Low intake of calcium and vitamin D, but not zinc, iron or vitamin A, is associated with stunting in 2- to 5-year-old children.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined the nutritional factors associated with the high levels of stunting in 2- to 5-y-old children in an impoverished South African setting where liver is frequently eaten and vitamin A deficiency known to be absent. METHODS: Children's dietary intake was assessed by a single 24-h recall. Heights and weights were measured and information was obtained on breast-feeding history, the child's habitual milk intake, as well as substance use by the mother during pregnancy (n = 150). RESULTS: The overall prevalence of stunting was 36.9% (CI 29.2, 44.6) and

B vitamin status and concentrations of homocysteine and methylmalonic acid in elderly German women.

BACKGROUND: Prior investigations found that elderly persons are at higher risk than are younger persons for B vitamin deficiency, which leads to elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations that are associated with an increased risk for certain diseases such as coronary artery disease. To date, published data have shown decreased vitamin status and elevated tHcy among the elderly. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the dietary intake and the blood status of various B vitamins and tHcy and methylmalonic acid (MMA) concentrations in 178 younger (60-70-y-old) female seniors. DESIGN: Dietary in

Nutritional status of free-living Alzheimer's patients.

Self-reported, dietary intake and biochemical estimates of thiamine, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B-12, protein, and iron were compared in 22, free-living elders by individuals who had senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) and in 41 who were cognitively normal (CN). The two groups did not differ significantly in their intake of these nutrients or the number of deficiency states for intake (less than 67% RDA). Low serum transketolase (thiamin; p less than 0.055), red blood cell (RBC) folate (p less than 0.06), and serum vitamin B-12 (p less than 0.05) levels occurred more often in SDAT

Clinically-diagnosed vitamin deficiencies and disorders in the entire United States military population, 1997-2015.

BACKGROUND: This study examined incidence rates, temporal trends, and demographic factors associated with vitamin deficiencies/disorders in all United States military personnel from 1997 to 2015 (mean N = 1,382,266/year). METHODS: Employing an ecological study design, the Defense Medical Epidemiological Database and specific International Classification of Diseases codes were used to determine incidence rates for clinically-diagnosed vitamin deficiencies/disorders. Associations with demographic factors were examined. RESULTS: The overall incidence rate of vitamin deficiencies/disorders was 9

Multiple micronutrient supplements improve micronutrient status and anemia but not growth and morbidity of Indonesian infants: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Multiple micronutrient deficiencies are highly prevalent in Indonesia, but the interventions are still focused on single micronutrients. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of multiple micronutrient supplements for improving micronutrient status, anemia, growth, and morbidity of Indonesian infants. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 284 infants aged 6-12 mo were randomly allocated to 4 treatment groups for 23 wk; 260 (92%) infants completed the study. Group 1 (DMM) received one adequate intake of multiple micronutrient supplements daily (n = 66); group 2 (WMM) received 2

[Structural-functional damage to cellular membranes in deficiency of vitamins A, E, B2, B6, PP in children with calculous pyelonephritis].

Lipids were studied in 150 patients with nephrolithiasis, calculous pyelonephritis; enzymes, LPO products, phospholipase in 111 patients; vitamins A and E in 136 patients, vitamins B2, B6 and PP in 146 patients in the course of the disease, at admission and after treatment. In acute purulent and aggravated chronic calculous pyelonephritis lysophospholipids levels rose manifolds. Activation of LPO products, phospholipase, organ-specific enzymes is closely associated with low provision of vitamins A, E, B2, B6, PP. Deficiency of these vitamins ranged from 76.8 to 94.6% in acute purulent calculou

Age-related changes in the parameters of carbohydrate metabolism and supply of vitamins B1, B2 in residents of two northern regions.

A great deal of research was being done in studying of the age-related characteristics of carbohydrate metabolism and the provision of vitamins B1, B2 among the population of the Subarctic (SR) and Arctic (AR) regions, differing in the extreme natural and climatic-geographic living conditions. The surveyed population was divided into five age groups: 16-21, 22-35, 36-45, 46-60 and 61-74 years old. The parameters of carbohydrate metabolism (glucose, lactate, pyruvate) were determined in the blood serum, the content of thiamine (thiamin diphosphate effect) and riboflavin - in hemolysates, and th

Reprint of: Nutrition in the Management of Cirrhosis and its Neurological Complications.

Malnutrition is a common feature of chronic liver diseases that is often associated with a poor prognosis including worsening of clinical outcome, neuropsychiatric complications as well as outcome following liver transplantation. Nutritional assessment in patients with cirrhosis is challenging owing to confounding factors related to liver failure. The objectives of nutritional intervention in cirrhotic patients are the support of liver regeneration, the prevention or correction of specific nutritional deficiencies and the prevention and/or treatment of the complications of liver disease per se

Early response to the effect of iron fortification in the Venezuelan population.

In Venezuela a severe economic crisis beginning in 1983 provoked a progressive reduction of the quality and quantity of food consumed by the low socioeconomic strata of the population. In these strata, which represent > or = 80% of the Venezuelan population, we had seen a continuous increase in the prevalence of iron deficiency during that recent decade. As a result, in 1993 the Venezuela Government created the Special Commission for Enrichment of Foods. That same year a fortification program began in which precooked yellow and white maize and wheat flours were enriched with 20 and 50 mg Fe (a

[Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy caused by cytochrome-oxidase deficiency].

Mitochondrial cytopathies are due to genetic anomalies in the oxidative phosphorylation enzymes (excepting Krebs cycle, pyruvate and certain other mitochondrial enzymes). Recently discovered, these diseases have a characteristic heterogeneous clinical expression because of the ubiquitous nature of this intracellular organelle. We observed a case in a 16-year-old girl who had cytochrome C oxidase deficiency. The child was born to non-consanguinous parents and had a healthy brother. The first manifestation of the disease was a systolic murmur heard at the age of 4 years. Progressively, exertion

B-group vitamin production by lactic acid bacteria--current knowledge and potential applications.

Although most vitamins are present in a variety of foods, human vitamin deficiencies still occur in many countries, mainly because of malnutrition not only as a result of insufficient food intake but also because of unbalanced diets. Even though most lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are auxotrophic for several vitamins, it is now known that certain strains have the capability to synthesize water-soluble vitamins such as those included in the B-group (folates, riboflavin and vitamin B(12) amongst others). This review article will show the current knowledge of vitamin biosynthesis by LAB and show how

Vitamin supplements to Indian women using low dosage oral contraceptives.

Effect of continuous and intermittent vitamin supplements on vitamin status, serum proteins and lipids were examined in Indian women of low-income group, receiving a low-dose oral contraceptive over a period of 3-6 months. To find out non-specific time related changes, vitamin supplemented and unsupplemented control groups of non-OC users were also examined. OC treatment did not change serum chemistry significantly. The significant biochemical changes were: altered tryptophan metabolism and elevated plasma vitamin A levels. Former could be prevented by administering multivitamins containing 10
