This article contains processed data related to the research published in "Fermentation in nutrient salt mixtures affects green Spanish-style Manzanilla table olives" [1]. It displays information on the salt substitution by other nutrient salts (potassium chloride and calcium chloride) during fermentation of green Spanish-style Manzanilla table olives to produce healthier products. Particularly, it studies the relationship between the different colour parameters (L*, a*, b* and C i), firmness, and sensory attributes (saltiness, bitterness, hardness, and fibrousness), and the composition of the…

We here report a novel mutation of the thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter (TSC) (SLC12A3) gene in a Japanese patient with Gitelman's syndrome (GS). GS is characterized by a renal disorder and is associated with hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, metabolic alkalosis and hypocalciuria arising from the defective tubular reabsorption of magnesium and potassium. This disease is reportedly caused by mutations in the TSC gene. A 52-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of sleeplessness and tinnitus. He exhibited hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalciuria, metabolic alkalosis and hyperrenine

Exercise-induced loss of skeletal muscle K(+) can seriously impede muscle performance through membrane depolarization. Thus far, it has been assumed that the negative equilibrium potential and large membrane conductance of Cl(-) attenuate the loss of force during hyperkalaemia. We questioned this idea because there is some evidence that Cl(-) itself can exert a depolarizing influence on membrane potential (V(m)). With this study we tried to identify the possible roles played by Cl(-) during hyperkalaemia. Isolated rat soleus muscles were kept at 25 degrees C and twitch contractions were evoked

The effect of a commercial acidifying diet on acid-base-balance and urinary mineral concentration was compared in five healthy cats and five cats with urethral obstruction for six days after the removal of lower urinary tract obstruction. There were no significant differences in urine pH throughout the experiment between the groups. Blood pH was decreased in obstructed animals at the time of presentation at the clinic, but thereafter it did not differ from data from healthy cats on the same diet. The concentration of phosphorus and potassium in urine decreased, sodium and chloride did not chan

Triphenyl(2,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)phosphonium chloride is formed in solvent-free form by the reaction under anhydrous conditions between triphenylphosphane and 2,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl chloride, but when it is crystallized from a mixture of ethyl acetate and chloroform in the presence of air it forms a stoichiometric monohydrate, C28H28O3P(+)·Cl(-)·H2O, (I). The reactions between the anhydrous phosphonium salt and alkoxy-substituted benzaldehydes, using Wittig reactions in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide, provide a series of multiply substituted stilbenes, most of which were assigned the

The article brings a description of a patient case when an application of mineral balanced infusion solutions led to a disruption of inner environment, beginning of a combined failure of the acid-base balance with a serious metabolic acidosis. Patient J. was artificially respirated after a CPR. During the therapy the patient was given basically without any changes a combination of mineral solution Plasma-Lyte 148, amino-acid and 20% glucose. During 8 days a serious metabolic alkalosis had developed (caused by a lack of chlorides, phosphates and other reasons), combined with respirational acido

A new passive particle collector (inert surrogate surface) that collects particles from all directions has been developed. It was used to measure particle deposition at 35 test sites as part of a project that examined corrosion of materials in order that variation in particulate material could be used in development of dose-response functions in a modern multi-pollutant environment. The project, MULTI-ASSESS, was funded by the EU to examine the effects of air pollution on cultural heritage. Passive samplers were mounted rain-protected, and both in wind-protected and wind-exposed positions, to

In vitro studies under short-circuited conditions suggest that amiloride, a diuretic agent which is thought to block apical membrane sodium entry, has significant effects on sodium absorption by the human colon. To evaluate this in vivo, we studied the effect of amiloride applied in concentrations of 10(-5) and 10(-4) M on sodium transport and potential difference (PD) in human colon during steady-state perfusion. Net sodium absorption was reduced 25% by amiloride and chloride absorption by 15%; potassium and bicarbonate secretion rates were enhanced. In other studies the colon was divided int

To determine the effect of corticosteroids on active transport processes, unidirectional fluxes of 22Na, 36Cl, and 42K were measured under short-circuit conditions across isolated stripped distal colonic mucosa of the rat in control, secondary hyperaldosterone, and dexamethasone-treated animals. In controls net sodium and chloride fluxes (JNanet and JClnet) and short-circuit current (Isc) were 6.6 +/- 2.2, 7.6 +/- 1.6, and 1.3 +/- 0.2 mu eq X h-1 X cm-2, respectively. Although aldosterone increased Isc to 7.3 +/- 0.5 mu eq X h-1 X cm-2, JNanet (6.9 +/- 0.7 mu eq X h-1 X cm-2) was not altered a

Immobilized l-glutamic acid β-methyl ester was sulfonylated with 4-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride and alkylated with various α-haloketones. The resulting sulfonamides were reacted with potassium trimethylsilanolate. Then, upon cleavage from the polymer support, tetrasubstituted pyridines were produced as the result of one-step C-arylation, aldol condensation, and oxidation. When cleavage from the resin occurred before the trimethylsilanolate treatment, C-arylation was followed by enamination, which yielded trisubstituted pyrazines. Through the developed protocols, targeted synthesis of novel he

Bartter's syndrome (BS) is a rare group of hereditary salt losing tubulopathies due to impairment of renal transport mechanism. Herein, we report a boy in early childhood who was diagnosed to have infantile Bartter's syndrome. Laboratory investigations revealed hypokalaemia and metabolic alkalosis which was managed with oral potassium chloride supplementation. The inner ear showed no anatomical abnormalities. Sequential cochlear implantation was performed 4 months apart. Postoperative electrical stimulation yielded good response and a symmetric mapping. The patient was on regular audio-verbal …

Effects of stannous chloride (SnCl2, 30-100 microM) on presynaptic currents recorded from frog neuromuscular junctions were investigated to confirm that increased calcium entry is involved in SnCl2-induced facilitation of the evoked transmitter release. After the potassium channel was blocked by tetraethylammonium (0.1 mM) and 3,4-diaminopyridine (10 microM), SnCl2 (0.1 mM) augmented the prolonged positive deflection of the presynaptic action potential ascribable to calcium inward current, which was thereafter suppressed by the addition of cadmium (0.1 mM). These results suggest that SnCl2 enh

Calcium-activated potassium channels are attractive targets for the development of therapeutics for overactive bladder. In the current study, we addressed the role of calcium-activated potassium channels of small (SK; K(Ca)2) and intermediate (IK; K(Ca)3) conductance in bladder function pharmacologically. We identified and characterized a novel positive modulator of SK/IK channels, 4,5-dichloro-1,3-diethyl-1,3-dihydro-benzoimidazol-2-one (NS4591). In whole-cell patch-clamp experiments, NS4591 doubled IK-mediated currents at a concentration of 45 +/- 6 nM(n = 16), whereas 530 +/- 100 nM (n = 7)
