Prevalence of Malassezia species in patients with pityriasis versicolor in Rosario, Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia species are considered opportunistic yeasts of increasing clinical importance. These lipophilic yeasts are associated with various human diseases, especially pityriasis versicolor (PV), a chronic superficial scaling dermatomycosis. AIMS: The aim of this study was to isolate, identify and analyze the distribution of the different species of Malassezia in patients with PV in Rosario city (Argentina). METHODS: A total of 264 clinical samples were studied. Isolates were identified on the basis of microscopic observation of cells, and physiological properties, such as the p…

A case of Pityriasis rosea concurrent with the novel influenza A (H1N1) infection.

Pityriasis rosea is a common skin disease with a self-limiting course. Multiple etiologies including viruses, bacteria, and fungi have been investigated in an attempt to confirm a casual association. Pityriasis rosea has not been associated with influenza virus, but has been associated with herpes simplex virus types 6 and 7. We encountered a case of a proven pandemic H1N1 infection associated with a clincopathological diagnosis of pityriasis rosea. We conclude that influenza A (H1N1) virus could either be a primary cause of pityriasis rosea or a trigger for reactivation of other viral causes.

Prevalence of Malassezia species in pityriasis versicolor lesions in northeast Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia species normally colonize the skin but they can change their saprophytic state and invade the stratum corneum as pathogens. AIMS: To determine the prevalence of Malassezia species isolated from patients with pityriasis versicolor (PV) and to analyse their distribution according to the location of the lesion on the body. METHODS: This study included 218 patients with PV and positive Malassezia cultures who resided in the city of Resistencia, a subtropical area located in northeast Argentina. Age, gender, and the body site of lesions were recorded. Strains were identifie…

Clinical improvement of pityriasis rubra pilaris with efalizumab in a pediatric patient.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris has no single effective therapy and there are some cases resistant to multiple treatments. Psoriasis has clinical and therapeutic response overlaps with pityriasis rubra pilaris and there are several therapies common to both, such as retinoids, methotrexate, cyclosporine A, phototherapy, and most recently infliximab. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy with pityriasis rubra pilaris unresponsive to topical corticosteroids, salicylic acid, pimecrolimus, calcitriol, calcipotriol, ultraviolet B targeted phototherapy, isotretinoin, systemic PUVA, acitretin, and etanercept…

Comparative study of oral and topical ketoconazole therapy in pityriasis versicolor.

INTRODUCTION: Both topical and systemic ketoconazole are reported to be effective against pityriasis versicolor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients suffering from pityriasis versicolor were treated either with oral ketoconazole 200 mg per day or 2% ketoconazole cream topically once daily for 2 weeks. RESULTS: On global assessment, after 2 weeks of start of therapy, 18 (90%) out of 20 patients treated with oral ketoconazole were cured while 2 patients had considerable residual disease. In the ketoconazole cream group, 16 (80%) out of 20 patients were cured and 4 patients had considerable re…

Three cases of pityriasis rubra pilaris successfully treated with cyclosporin A.

OBJECTIVES: In refractory inflammatory joint diseases (IJDs) biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) may achieve remission. EULAR recommends bDMARD tapering when remission persists. However, guidelines on tapering modalities and criteria for patient selection are lacking. We aimed to evaluate remission persistency after lengthening the time between injections of golimumab in patients affected by IJD and to identify any patient or disease characteristics associated to flare after lengthening. METHODS: Patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA)

Comparative study of topical terbinafine and topical ketoconazole in pityriasis versicolor.

Fifty patients suffering from pityriasis versicolor were treated with either 2% ketoconazole cream (25 patients) or 1% terbinafine cream (25 patients). Diagnosis was confirmed by microscopic potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination and either of the cream was applied once daily for a duration of 2 weeks. Global assessment was done at the end of treatment with mycological and clinical cure rate of 88% and 96% in ketoconazole and terbinafine treated groups respectively. After a follow up of 3 months the relapse in ketoconazole group was 13.53% and 8.33% in terbinafine group with no side effects.

Double-blind study with fenticonazole or bifonazole lotions in pityriasis versicolor.

The efficacy of fenticonazole 2% lotion was studied in patients suffering from pityriasis versicolor in a double-blind comparison with bifonazole 1% lotion, both applied once daily for three weeks. Forty-six patients were recruited and randomly allocated to one or other treatment group. Clinical and mycological examinations, performed at baseline and at weekly intervals, have shown an excellent response to both treatments. Two cases of mild transient desquamation were reported in the fenticonazole group. Fenticonazole 2% lotion appears active in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor and its e…

Pityriasis rotunda. A cutaneous sign of malignant disease in two patients.

The term pityriasis rotunda refers to strikingly circular scaly lesions, with the histologic appearance of ichthyosis vulgaris. Pityriasis rotunda has been described in the Japanese, South African blacks, and West Indian blacks. The condition occurs only in association with certain serious systemic illnesses, usually tuberculosis, or malignant neoplasms or less severe diseases of the female genital tract (eg, fibroids, ovarian cyst). We describe two South African blacks with pityriasis rotunda and neoplasms. The cutaneous lesions cleared when the primary neoplasm was treated.

Failure to detect immune complexes in the secondary stage of pityriasis rosea.

Thirty-three patients with pityriasis rosea were studied with regard to the possible presence of circulating and cutaneously deposited immune complexes. The levels of circulating immune complexes, determined by a solid-phase C1q-binding assay, were not different from those of healthy control individuals. The levels were similar in samples obtained during the initial and during the remission stages of the disease. Cutaneous deposits of immunoglobulin and/or complement were found in only 5 of 33 patients. This study does not support of concept that circulating immune complexes are important for …

Case clustering in pityriasis rosea: support for role of an infective agent.

One hundred and twenty-six cases of pityriasis rosea seen over two years in north Staffordshire were analysed for clustering in time and space. A statistically significant degree of clustering was found; this was evident among female patients considered separately but not among male patients. The incidence of the condition was higher in patients working in, or attending, educational establishments. These findings support the hypothesis that pityriasis rosea is caused by an infective agent. A search for an infective organism and a transmission mechanism now seems justifiable.

[Treatment of pityriasis alba with a combination of coal tar, diiodohydroxyquinolin and hydrocortisone].

Pityriasis Alba, a dermatosis whose significance is basically cosmetic, is extremely common and so benign that the majority of patients-dark skinned children and young people do not consult a physician. Nevertheless due to its high incidence and chronicity a large number of patients eventually seek relief. The various treatments currently employed based on a mistaken concept of its etiology are ineffective, though the dermatosis disappears spontaneously after some time. The use of cream containing 2% coal tar., 1% diiodohydroxyquinolin and 0.5% hydrocortisone applied 3 times a day for one mont…
