BACKGROUND: No previous studies have compared the effectiveness of different modalities of psychotherapeutic treatment, as defined by different settings and durations, for patients with cluster C personality disorders. The aim of this multicentre study was to compare the effectiveness of 5 treatment modalities for patients with cluster C personality disorders in terms of psychiatric symptoms, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life. The following treatment modalities were compared: long-term outpatient (more than 6 months), short-term day hospital (up to 6 months), long-term day hospital…

Psychosocial stress leads to a release of cortisol. While this psychoneuroendocrine response helps to maintain physiological as well as psychological equilibrium under stress, exaggerated secretion of cortisol has been shown to have negative effects on somatic health and cognitive functioning. The study set out to examine the long-term effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management training on cortisol stress responses in healthy men and women. Eighty-three healthy subjects were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) training or a control condition. Four months a

BACKGROUND: Providing high-quality psychosocial care to parents and other primary caregivers of children with cancer (henceforth referred to as caregivers) is important, given the numerous challenges associated with a pediatric cancer diagnosis and the increased risk for negative psychosocial sequelae among caregivers. The Electronic Surviving Cancer Competently Intervention Program (eSCCIP) is a psychosocial eHealth intervention for caregivers, developed using an iterative, user-centered process.
METHOD: eSCCIP was tested in a single-arm pilot trial at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware (

OBJECTIVE: At first hospitalization, a long duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) predicts illness severity and worse treatment outcomes. The mechanism of this association, however, remains unclear. It has been hypothesized that lengthy untreated psychosis is toxic or that it reflects a more severe form of schizophrenia. Alternatively, the association may be an artifact of lead-time bias. These hypotheses are tested in a longitudinal study of schizophrenia with 2,137 observations spanning from childhood to 20 years after first admission.
METHODS: Data were from the Suffolk County Mental Healt

Alopecia areata (AA) may impair occupational functioning through psychosocial distress, disease visibility, concerns regarding hair-prosthesis displacement, and unwanted disclosure. Importantly, occupational impairment may not parallel the extent of visible hair loss. Workplace accommodations can reduce barriers to employment, but dermatologists may face uncertainty regarding when accommodation is appropriate, what information to provide employers, and how to balance immediate support with long-term adaptation. We propose a practical five-step framework for evaluating workplace accommodation r

OBJECTIVES: Rates of emotional and behavioural problems (EBP) in adolescence are high and rising, increasing pressure on psychosocial care systems. Professionals working in these systems have excellent insights in the measures needed. Of these, the most urgent and implementable ones have already been elucidated. Our current aim was to identify measures and interventions to improve psychosocial care for adolescents with EBP that professionals perceived as highly urgent but not yet feasible to implement, revealing potential barriers for implementation.
METHODS: We used Concept mapping, a partic

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have detailed that patients with pancreatitis frequently experience comorbid anxiety and depression, which may arise from physiological factors or psychosocial influences, and these conditions adversely affect daily functioning and quality of life. However, there is still a lack of reviews on epidemiological and mechanistic studies of anxiety and depression in patients with pancreatitis.
SUMMARY: Patients with pancreatitis commonly present with comorbid anxiety and depression, with chronic pancreatitis patients being more susceptible than those with acute pancreat

Personality disorder and personality pathology encompass a dimension of psychological dysfunction known to severely impact multiple domains of functioning. However, there is a notable dearth of research regarding both the pervasiveness and correlates of personality pathology among young sexual minority males who themselves experience heightened mental health burdens. Using the self-report version of the Standardized Assessment of Personality-Abbreviated Scale we tested associations between distinct personality characteristics with sociodemographic and psychosocial factors as well as mental hea

Forty-three children between the ages of 6 and 13 years with congenital facial anomalies underwent psychosocial evaluation prior to surgery. Also evaluated were healthy children matched to the craniofacial subjects by sex, age, intelligence, and economic background. Relative to this comparison group, the craniofacial children were found to have poorer self-concept, greater anxiety at the time of evaluation, and more introversion. Parents of the craniofacial children noted more frequent negative social encounters for their children and more hyperactive behavior at home. Teachers reported more p

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence explored symptom burden of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and its complex etiology involving psychosocial aspects. Child abuse has been linked to numerous psychopathologies including somatic symptoms as well as impaired personality functioning and disruptions in epistemic trust. This work aims to investigate personality functioning and epistemic trust in the association between child abuse and somatic symptom burden.
METHODS: We conducted structural equation modelling (SEM) using representative data of the German population (N = 2436). Personality functi

Adjuvant treatment with interferon-α (IFN-α) for patients with malignant melanoma can improve relapse-free and overall survival, but IFN-associated side effects may reduce patient's quality of life. The aim of the study was to prospectively evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with melanoma before and during Low-Dose IFN-α therapy. In a prospective multicenter trial conducted by the Dermatologic Cooperative Oncology Group, 850 patients with cutaneous stage II malignant melanoma received a standard Low-Dose of IFN-α-2a. OBJECTIVES: Persistently impaired psychosocial functioning has been recognized in many individuals with bipolar disorder. However, existing measures of functional disability have been adapted for use in bipolar disorder based mainly on those developed for use in other conditions. The present study involved the development and validation of a new patient self-report measure specific to bipolar disorder, the Bipolar Functional Status Questionnaire (BFSQ).
METHODS: Relevant constructs were identified, evaluated, and refined through an expert advisory panel in conjunction with patient interviews.…

BACKGROUND: Admission to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a significant event with potential long-term effects on family dynamics. Although Post-Intensive Care Syndrome in paediatrics (PICS-p) is well recognised, the effects of PICU admission on family functioning are not well understood.
AIMS: This study sought to characterise family functioning in a cohort from the PICU following discharge and to investigate the impact of PICS-p sequelae on family dynamics.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a caregiver-reported cross-sectional survey of a single-centre cohort in Brisbane, Australia. Car

BACKGROUND: Evidence and awareness of the importance of culturally adapting psychosocial interventions is growing. The aim of this paper is to systematically review studies on cultural adaptations of psychosocial interventions for parents and their children with intellectual disabilities, in low- and middle-income countries.
METHODS: Studies were identified through electronic databases and searching bibliographies. The quality and cultural adaptations of thirteen studies focusing on parental trainings were analysed using standardised tools and frameworks.
RESULTS: Findings suggest interventi

Objectives: Although males and females gain comparable weight when prescribed second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs), males may be uniquely vulnerable to an array of endocrinological, inflammatory, and psychosocial adverse drug effects. Methods: This opinion piece reviews work in each of these three areas for consideration. Results: Androgens may decrease both through hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis dysregulation and as a consequence of increased adiposity. Testosterone has anti-inflammatory properties, and declining levels as well as many other factors may influence overall immunological
