Ocular microvascular changes in patients with sepsis: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to detect differences in the conjunctival microcirculation between septic patients and healthy subjects and to evaluate the course of conjunctival and retinal microvasculature in survivors and non-survivors over a 24-h period of time. METHODS: This single-center prospective observational study was performed in mixed ICU in a tertiary teaching hospital. We included patients with sepsis or septic shock within the first 24 h after ICU admission. Conjunctival imaging, using an IDF video microscope, and retinal imaging, using portable digital fundus camera, as

[Diabetes and peripheral arterial occlusive disease: therapeutic potential and pro-angiogenic strategies].

Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus; up to 80% of deaths in patients with diabetes are closely associated with vascular disease. The ability of the organism to form a collateral network of blood vessels constitutes an important response to vascular occlusive disease and determines to a large part the clinical consequences and severity of tissue ischemia. The development of new vessels is significantly reduced in diabetic patients with coronary or peripheral artery disease. This probably contributes to the severe cours

Assessment of Vascular Density, Macular Layer Thickness, and Foveal Avascular Zone in Pseudoexfoliation Disease.

PRÉCIS: Significant reductions were observed in macular vessel density and ganglion cell layer thickness in patients with XFG and XFS, suggesting these parameters may serve as early biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of glaucoma. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to enhance early glaucoma diagnosis in pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) patients by assessing changes in macular vessel density and retinal layer thickness, and by investigating the relationship between these parameters and disease progression from XFS to pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cr

Establishment of the reproducible branch retinal artery occlusion mouse model and intravital longitudinal imaging of the retinal CX3CR1-GFP+ cells after spontaneous arterial recanalization.

Animal models of retinal artery occlusion (RAO) have been widely used in many studies. However, most of these studies prefer using a central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) which is a typical global ischemia model of the retina, due to the technical limitation of producing single vessel targeted modeling with real-time imaging. A focal ischemia model, such as branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), is also needed for explaining interactions, including the immunological reaction between the ischemic retina and adjacent healthy retina. Accordingly, a relevant model for clinical RAO patients has

The Association of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Cerebral Gray Matter Volume Is Independent of Retinal Vascular Architecture and Retinopathy.

It is uncertain whether small vessel disease underlies the relationship between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and brain atrophy. We aimed to study whether retinal vascular architecture, as a proxy for cerebral small vessel disease, may modify or mediate the associations of T2DM with brain volumes. In this cross-sectional study using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans and retinal photographs in 451 people with and without T2DM, we measured brain volumes, geometric measures of retinal vascular architecture, clinical retinopathy, and MRI cerebrovascular lesions. There were 270 people with (

Dietary Compound Chrysin Inhibits Retinal Neovascularization with Abnormal Capillaries in db/db Mice.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) develops in a significant proportion of patients with chronic diabetes, characterized by retinal macular edema and abnormal retinal vessel outgrowth leading to vision loss. Chrysin, a naturally-occurring flavonoid found in herb and honeycomb, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. This study sought to determine the protective effects of chrysin on retinal neovascularization with abnormal vessels and blood-retinal barrier (BRB) breakdown in 33 mM glucose-exposed human retinal endothelial cells and in db/db mouse eyes. High glucose caused retina

Multimodal imaging of congenital retinal macrovessel with secondary foveal hypoplasia.

Congenital retinal macrovessel (CRM) is defined as a large aberrant blood vessel that traverses through the central macula. It can have large tributaries extending on both sides of the horizontal raphe. The condition is typically asymptomatic. However, visual loss may be reported in case of associated branch retinal artery occlusion, cavernous haemangioma, retinal artery macroaneurysm, retinal deep capillary ischaemia, retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage. However, association of CRM and foveal hypoplasia has rarely been reported. We report multimodal imaging in a patient who was present

From laboratory to clinic: the development of web-based tools for the estimation of retinal diagnostic parameters.

Over the years, tools for the analysis of retinal images have been developed by several research groups but their usage has been mainly confined within the developing institutions. One possibility to foster their adoption is to develop them as web-based tools. We present here three such systems we recently developed. They are specifically focused on the estimation of retinal vascular parameters, such as arteriolar narrowing (AVR parameter), vessel tortuosity, and vessel caliber narrowing and tortuosity in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) images. These systems have been successfully evaluated a

Assessing the retinal microvasculature in heart failure: A systematic review and possible clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Despite an extensive armamentarium, the long-term prognosis of heart failure remains poor, and its pathophysiology is still not fully understood. Microvascular function is impaired early in the development of HF and linked to disease progression. Retinal imaging provides a unique opportunity for fast, non-invasive and affordable detection of early systemic microvascular disease. AIM: To provide a systematic overview of current literature regarding retinal microvascular changes in HF. METHODS: A literature search was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Lib

Evaluation of Subclinical Retinal Disease in Patients Affected by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with No Evidence of Ocular Involvement-An Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Original Study.

Lupus retinopathy is the second most common eye involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), associated with significant visual deterioration and well-known negative prognostic factor for survival. Ocular manifestation in SLE, relating the retina, ranges from asymptomatic vascular involvement to vision devastating vascular occlusions. Subclinical microvascular changes are undetectable in slit lamp examination, hence are underdiagnosed. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel, easy to interpret and non-invasive technique that allows retinal vessels visualization. OCTA s…

Concurrent Physiological and Pathological Angiogenesis in Retinopathy of Prematurity and Emerging Therapies.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an ocular vascular disease affecting premature infants, characterized by pathological retinal neovascularization (RNV), dilated and tortuous retinal blood vessels, and retinal or vitreous hemorrhages that may lead to retinal detachment, vision impairment and blindness. Compared with other neovascular diseases, ROP is unique because of ongoing and concurrent physiological and pathological angiogenesis in the developing retina. While the disease is currently treated by laser or cryotherapy, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents have been extens

Usefulness of retinal microvascular endothelial dysfunction as a predictor of coronary artery disease.

Endothelial dysfunction is a key feature of atherosclerosis. Retinal microvascular endothelial function can be assessed using noninvasive dynamic vessel imaging techniques. Whether it is impaired in subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD) is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the relation of retinal microvascular endothelial function with CAD. Vascular studies were performed in 197 prospectively recruited subjects divided into 2 groups: those without CAD but ≥2 cardiovascular risk factors (non-CAD controls; n = 119) and those with stable CAD (n = 78). Retinal microvascular endot

Longitudinal characterization of retinal vasculature alterations with optical coherence tomography angiography in a mouse model of tauopathy.

Tauopathies are a family of neurodegenerative diseases which predominately afflict the rapidly growing aging population suffering from various brain disorders including Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism-17 and Pick disease. As the only visually accessible region of the central nervous system, in recent years, the retina has attracted extensive attention for its potential as a target for visualizing and quantifying emerging biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Our previous study has found that retinal vascular inflammation and leakage occur at the very early st
