Falls and Injuries After Heading to a Bomb Shelter Following Rocket Warning Sirens in Israel.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Israel has experienced a rise in rocket attacks, forcing civilians to evacuate quickly to bomb shelters. These rapid evacuations have resulted in increased fall-related injuries, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with preexisting medical conditions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the patterns of injuries, the contributing factors to falls and orthopedic injuries, particularly fractures, sustained during falls in the process of evacuation to shelters during rocket warning sirens. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study, including

A monoclonal antibody-based, time-resolved fluorescence microsphere immunochromatographic testing strip for rapid and sensitive detection of H7 avian influenza viruses.

BACKGROUND: Avian influenza viruses (AIVs), particularly the H7N9 subtype, pose a persistent threat to global health security, having caused 1,687 human infections and 615 deaths to date. The significant socioeconomic impact and pandemic potential of H7N9 underscore the urgent need for rapid, reliable diagnostic tools to facilitate early intervention and control measures. METHODS: This study conducted on 2025 developed and optimized a time-resolved fluorescence microsphere immunochromatographic strip (TRFICS) assay for the rapid detection of H7 AIVs. The assay was constructed using two specifi

Hidden hunger in Europe: a review on determinants, fragmented policy responses, and implementation barriers.

Despite significant improvements in food security and healthcare, micronutrient deficiencies - or "hidden hunger" - remain a widespread and under-recognized public health issue across Europe. These deficiencies impair metabolic, cognitive, and immune functions, and are linked to non-communicable diseases and increased morbidity in an aging European population. This policy review, undertaken within the European Union (EU)-funded Zero Hidden Hunger EU project, examines the demographic, socioeconomic, and geographical drivers of micronutrient deficiencies in Europe and evaluates existing national

The Flush Model: A Novel Framework to Manage Surgeons' Mental Fatigue and Cognitive Load.

BACKGROUND: Mental fatigue significantly impairs surgeons' cognitive performance, compromising patient safety. However, surgical practice lacks an integrated framework to understand and mitigate this cognitive strain effectively. CONCEPTUAL MODEL: We propose adapting the Flush model, initially developed for endurance sports, to surgical settings. This model conceptualizes mental fatigue through a dynamic analogy of a water tank composed of 4 main components: perceived fatigue (ballcock), fatigue accumulation (filling rate), fatigue recovery (drain rate), and a safety margin (security reserve)

First report of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in wildlife consumed as bushmeat in Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a growing global threat to human health, food security, and animal welfare. Wild animals, often consumed as bushmeat, may serve as reservoirs of pathogenic and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antibiotic resistance profiles of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella spp. in wild animals intended for human consumption in Cameroon. METHODOLOGY: Between September 2023 and December 2024, 427 fecal samples were collected from twelve wild animal species, including mammals (41.0 %), birds (57.6

Exploring Police Officer Experiences During the Transfer of People in Crisis to Emergency Department Nurses and Staff.

Police officers are increasingly tasked with responding to people in crisis (PIC), often resulting in transfers to emergency departments (EDs) where they can encounter challenges like long wait times, safety concerns, and conflicting perspectives between the medical and legal systems. This qualitative study explores the experiences of police officers during the transfer of PIC to ED nurses and staff. Eleven police officers were recruited and interviewed, providing contextual information about ED transfers in the greater Montreal area. The findings revealed that police officers face varied chal

'I need a break': the effect of choice of rest break duration on vigilance.

Vigilance is the ability to sustain attention for an extended period of time and to respond to infrequently occurring critical signals. One of the most replicable findings within the vigilance literature is the performance decrement; the decline in performance as time on task increases. In an effort to attenuate the decrement, and decrease the workload and stress associated with vigilance, the present study investigated the role of choice of rest break duration on vigilance performance, perceived workload, and stress. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions: (1) choice condition,

[Protection Against Violence and Abuse in Medical Institutions - Reasons, Prevalence and Implications for Practice].

Protection Against Violence and Abuse in Medical Institutions - Reasons, Prevalence and Implications for Practice Reported cases of (sexual) abuse in institutions as well as the results of surveys show that violence against children and adolescents, but also against adults, occurs also in medical institutions. There are still few studies on the frequency of these cases. However, the cases that have come to public attention show that medical institutions bear systemic risk factors for such assaults. On the other hand, medical institutions also play an important role in child protection, since m

A novel approach to modeling epidemic vulnerability, applied to Aedes aegypti-vectored diseases in Perú.

BACKGROUND: A proactive approach to preventing and responding to emerging infectious diseases is critical to global health security. We present a three-stage approach to modeling the spatial distribution of outbreak vulnerability to Aedes aegypti-vectored diseases in Perú. METHODS: Extending a framework developed for modeling hemorrhagic fever vulnerability in Africa, we modeled outbreak vulnerability in three stages: index case potential (stage 1), outbreak receptivity (stage 2), and epidemic potential (stage 3), stratifying scores on season and El Niño events. Subsequently, we evaluated the

Rapid and simultaneous detection of Japanese encephalitis virus by real-time nucleic acid sequence-based amplification.

Japaneses encephalitis (JE) is most common zoonoses caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) with a high mortality and disability rate. To take timely preventive and control measures, early and rapid detection of JE RNA is necessary. But due to characteristic brief and low viraemia, JE RNA detection remains challenging. In this study, a real-time nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (RT-NASBA) was developed for rapid and simultaneous detection of JEV. Four pairs of primer were designed using a multiple genome alignment of all JEV strains from GenBank. NASBA assay established and optima

Effectiveness of the 'Hold me Tight' Relationship Enhancement Program in a Self-referred and a Clinician-referred Sample: An Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy-Based Approach.

While evidence-based couple therapies are available, only a minority of troubled couples seek help and they often do this too late. To reach more couples earlier, the couple relationship education (CRE) group program "Hold me Tight" (HmT) based on Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) was developed. This study is the first to examine the effectiveness of HmT. Using a three-wave (waiting period, treatment, and follow-up) within-subject design, HmT was delivered to 79 self-referred couples and 50 clinician-referred couples. We applied a comprehensive outcome measure battery. Our main findin
