis using in situ end labeling of the 3'-OH ends of fragmented DNA in 5 progressively older, normal, human cricoid cartilage specimens. Results show that apoptosis is a very active process in fetal and neonatal tissue. The process gradually slows with advancing age. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether freezing episodes commonly occur in patients who have had a hemiparetic stroke.
DESIGN: A postal questionnaire sent to 108 patients who had been admitted to our Stroke Unit with a hemiparesis due to an acute ischaemic stroke or a primary intracerebral haemorrhage.
RESULTS: Ninety-three questionnaires were returned, of which 14 were unsuitable for analysis as the patients were unable to walk. The remaining 79 questionnaires were analysed (response rate 73%). Twenty-six (33%) patients reported freezing episodes while walking.

Ten patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for non-comorbid panic disorder or panic disorder with agoraphobia were treated in a 12-week open-label, flexible dosage trial of nefazodone. Dosages ranged from 50 to 400 mg per day. Clinical assessment utilized several recently developed scales of panic disorder severity, as well as the clinical global impression scale. Three-month-old male rats were subjected 3 times weekly for 1 h to eccentric exercise of one triceps surae muscle (30 stimulations/min) under general anesthesia in order to induce Achilles tendon disorder corresponding to paratenonitis and tendinosis in man.
