Rabbits were orally infected with Taenia pisiformis eggs and then serially killed. The development and regression of focal granulomatous lesions in the liver were observed, and these lesions were considered to be identical with the lesions in the naturally occurring disease. Focal granulomatous lesions containing onchospheres were also observed in the lungs, mesentery, and mesenteric lymph node. Thrombosis was present in some pulmonary arteries, and infarction of the lung was observed in 1 rabbit.

A patient is reported in whom rupture of the posterior papillary muscle of the left ventricle occurred following myocardial infarction. The intractable pulmonary oedema that followed responded to the combined surgical approach of mitral valve replacement, resection of the akinetic area of the left ventricular wall, and saphenous vein aortocoronary bypass. This combination of surgical procedures has not been reported to date, and was considered to have preserved adequate left ventricular performance.

INTRODUCTION: and importance: COVID-19 has been associated with thrombotic events in a variety of organs and systems, with pulmonary embolism being the most prevalent. Splenic infarction, renal infarction, and intestinal ischemia have all been documented recently as abdominal visceral infarctions.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59 years old female patient with a history of COVID-19 disease was admitted to our hospital due to her left upper quadrant abdominal and left flank pain. She had a history of left heel color change in few days. We perform an ultrasound and it was shown vein thrombosis. So, hepar

INTRODUCTION: According to the convincing evidence, a decline in mortality rate has been achieved with beta-blockers in patients with an acute myocardial infarction and in post-infarction follow-up. In fact, there has been a clear reduction of sudden coronary death. The necessary condition for the efficiency of beta-blockers is an early use. They are also a medication of choice for angina after an infarction. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of beta-blockers after a myocardial infarction in various clinical states and to eliminate doubts concerning their prescription.

Thirty-eight patients with a wide variety of different disorders of the lung have been imaged using magnetic resonance. The disorders studied include congenital abnormalities, acute and chronic inflammation, vascular disorders, primary and secondary tumours of the lung, haematomas and infarcts. Magnetic resonance imaging identified all lesions seen on chest radiographs, but it is not quite as sensitive as computed tomography is for detection of very small abnormalities. Magnetic resonance may provide information to aid in differentiation of a wide variety of disorders causing diffuse pulmonary

Scimitar syndrome is a rare condition characterized by partial or complete anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the lung to the inferior vena cava, right lung hypoplasia and dextroposition of the heart. Haemoptysis is uncommon in adults, although the clinical spectrum is wide. We report a case of a 38-year-old male with scimitar syndrome who had low grade haemoptysis persisting over several years secondary to bronchiectatic changes in his hypoplastic right lung. Conservative measures to manage haemoptysis were unsuccessful and the patient proceeded to bronchial artery embolization. The post-

Any insult to the central nervous system can lead to the rare occurrence of neurogenic pulmonary oedema (NPO). It is usually associated with significant neurological injury (eg, subarachnoid haemorrhage or traumatic brain injury) with a relatively rapid onset. As an exception to this observation, we report a middle-aged woman who developed NPO 72 hours after the onset of a subtle but evolving right middle cerebral artery infarction confirmed on CT. Aggressive use of diuretics and vasodilators, as is normally the case for cardiogenic pulmonary oedema, can compromise cerebral blood flow and the

Carcinomas of the bronchi often infiltrate veins, particularly in advanced stages. Tumor propagation in pulmonary veins with intra-atrial extension has been reported. Systemic arterial tumor embolism is a potentially fatal hazard that is caused by surgery or it can be the initial manifestation of a bronchogenic carcinoma. The importance of early pulmonary venous ligation in lung cancer surgery, first stressed by Aylwin in 1951, is evident, particularly when intravenous tumor progression has been diagnosed preoperatively by echocardiography or CT scan. We report a case of lethal hemispheric bra

Aspergillus can cause a wide spectrum of pulmonary complications. It may colonize pre-existing cavities to form mycetomas. In asthmatic patients it may lead to a hypersensitivity reaction involving eosinophilic infiltration of the bronchial wall and mucoid impaction (a condition called allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis) or granulomatous inflammation (bronchocentric granulomatosis). In the immunocompromised host, Aspergillus may invade blood vessels, causing hemorrhagic infarction (angioinvasive aspergillosis), or it may cause tracheobronchitis, bronchiolitis or pneumonia (airway invasive

The authors report a case of an anomalous left coronary artery discovered by chance in a totally asymptomatic 39 year old man. Appearances of anterior myocardial infarction were observed on routine preoperative ECG in a man with multiple injuries. Coronary angiography showed an anomalous left coronary artery arising from the main pulmonary artery. Left ventricular function was poor with associated mitral regurgitation. Surgical correction consisted in an end-to-end venous graft between the ostium of the coronary artery detached from the pulmonary artery and the right anterior border of the asc

In Europe, zoonotic filarial infections in humans are caused by two species, Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens. These parasites are associated mainly with embolic infarcts of the pulmonary artery and subcutaneous nodules, respectively. An unusual dirofilarial infection in a Greek patient who showed marked eosinophilia and microfilaremia is presented. Although the identification of Dirofilaria species is not conclusive, this report is the first on a case of microfilaremia from a Dirofilaria infection in an immunocompetent patient.

Shark fin electrocardiographic (ECG) pattern, also known as 'Lambda-wave', 'giant R waves', or 'triangular QRS-ST-T waveform' is a dangerous ECG pattern associated with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). It is formed by the fusion of QRS, ST, and T waves and predicts the high risk of mortality due to cardiogenic shock and ventricular fibrillation. The management should be aggressive with reperfusion via thrombolysis or percutaneous intervention, ideally in the intensive care unit with ventricular assist devices. This ECG pattern may be misdiagnosed as wide complex tachycardia or the E

Hemostasis is one of the most important process of physiology for human to live, in which hemostatic factors such as platelets and coagulation factors play an important role. On the other hand, thrombosis is often defined as a critical pathophysiology represented by myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction and pulmonary embolism, in which hemostatic factors also play a key part. Thus, these hemostatic factors have role in both good and bad aspects. Thrombosis is marked by sudden onset, irreversible dysfunction and recurrence, and classified to arterial and venous thromboses. The former is ch

A male infant (gestational age, 26 weeks and 1 day; birthweight, 752 g) was treated for respiratory distress syndrome and thereafter required mechanical ventilation due to chronic pulmonary insufficiency. On the 34th day after birth, urine volume suddenly decreased and hypotension, oliguria, and generalized edema developed. Laboratory studies revealed rapid progression of severe hyponatremia and hyperkalemia. Although hypovolemic shock was suspected, the patient did not respond to conventional treatment of volume expansion and inotropic support. Only treatment with glucocorticoids was effectiv

A 42 year old woman was referred to the emergency department from the radiology department after having a syncopal episode during a triplex examination of the lower extremities for acute painful right leg swelling five hours earlier that morning. She had no significant medical history, smoked 3-5 cigarettes a day, and had been taking contraceptive medication for menorrhagia for the preceding three months. On presentation she was cyanotic, dyspnoeic, and haemodynamically unstable. ECG showed sinus tachycardia of 120 beats/min with ST elevations from V1 through V3 mimicking anteroseptal acute my

BACKGROUND: Left main coronary artery compression syndrome (LMCS) is a well-characterized phenomenon resulting from compression of the left main coronary artery (LMCA) between the aorta and an enlarged pulmonary arterial trunk. The development of LMCS is usually described in the context of severe pulmonary arterial hypertension. Cases of LMCS, in the context of unpalliated congenital heart disease (CHD), are complex clinical scenarios that challenge traditional treatment paradigms.
CASE SUMMARY: Here, we discuss two thought-provoking patients with unpalliated CHD complicated by severe pulmona

Pulmonary embolism in children is a rare condition, associated with high mortality. Clinical presentation is nonspecific. Pulmonary embolism may present initially similar to bacterial endocarditis of the right heart, septic thrombophlebitis, or osteomyelitis. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl who had dyspnea over the four months before consultation, complicated three months later by hemoptysis. She was diagnosed with subacute bacterial endocarditis secondary to group D Streptococcus, developed upon a ventricular septal defect. Two weeks later, the child had sudden chest pain and tachypne

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory failure has been one of the most important causes of death in intensive care units, and certain aspects of its pulmonary pathology are currently unknown.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to describe the demographic data, etiology, and pulmonary histopathological findings of different diseases in the autopsies of patients with acute respiratory failure.
METHOD: Autopsies of 4,710 patients with acute respiratory failure from 1990 to 2008 were reviewed, and the following data were obtained: age, sex, and major associated diseases. The pulmonary histopathology was ca

In an intensive care unit an important role is assigned to respiratory physiotherapy. Its principal task is efficacious toilet of the bronchi by fluidifying the secretions, promoting their ungluing from the respiratory tree and facilitating their evacuation by cough or by aspiration with a catheter or bronchoscope. The technique comprises the inhalation of a secretolytic (e.g. Bisolvon, NaCl 9%) and, in the case of asthma, bronchospasmolytic (e.g. Ventoline) aerosol followed by breathing exercises. The other objectives of physiotherapy are to ensure a better distribution of inspired air, incre

Twenty-four patients with cardiac myxomas consisting of 22 left and 2 right atrial myxomas were operated on. All myxomas were removed with an excision of the attachment walls using a cardiopulmonary bypass. Two myxomas required a partial cardiopulmonary bypass from the femoral vein to the artery prior to operation because they were on the verge of becoming stuck in the atrioventricular valves and potentially causing shock. For embolic complications of myxoma, the embolus of the external carotid artery was extirpated before undergoing cardiac surgery. In a patient with pulmonary infarction, the…
