Eight weeks of oral iron supplementation improves postural control in young women with iron deficiency anemia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of 8-week oral supplementation on postural control in young women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). METHODS: This study involved 15 women with IDA who received 160 mg of elemental iron daily in the form of dried ferrous sulfate capsules (80 mg twice daily) taken in two divided doses for 8 weeks. The mean velocity of oscillations of the center of pressure (CoPv) was recorded to evaluate postural control pre- and post-supplementation. In addition, simple reaction time (SRT) and weight discrimination tests were performed to assess attentional ca

Ketolysis is required for the proper development and function of the somatosensory nervous system.

Ketogenic diets are emerging as protective interventions in preclinical and clinical models of somatosensory nervous system disorders. Additionally, dysregulation of succinyl-CoA 3-oxoacid CoA-transferase 1 (SCOT, encoded by Oxct1), the fate-committing enzyme in mitochondrial ketolysis, has recently been described in Friedreich's ataxia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, the contribution of ketone metabolism in the normal development and function of the somatosensory nervous system remains poorly characterized. We generated sensory neuron-specific, Advillin-Cre knockout of SCOT (Adv-K

Position Sense Deficits at the Lower Limbs in Early Multiple Sclerosis: Clinical and Neural Correlates.

Background/Objective. Position sense, defined as the ability to identify joint and limb position in space, is crucial for balance and gait b … t the lower limbs that, nevertheless, affected standing balance. Functional changes allowed correct proprioception processing during the ipsilateral matching task but not during the more demanding bilateral task, possibly because of damage to the CC. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying disability in MS and could influence the desig …

Interrogating cortical representations in elite athletes with persistent posterior thigh pain - New targets for intervention?

OBJECTIVES: Hamstring injuries in athletes can lead to significant time away from competition as a result of persistent posterior thigh pain. These cases are often difficult to treat as the state of the tissues alone cannot explain symptoms. In non-athletic populations with persistent pain, disruptions to tactile, proprioceptive, and spatial cortical representations exist, which has led to promising brain-based treatments. Here, we explored whether athletes with persistent posterior thigh pain also display impairments in these cortical representations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS:

Awareness of Dystonic Posture in Patients With Cervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is a focal dystonia characterized by sensorimotor integration abnormalities and proprioceptive dysfunction. Since proprioception is essential for bodily awareness, we hypothesized that CD patients may have an impairment in dystonic posture awareness. More information on this issue could be useful to better understand whether dystonic posture affects bodily perception in CD and could help in the development of specific rehabilitation strategies based on proprioceptive input manipulation to restore bodily awareness. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to inve…

Does exercise-induced muscle damage impair subsequent motor skill learning?

Motor skill learning is a fundamental aspect of human behavior based on the calibration of internal models via sensory information such as proprioception. Some conditions, as exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), disrupt proprioceptive information, and may cause learning impairment. Such possible relation between EIMD and motor skill learning has not yet been investigated and it is the aim of this study. For this purpose, thirty male university students (19.3 ± 1.8 years) were equally assigned to two groups: EIMD and CON group. The EIMD group received a treatment to induce muscle damage consi…

Frequency coherence analysis of postural balance in able-bodied and in non-treated adolescent idiopathic scoliotic girls.

BACKGROUND: This study test if the frequency coherence calculated for the overall, low and high frequency bandwidths of the center of pressu … prioceptive information (free-moment). Scoliotic girls adopted an adaptive modality mostly based on proprioception information to maintain their standing balance. INTERPRETATION: Scoliotic girls systematically depend on the free-moment to modulate their antero-posterior center of pressure displacements. These results suggest a postural reeducation program aimed …

The effects of repetitive haemarthrosis on postural balance in children with haemophilia.

Sensory information from visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems is necessary to control posture and balance. Impairment in proprioception due to repetitive joints bleeding may lead to a deficit in postural balance which, in turn, leads to high joint stress and risk of bleeding recurrence. Despite the increase in attention in this field during the past few years, the data concerning to how bleeds can affect postural control in children with haemophilia (CWH) remain scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the postural balance in CWH. Twenty CWH Haemophilia Group (HG) and 20 age-matched child…

Propriospinal transmission of part of the corticospinal excitation in humans.

In humans a substantial part of corticospinal excitation to upper limb motoneurons is mediated through cervical premotoneurons located rostral to motoneurons, analogous to the feline system of C3-C4 propriospinal neurons. The indirect (disynaptic) component of the corticospinal command passing through the propriospinal relay may be updated by the extensive convergence at this level of afferent inputs (both excitatory and inhibitory) from the moving limb. Propriospinal neurons are potently inhibited by feedback inhibitory interneurons facilitated from the motor cortex, and this explains why art

Human tilt perception in a dynamic environment.

This study examines the perception of tilt and linear acceleration as sensed through the utricular otolith of the vestibular system. Any sensation derived from the otolith is a consequence of the displacement of the otolith parallel to its own plane. This leads, naturally, to the definition of a sensation plane. A model is presented which defines this sensation plane. It assumes that the sacular otolith contribution is negligible, an assumption substantiated by correlation with experimental data by Schöne. Applying this model to perceived pitch angle, a simple equation is presented which relat

Expanding the Clinical Spectrum of PIEZO2 Duplications: A Case of Global Motor Delay, Congenital Sensory Neuropathy, and Musculoskeletal Abnormalities.

PIEZO2 encodes a mechanosensitive ion channel essential for touch perception, proprioception, and interoception, with biallelic loss-of-function variants known to cause a recessive mechanosensory neuropathy characterized by hypotonia and skeletal abnormalities; however, intragenic duplications have rarely been reported. We present a nine-year-old male with global motor delay, congenital hypotonia, distal muscle weakness, sensory neuropathy, thoracolumbar neuromuscular scoliosis, and multiple orthopedic abnormalities, along with microcephaly, cryptorchidism, chronic urinary incontinence, and ea…

Sensory incongruence leading to hand disownership modulates somatosensory cortical processing.

The sense of body ownership is based on integration of multimodal sensory information, including tactile sensation, proprioception, and vision. Distorted body ownership contributes to the development of chronic pain syndromes and possibly symptoms of psychiatric disease. However, the effects of disownership on cortical processing of somatosensory information are unknown. In the present study, we created a "disownership" condition in healthy individuals by manipulating the visual information indicating the location of the subject's own left hand using a mirror box and examined the influence of …

Do hypermobile subjects without pain have alteration to the feedback mechanisms controlling the shoulder girdle?

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that hypermobile subjects have proprioceptive deficits. However, it remains unclear whether pain-free subjects with hypermobility also have deficits. METHODS: Ten subjects with hypermobility and nine without hypermobility were recruited following ethical approval and informed consent. Shoulder mobility, joint position sense (JPS) and a reflex of trapezius evoked from arm afferents were compared. RESULTS: There was greater shoulder mobility in the hypermobile group (p = 0.004). There were no differences in shoulder JPS between the groups (p = 0.27), although,

[Pseudoballism secondary to spinal trauma].

INTRODUCTION: Ballism is a rare movement disorder that presents with violent and wide amplitude flinging movements of the limbs, mainly caused by injury in the contralateral subthalamic nucleus or its afferent or efferent connections. CLINICAL CASE: We describe the case of a 50-year old male who had ballistic movements after a cervical trauma. He subsequently developed choreoathetoid movements and a distonic attitude in the left upper limb later. A C2-C3 sensory level and proprioceptive loss in this limb were the main findings in the examination. The cervical magnetic resonance showed a trans

Nitric oxide modulates presynaptic afferent depolarization of mechanosensory neurons.

In crayfish, movement of the tailfan causes stimulation of exteroceptive sensory hairs located on its surface. Movement is monitored by a proprioceptor, the protopodite-endopodite chordotonal organ within the tailfan. Proprioceptive afferents provide indirect presynaptic inhibitory inputs to sensory hair afferents in the form of primary afferent depolarizations (PADs). Bath application of nitric oxide (NO) substrates, donors and scavengers, and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors had no effect on the responses of proprioceptive afferents during imposed movements of the chordotonal organ. Event-related potentials elicited by passive movements in humans: characterization, source analysis, and comparison to fMRI.

Cortical areas responsive to proprioceptive stimulation were assessed by ERP technique in normals and in selected patients with stroke and were compared to fMRI data. Repetitive extension of right and left forefinger elicited a P1/N1/P2 complex wave pattern. This pattern was absent in patient with complete sensory loss and present but spatially modified in patient with recovered sensory deficit. Source localization with a simple model showed three sources starting in the contralateral rolandic area (SI), then involving the inferior parietal lobe unilaterally and the supplementary motor area (1

The role of pallidum in the neural integrator model of cervical dystonia.

Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder affecting three million people worldwide. Cervical dystonia is the most common form of dystonia. Despite common prevalence the pathophysiology of cervical dystonia is unclear. Traditional view is that basal ganglia is involved in pathophysiology of cervical dystonia, while contemporary theories suggested the role of cerebellum and proprioception in the pathophysiology of cervical dystonia. It was recently proposed that the cervical dystonia is due to malfunctioning of the head neural integrator - the neuron network that normally converts head…
