Radiolucent Lesions of the Jaws: An Attempted Demonstration of the Use of Co-Word Analysis to List Main Similar Pathologies.

(1) Background: Many radiolucent jaw lesions exist, and they often show a radiographic resemblance, rendering diagnosis a challenging act. C … Ameloblastoma was frequently mentioned together with odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and radicular cyst. Osseous dysplasia was co-mentioned with osteomyelitis, ossifying fibroma, odontoma, fibrous dysplasia, and apical periodontitis. (4) Conclusions: The co-word analysis, a form of bibliometric analysis, could demonstrate a relatedness of radiolucent …

Development of a Lumbar Extradural Arachnoid Cyst Associated with a Lumbar Catheter of Lumboperitoneal Shunt: A Case Report.

A 78-year-old man, who had undergone lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) placement for idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus eight years prior, presented with intermittent claudication, lower back pain, and radicular pain on the inside of the right thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extradural arachnoid cyst (EDAC) above the lumbar catheter of the LPS. The EDAC compressed the spinal dural sac and cauda equina toward the anterior side at level L3/4, triggering his clinical manifestations. The LPS was removed and simultaneously converted into a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS), which

Non-surgical and guided-bone-regeneration surgical management of Type-3b dens invaginatus with an apico-marginal defect: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus (DI), an unusual developmental anomaly is a challenge for the operating dentist with regard to its diagnosis and treatment. This case report presents the successful management of a Type-3b DI in a permanent maxillary lateral incisor associated with a large radicular cyst and communicating apico-marginal defect (Von Arx type IIb). METHODS AND RESULTS: A 19-year-old female patient reported pain and palatal swelling. During the clinical examination, tooth #12 exhibited tenderness to percussion, and presented a deep periodontal pocket depth (PPD) of 12 mm, along with …

Juvenile ossifying fibroma: a case study.

We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with a juvenile ossifying fibroma in the right mandibular angle and a radicular cyst in the left mandibular angle, which produced a major swelling at the level of the mandibular angles and prevented the correct eruption of the lower first molars. After the clinical and radiological (panoramic X-ray and dental scan of the mandible), the corresponding surgical treatment (cystectomy and remodelling) and histopathological study were carried out. Although juvenile ossifying fibroma is an uncommon clinical entity, its aggressive local behaviour and high r…

[The nonhealing of the buccal mucosa after tooth extraction. Apropos a case of histiocytosis X].

We report a case of eosinophilic granuloma falsely diagnosed as a radicular cyst in a 28-year-old patient. Between August 1996 and June 1997, successful extraction [correction of avulsion] of teeth 36 and 37 was followed by non-healing of the mucosa in the corresponding sockets. Three bone biopsies were needed to establish the diagnosis of histiocytosis X. In case of non-healing of the intraoral mucosa after tooth extraction [correction of avulsion], the first step is to rule out a malignant tumor. A clinical and radiographic work-up as well as biopsy are needed. Less common conditions such as…

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor presenting as periapical disease.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor commonly occurs in association with the crowns of unerupted teeth. An extrafollicular variant, radiographically in relationship to root apices, has been reported. However, clear association with the root apices at surgery has not been demonstrated. We report a case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in the anterior mandible in a 21-year-old woman that presented radiographically at the root apices and at surgery as a radicular cyst. We believe this represents the first reported case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor presenting as periapical disease both clinically and…

An automated diagnostic support system for jaw pathologies on panoramic radiographs: a DenseNet121-CBAM deep learning study with histopathological correlation.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and prospectively validate a novel deep learning model, integrating a DenseNet architecture with a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), for the automated classification of six common jaw pathologies from orthopantomogram (OPG) images. METHODS: A retrospective dataset of 236 histopathologically confirmed pathological OPGs (Ameloblastoma, Dentigerous Cyst, Odontogenic Keratocyst, Radicular Cyst, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Osteomyelitis) and 5200 normal OPGs was used for model training and pre-training. The DenseNet121-CBAM model was trained using transfer learning, …

[Differential diagnosis of cystic and cystic-like lesions of the jaw].

The difficulties in the differential diagnosis of jaw cysts are demonstrated by 10 selected case studies. Panorama radiographies are basic for radiodiagnosis. Supplementary radiographs, including CT, are often necessary. In general, the final diagnosis can be given after synopsis of clinical, radiographic and patho-histological findings.

Exosomes from Human Periapical Cyst-MSCs: Theranostic Application in Parkinson's Disease.

The scientific community continuously strives to get new disease models, to discover early markers or novel therapeutic approaches, improving the diagnosis and prognosis of several human pathologies. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is characterized by a long asymptomatic phase, characterized by a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons. Recently, the human Periapical Cyst-Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hPCy-MSCs) have been differentiated in functional dopaminergic neurons: such oral-derived MSCs and the hPCy-MSCs-derived exosomes may represent a strategic and useful in vitro study-model, as well as intriguin

Echographic evaluation of bone lesions of endodontic origin: report of two cases in the same patient.

We report on two periapical lesions of endodontic origin detected in the maxillary bone of the same patient, whose echographic examination was used to address a tentative differential diagnosis between a granuloma and a cystic lesion. The patient on whom two periapical lesions were diagnosed with clinical and conventional radiographic findings and scheduled for endodontic surgery, was also examined using echography and color power doppler at the site of the lesions. The lesions were echographically described in each case according to a scheme from a previous work. A tentative differential diag
