Potential Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms markers for radiation dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To identify potential Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) of susceptibility for the development of acute radiation dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients, and also to verify the association between SNPs and the severity of RD. METHODS: This systematic review was reported according to the PRISMA guideline. The proportion meta-analysis was performed to identify the prevalence of genetic markers by geographical region and radiation dermatitis severity. The meta-analysis was performed to verify the association between genetic markers and RD severity. The certainty of the evidence

Efficacy of a hydroactive colloid gel versus historical controls for the prevention of radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation in breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation (RIMD) is a complication that can affect patients' quality of life and jeopardize radiotherapy outcomes. The curative use of a hydroactive colloid gel has previously been shown effective in the management of RIMD in breast cancer patients. This study aimed at investigating the efficacy of this same gel but in the prevention of RIMD. METHODS: A group of breast cancer patients who applied the hydroactive gel from start to end of post-lumpectomy radiotherapy (Preventive Hydrogel group) were compared with two groups of matched historical controls:

Recall erythema phenomenon following Er:YAG laser treatment: two case studies and literature review.

Recall erythema is a phenomenon occurring when an area of epidermis treated with laser is later exposed to a trigger, most often sunlight or hot water, causing erythema in the zone of laser treatment after post-treatment erythema has already resolved. Radiation recall dermatitis is a more specific subtype of recall erythema in which an area treated with radiation is subjected to another exposure causing erythema in the area of previous radiation. Cases of recall dermatitis after laser treatment are extremely rare and have only been reported with diode neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet la

Ulcerated erythematous plaque on the right breast localized to the previously irradiated area.

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an inflammatory reaction limited to previously irradiated areas and occurs following the subsequent administration of a drug. Herein, we present a patient with severe RRD associated with pain and necrosis.

Chlorambucil-Induced Radiation Recall Dermatitis.

A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (Figure 1). She was treated with six cycles of cyclophosphamide, hydroxydaunorubicin, oncovin (vincristine), and prednisolone (CHOP) and three cycles of fludarabine and mitoxantrone. Ten months later she received radiotherapy to the left groin (total dose of 50 Gy in 25 fractions over 5 weeks) without complications.

Postirradiation Pseudosclerodermatous Panniculitis of the Leg: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

Postirradiation pseudosclerodermatous panniculitis presents as an erythematous indurated plaque, on a previously irradiated area. Histopathologically, thick and sclerotic septa and inflammatory infiltrate with foamy histiocytes and adiponecrosis are seen. To date, 12 cases have been reported worldwide. Hereby, we report the case of a 68-year-old woman who developed an indurated painful erythematous plaque on her right leg after radiotherapy for a soft tissue sarcoma, with a septal panniculitis and lobular adiponecrosis on histopathological examination. This is the 13th case reported and the se

A child with gemcitabine-induced severe radiation recall myositis resulting in a compartment syndrome.

Chemotherapeutic induction of radiation recall (RR) is a rare event in which a chemotherapeutic agent given days to years after radiation therapy causes an inflammation reaction of the tissues within the irradiated area-"recalling" increased radiation effects to that area. In this unique case, a 14-year-old girl with a synovial sarcoma of the forearm was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Gemcitabine was administered in an adjuvant setting inducing a RR reaction. The severity of the inflammation resulted in a forearm myositis secondarily causing a compartment syndrome

Curcumin for radiation dermatitis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of thirty breast cancer patients.

Radiation dermatitis occurs in approximately 95% of patients receiving radiotherapy (RT) for breast cancer. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the ability of curcumin to reduce radiation dermatitis severity in 30 breast cancer patients. Eligible patients were adult females with noninflammatory breast cancer or carcinoma in situ prescribed RT without concurrent chemotherapy. Randomized patients took 2.0 grams of curcumin or placebo orally three times per day (i.e., 6.0 grams daily) throughout their course of RT. Weekly assessments included Radia

Mepilex Lite dressings for managing acute radiation dermatitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients: a systematic controlled clinical trial.

More than 60% nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients receiving the radical radiotherapy treatment will develop moist desquamation skin reaction at some time during the course of treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Mepilex Lite dressings and the usual care in the healing of postirradiation dermatitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. This was a randomized controlled trial, and a sample of 88 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients who had developed radiation dermatitis was assessed. Comparisons were made regarding parameters related to wound healing, including heal

Severe radiation therapy-related soft tissue toxicity in a patient with porphyria cutanea tarda: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Some porphyrias are associated with cutaneous phototoxicity due to photoactivation of porphyrins, but whether ionizing radiation can have an additive effect is not clear. We report a case of severe radiation therapy-related toxicity in a patient with porphyria cutanea tarda and review the literature. METHODS: A 50-year-old man with porphyria cutanea was treated for lower lip squamous cell carcinoma with definitive radiation therapy. During radiation therapy, acute toxicity was of an expected onset and severity. Six months after treatment completion, he developed skin hypopigmentat

Recall dermatitis after systemic treatment with paclitaxel.

BACKGROUND: Recall phenomena of the skin at the site of prior radiation treatment are well established after systemic anti-neoplastic therapy. The aim of this report is to describe a rare clinical entity of recall dermatitis after systemic treatment with paclitaxel without a history of previous radiation at the site of reaction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 63-year-old Caucasian female patient treated with paclitaxel because of breast cancer (T3 N1 M0) is presented. RESULTS: Five days after the fifth-in-a-row infusion swelling and redness occurred on the left arm, where the drug has been administ

Clinical effects of lianbai liquid in prevention and treatment of dermal injury caused by radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Lianbai liquid in prevention and treatment of acute radiation dermal injury. METHOD: From May 2000 to December 2005, 126 cancer patients were randomly divided into a prevention group of 75 cases given externally topical application of Lianbai liquid since the first radiotherapy, and a control group I of 51 cases given only advice after radiotherapy; while the other 92 cancer patients who had already had grade III acute radiation-induced dermal injury were randomly divided into a treatment group of 54 cases treated by externally topical use of Lianbai liquid
