Yellow fever in Africa: public health impact and prospects for control in the 21st century.

In the last two decades, yellow fever re-emerged with vehemence to constitute a major public health problem in Africa. The disease has brought untold hardship and indescribable misery among different populations in Africa. It is one of Africa's stumbling blocks to economic and social development. Despite landmark achievements made in the understanding of the epidemiology of yellow fever disease and the availability of a safe and efficacious vaccine, yellow fever remains a major public health problem in both Africa and America where the disease affects annually an estimated 200,000 persons caus

A qualitative examination of the distribution strategies, access, and equitable uptake of the COVID-19 vaccines in Kenya: lessons for the next pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The WHO and international partners identified vaccination against the coronavirus as one of the important public health interventions in controlling Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) infections. The COVID-19 vaccine uptake was however low and characterized by inequitable distribution and access in Kenya. This study aimed to examine in depth the causes of inequity in vaccine uptake to inform the future rollout and successful uptake of new vaccines. METHODS: The study employed a qualitative approach involving in-depth key informant interviews with stakeholders across various aspects o

At a crossroads: confronting setbacks and advancing the 95-95-95 HIV targets in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains at the epicentre of the global HIV epidemic and faces a decisive moment in its journey toward achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress toward these targets in SSA, identifying key challenges, barriers to viral load suppression, and potential strategies to improve treatment adherence and health outcomes. These goals-ensuring that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed are receiving treatment, and 95% of those receiving treatment achieve VLS-represent a bold vision

Good practice in reaching and treating refugees in addiction care in Germany - a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Health and adequate access to health care are human rights. Refugees are at risk for substance abuse. Despite the known structural and personal risk factors for abuse, refugees in Germany continue to face barriers to adequate addiction prevention and care, which is a violation of the fundamental human right to health care. The question arises as to how barriers for refugees in reaching addiction services and care can be overcome. In the presented study, strategies for good practices to deconstruct these barriers were identified. METHOD: A total of 21 experts participated in a thre

Exhausted practical sovereignty and lateral agency: Non-uptake of treatment for hepatitis C in the antiviral era.

With the advent of highly effective antiviral treatment for hepatitis C, many people have undergone treatment and been cured. Others, however, have not undergone treatment, even where it is free and readily available. Australia's aim of eliminating the disease by 2030 means this group is of concern to researchers, health professionals and policymakers. This article draws on 50 interviews conducted for a research project on treatment experiences to examine treatment non-uptake in Australia. Informed by Berlant's (2007) work on 'slow death', it analyses experiences of non-uptake to explain the d

Malnutrition among under-five children in Democratic Republic of the Congo: A plague of the health system.

Malnutrition in children has been recognized as a major public health problem in the world and in particular in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which directly contributes to the increase in mortality and morbidity in this already fragile population. The Democratic Republic of Congo is a country plagued by repeated conflicts between different local armed groups and instability in the management of political affairs. There is a high prevalence of malnutrition in the eastern provinces of the country. Although it is a major public health problem, the inadequacy of the system in question plays an

Disrespect and abuse in maternity care: individual consequences of structural violence.

Disrespect and abuse of patients, especially birthing women, does occur in the health sector. This is a violation of women's fundamental human rights and can be viewed as a consequence of women's lives not being valued by larger social, economic and political structures. Here we demonstrate how such disrespect and abuse is enacted at an interpersonal level across the continuum of care in Tanzania. We describe how and why women's exposure to disrespect and abuse should be seen as a symptom of structural violence. Detailed narratives were developed based on interviews and observations of 14 rura

The power of collaboration: the untold story of World Blood Donor Day and World Patient Safety Day.

Global health days endorsed by the World Health Assembly (WHA) play a distinctive role in elevating priority issues, mobilizing political commitment, and catalyzing collective action. Among them, World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) and World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) stand out as landmark initiatives that emerged not only from technical necessity but also through sustained collaboration among Member States, WHO, and key partners including international organizations, professional bodies, civil society, and advocates. More than symbolic observances, they serve as governance instruments that confer leg

Disease profiles in the Indigenous Australian population are suggestive of a common complement control haplotype.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People (respectfully referred to as Indigenous Australians herein) are disparately burdened by many infectious and chronic diseases relative to Australians with European genetic ancestry. Some of these diseases are described in other populations to be influenced by the inherited profile of complement genes. These include complement factor B, H, I and complement factor H-related (CFHR) genes that can contribute to a polygenic complotype. Here the focus is on the combined deletion of CFHR1 and 3 to form a common haplotype (CFHR3-1Δ). The prevalence of CFHR3-

[Critical analysis of the low organ donation rates in Chile].

The highest organ donation rate in Chile was 10 donors per million population in 2017, which is low compared with other countries. Local experts attribute the low rate to population's lack of education and generosity, distrust in procurement/allocation system, inadequate legislation and insufficient encouraging campaigns, although without much empirical support: None of the countries from the OECD is also an organ donation leader. Latin Americans who migrate to Spain improve their donation rates, suggesting that the possible explanation is trust in the system where personalities do not have fa

Deadly heroin or the death of heroin -- overdoses caused by illicit drugs of abuse in Budapest, Hungary between 1994 and 2012.

Rates of illicit drug use and drug-related deaths have continuously increased in developed countries since the 1960s even though the patterns of use and thus the related mortality differ from region to region. In Europe heroin is the drug most often implicated in overdoses. The decedents are most often male, between 20 and 30 years of age and have a long history of drug use. According to the majority of available studies a concomitant use of alcohol and benzodiazepines is one of the risk factors of heroin overdose. In our study we have examined the basic demographic and toxicological features

[The influenza pandemic 1968-1970: crisis management in separated Germany - "Vodka and Raspberry Tea"].

The Hong Kong Flu in the years 1968-1970 challenged both German health care systems. This article intends to analyse the patterns of reaction to the pandemic. Both German states faced the threat according to their respective ideological orientation. This applied to the two parts of Berlin - West and East - as well. In the GDR the control of influenza was centrally organized. When the pandemic passed away an influenza guiding document ("Führungsdokument") was made obligatory for the fight against the plague. In the FRG hospital treatment maintained predominance while the outpatient sector was a
