Heterogeneity of ultrasonic wave properties in ex vivo cortical bone of racehorse.

Despite the prevalence of lower limb disease in racehorses, outdoor bone evaluation equipment is lacking. Consequently, a secure and cost-ef … ng clinical significance. Attenuation was more pronounced in core regions, suggesting a reliance on porosity. A correlation (R = 0.68, p < 0.001) was found between velocity and attenuation in dense regions, which may be attributable to the bone matrix properties.

A Solvent Selection Framework for Porous Organic Polymers.

Selecting suitable solvents to control the morphology and properties of novel functional materials remains a significant challenge, especially when there is limited or no prior knowledge of the material and its solubility. In this work, we present a solvent selection toolkit for functional porous organic polymers. We have developed the MLoc algorithm for the fast determination of Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) for novel materials. This approach requires ultraviolet and visible (UV/vis) absorbance data, measured for a number of candidate solvents using a standard laboratory setup. Based on

Enzyme-Induced Nanocavity Formation in Leaf-Shaped Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Functional Entrapment of Carbonic Anhydrase.

Immobilizing carbonic anhydrases for CO2 hydration holds great promise for efficient carbon capture. However, understanding how immobilization affects enzyme activity and host material structure is crucial for advancing this strategy. Here, we investigate the structural and functional consequences of entrapping Persephonella marina carbonic anhydrase (PmCA) within leaf-shaped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-L). Our results reveal that PmCA retains its activity - and, therefore, its structural integrity - after entrapment. Interestingly, while ZIF-L retains its crystallinity, the presence

Preparation of porous carbon derived from a lignin-based polymer through ZnCl2 activation for effective capture of iodine.

Lignin-based porous carbon, a derivative of lignin, is acknowledged for its cost-effectiveness, stability, and environmental sustainability. It exhibits significant adsorption capacity for the removal of heavy metals and in wastewater treatment, rendering it a highly esteemed adsorbent material. However, the potential of lignin-derived porous carbon for the capture of iodine in environmental contexts has yet to be thoroughly investigated. This research aims to examine the iodine capture capabilities of lignin-derived porous carbon in both iodine vapor and iodine/cyclohexane solution. Initially

Detection, transport, and retention of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts in saturated sandy porous media: Influence of electrolytes and natural organic matter in flow-through systems.

Understanding the transport and retention of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts through soils and into ground and surface water is essential for determining the risk this parasite poses to water resources and human health worldwide. We studied here how various naturally occurring groundwater solutions containing different types of organic compounds (fulvic and humic acids) and electrolytes (NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2) at different concentrations can affect the transport and retention of oocysts in engineered-saturated silica sand columns subjected to continuous flow to simulate the movement of groundwater thro

Bioinspired mycobacterial lipid coating of porous particles for enhanced antimicrobial efficacy.

The study aimed to investigate the unique lipid composition of Mycobacterium bovis BCG and its potential to enhance antimicrobial efficacy of lipid-coated mesoporous silica particles (MSPs). The bacterial lipids (BL) were extracted with petroleum ether and analyzed via LC-MS, revealing a complex mixture of phospholipids, including cardiolipin, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and triacylglycerols. Lipid coating (using bacterial lipids and lung surfactant DPPC as the main component) was performed on MSPs via vesicle fusion approach and confirmed with ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. MSPs we

Living Porous Ceramics for Bacteria-Regulated Gas Sensing and Carbon Capture.

Microorganisms hosted in abiotic structures have led to engineered living materials that can grow, sense, and adapt in ways that mimic biological systems. Although porous structures should favor colonization by microorganisms, they have not yet been exploited as abiotic scaffolds for the development of living materials. Here, porous ceramics are reported that are colonized by bacteria to form an engineered living material with self-regulated and genetically programmable carbon capture and gas-sensing functionalities. The carbon capture capability is achieved using wild-type photosynthetic cyan

Preparation of alkyl microporous organic network-based capillary column for an efficient gas chromatographic separation of position isomers.

The large surface area, excellent thermal stability and easy modification make microporous organic networks (MONs) good candidates in the field of gas chromatography (GC). Due to the limited species and highly conjugated networks of MONs, their applications are still in infancy and restricted. To accelerate their developments and to enrich their types in GC, here we report the first example of synthesizing alkyl MON and its capillary column for GC separation of position isomers. Linear 1,8-dibromooctane is used as the alkyl monomer instead of traditional aromatic ones to construct novel alkyl

Highly Efficient Separation of Ethanol Amines and Cyanides via Ionic Magnetic Mesoporous Nanomaterials.

Simple and efficient sample pretreatment methods are important for analysis and detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) in environmental and biological samples. Despite many commercial materials or reagents that have been already applied in sample preparation, such as SPE columns, few materials with specificity have been utilized for purification or enrichment. In this study, ionic magnetic mesoporous nanomaterials such as poly(4-VB)@M-MSNs (magnetic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles modified by 4-vinyl benzene sulfonic acid) and Co2+@M-MSNs (magnetic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles modifi

Natural-derived porous nanocarriers for the delivery of essential oils.

Essential oils (EOs) are natural, volatile substances derived from aromatic plants. They exhibit multiple pharmacological effects, including antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, with broad application prospects in health care, food, and agriculture. However, the instability of volatile components, which are susceptible to deterioration under light, heat, and oxygen exposure, as well as limited water solubility, have significantly impeded the development and application of EOs. Porous nanoclays are natural clay minerals with a layered structure. They possess

Adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water with porous organic polymers.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made environmental contaminants causing increasing global concern due to their adverse effect on environmental and human health. Conventional treatment methods are ineffective in removing short-chain PFAS because they are persistent and recalcitrant to treatment. This study evaluated the performance of a structurally-tunable and chemically-stable porous organic polymer (POP) for PFAS removal under realistic environmental conditions. The POP demonstrated an exceptionally high removal efficiency (>95%) within 15 min when the initial PFAS concent

Chopped fibers and nano-hydroxyapatite enhanced silk fibroin porous hybrid scaffolds for bone augmentation.

Chopped fiber (CF)- and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA)-enhanced silk fibroin (SF) porous hybrid scaffolds (SHCF) were prepared by freeze-drying for bone augmentation. Compared with pristine SF scaffolds, the incorporation of CF and n-HA can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite scaffold. The results of cell experiments and mouse subcutaneous implantation indicated that the SHCF could alleviate foreign body reactions (FBR) led by macrophages and neutrophils, promote the polarization of RAW264.7 cells to anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages, and inhibit the secretion of pro-in

Preparation and characterization of different micro/nano structures on the surface of bredigite scaffolds.

The preparation of controllable micro/nano structures on the surface of the bredigite scaffold is expected to exhibit the same support and osteoconductive capabilities as living bone. However, the hydrophobicity of the white calciμm silicate scaffold surface restricts the adhesion and spreading of osteoblasts. Furthermore, during the degradation process of the bredigite scaffold, the release of Ca2+ results in an alkaline environment around the scaffold, which inhibits the growth of osteoblasts. In this study, the three-dimensional geometry of the Primitive surface in the three-periodic minima

Phosphorus-Enhanced and Calcium-Retarded Transport of Ferrihydrite Colloid: Mechanism of Electrostatic Potential Changes Regulated via Adsorption Speciation.

The transport of ferrihydrite colloid (FHC) through porous media is influenced by anions (e.g., PO43-) and cations (e.g., Ca2+) in the aqueous environment. This study investigated the cotransport of FHC with P and P/Ca in saturated sand columns. The results showed that P adsorption enhanced FHC transport, whereas Ca loaded onto P-FHC retarded FHC transport. Phosphate adsorption provided a negative potential on the FHC, while Ca added to P-FHC led to electrostatic screening, compression of the electric double layer, and formation of Ca5(PO4)3OH followed by heteroaggregation at pH ≥ 6.0. The mon

Additively manufactured controlled porous orthopedic joint replacement designs to reduce bone stress shielding: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Total joint replacements are an established treatment for patients suffering from reduced mobility and pain due to severe joint damage. Aseptic loosening due to stress shielding is currently one of the main reasons for revision surgery. As this phenomenon is related to a mismatch in mechanical properties between implant and bone, stiffness reduction of implants has been of major interest in new implant designs. Facilitated by modern additive manufacturing technologies, the introduction of porosity into implant materials has been shown to enable significant stiffness reduction; howe…

Absorption rate governs cell transduction in dry macroporous scaffolds.

Developing the next generation of cellular therapies will depend on fast, versatile, and efficient cellular reprogramming. Novel biomaterials will play a central role in this process by providing scaffolding and bioactive signals that shape cell fate and function. Previously, our lab reported that dry macroporous alginate scaffolds mediate retroviral transduction of primary T cells with efficiencies that rival the gold-standard clinical spinoculation procedures, which involve centrifugation on Retronectin-coated plates. This scaffold transduction required the scaffolds to be both macroporous a

Establishment of physiologically relevant oxygen gradients in microfluidic organ chips.

In vitro models of human organs must accurately reconstitute oxygen concentrations and gradients that are observed in vivo to mimic gene expression, metabolism, and host-microbiome interactions. Here we describe a simple strategy to achieve physiologically relevant oxygen tension in a two-channel human small intestine-on-a-chip (Intestine Chip) lined with primary human duodenal epithelium and intestinal microvascular endothelium in parallel channels separated by a porous membrane while both channels are perfused with oxygenated medium. This strategy was developed using computer simulations tha

Peritoneal Pre-conditioning Method for In Vivo Vascular Graft Maturation Utilizing a Porous Pouch.

Tissue-engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) require strategies to allow graft remodeling but avoid stenosis and loss of graft mechanics. A variety of promising biomaterials and methods to incorporate cells have been tested, but intimal hyperplasia and graft thrombosis are still concerning when grafting in small-diameter arteries. Here, we describe a strategy using the peritoneal cavity as an "in vivo" bioreactor to recruit autologous cells to electrospun conduits, which can improve the in vivo response after aortic grafting. We focus on the methods for a novel hydrogel pouch design to enclose th
