Self-appraisal, anxiety and depression in women. A prospective enquiry.

Depressive illness is known to be associated with low self-evaluation, but it has been suggested that there may be a reciprocal connection as well, such that low self-appraisal (in the absence of illness) makes the subsequent onset of depression more likely. A prospective study, using a community sample of 376 women, provided data about clinical state over a period of 18 months, and self-appraisal questionnaire scores were determined on two occasions separated by 6 months. There was no evidence that low self-evaluation predicted future episodes of depressive illness, except in women who report

The 18th International Twin Congress, and a Look at Twin Research in Wales/Twin Research Reviews: Temperamental Similarities and Twin Relations; Maximizing Twin Designs; Rare Tubal Ectopic Pregnancy; Twins' Academic Self-Concept Formation/In the Media: Identical Infant Twins Reunited; Birth of Identical-Fraternal Quadruplets; Identical Twin Comedians; 'Twice in a Lifetime': Meeting an Unrelated Look-Alike; Twins in the Tour de France.

The 18th International Society for Twin Studies convention took place between June 15-17, 2023, in Budapest, Hungary. A selective sampling of highlights from the meeting are presented. This is followed by a brief overview of ongoing twin research at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales and some twin treasures in the National Library. Next, reviews of timely research that examine temperamental similarities and twin relations, the maximization of twin research designs, a rare ectopic twin pregnancy, and twins' academic self-concept formation are presented. The final section covers stories appe

Attachment styles, emotion regulation, and adjustment in adolescence.

Attachment style differences in psychological symptomatology, self-concept, and risky or problem behaviors were examined in a community sample (N = 1,989) of Black and White adolescents, 13 to 19 years old. Overall, secure adolescents were the best-adjusted group, though not necessarily the least likely to engage in risky behaviors. Anxious adolescents were the worst-adjusted group, reporting the poorest self-concepts and the highest levels of symptomatology and risk behaviors. In contrast, avoidant adolescents reported generally high levels of symptomatology and poor self-concepts but similar

The neoantigen quality model: Is closer to self more non-self?

T cells recognize antigens from pathogens and transformed cells. Yet what antigen is "ideal"? We propose a theoretical framework in which recognition is governed by T cell selection maximized near, not far from, self. Genomic errors generate antigens closer to self that paradoxically overlap with pathogen antigens and are immunogenic and non-self. We formalize this concept as the Neoantigen Quality Model, recasting antigen recognition as an adaptation to surveil the self and non-self living worlds.

Anger and aggressiveness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the mediating role of responsibility, non-acceptance of emotions, and social desirability.

According to psychodynamic and cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anger and aggression play an important role in the development and maintenance of the disorder. (Sub-) clinical samples with OCD have reported higher anger and anger suppression. Patients with checking-related symptoms of OCD showed a less aggressive self-concept as assessed by an Implicit Association Test (IAT). This study assessed anger and aggressiveness self-concepts in OCD as well as possible mediators of the link between OCD and aggressiveness. A total of 48 patients with OCD and 45 healthy controls w

The salience of cancer and the "survivor" identity for people who have completed acute cancer treatment: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Globally, there are nearly 33 million persons who have survived 5 or more years after a diagnosis of cancer [1]. We explore the salience of cancer in such people's self-concept as an important element for creating patient-centered care for those living with a cancer history. METHODS: Our data are responses to a free-listing exercise and subsequent qualitative interviews with 53 individuals aged between 45 and 74 who were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or breast or prostate cancer at least 3 years prior and had completed acute treatment. Participants lived in the Baltimore-Wash

Autonomy and autonomy competencies: a practical and relational approach.

This essay will address a general philosophical concern about autonomy, namely, that a conception of autonomy focused on freedom of the will alone is inadequate, once we consider the effects of oppressive forms of socialization on individuals' formation of choices. In response to this problem, I will present a brief overview of Diana Meyers's account of autonomy as relational and practical. On this view, autonomy consists in a set of socially acquired practical competencies in self-discovery, self-definition, self-knowledge, and self-direction. This account provides a distinction between choic

Behavioral adjustment of latency age children with cystic fibrosis.

One hundred and twenty-six 6 to 11-year-old latency age children with Cystic Fibrosis regularly attending the CF clinic of the Hospital for Sick Children were asked to complete the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and the Children's Health Locus of Control. Their parents were requested to complete the Child Behavior Checklist and the Family Assessment Measure. One hundred and eight (86%) participated in the study. Twenty-three percent of the children were found to have sufficient behavior problems to indicate a significant degree of maladjustment. Latency-age CF children show an increase in pro

Associations between Self-Disorders and First-Rank Symptoms: An Empirical Study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic weight of the first-rank symptoms was deemphasized in DSM-5 and a similar change is expected in ICD-11. This change was motivated by a lack of solid, empirical evidence of the diagnostic significance of first-rank symptoms for schizophrenia. Yet, it seems that Schneider's original concept of first-rank symptoms was overly simplified when it was introduced in DSM-III. Specifically, it was overlooked that first-rank symptoms, in Schneider's understanding, fundamentally involve a disorder of the self. The aim here is to empirically test Schneider's claim that first-rank

Measuring self-efficacy in U.S. older adults with chronic disease: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Self-efficacy (SE), confidence in one's abilities, is an integral concept in behavior change among older adults with chronic disease. SE improvements boost better health outcomes, such as decreases in blood glucose or pain. Although self-efficacy is a widely studied construct, the most commonly used measures in older adults with chronic disease remain unclear. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify how self-efficacy was operationalized and measured in US older adults with chronic diseases. Studies with validated SE measures for the top 10 chronic medical

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: does cognitive behavioral therapy improve home behavior?

This study evaluates the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving the home behavior of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-five boys (age 7 to 13) with a diagnosis of ADHD were randomized to a CBT or supportive therapy control group. Outcome measures included parent and teacher ratings of the child on the Behavior Problem Checklist-Attention Problem Subscale (BPC-AP), and the Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS), parent ratings on the Modified Werry Weiss Activity Scale, and child ratings on the Piers Harris Self-Concept Scale and Matching

From Self-Esteem to Selflessness: An Evidence (Gap) Map of Self-Related Processes as Mechanisms of Mindfulness-Based Interventions.

Self-related processes (SRPs) have been theorized as key mechanisms of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), but the evidence supporting these theories is currently unclear. This evidence map introduces a comprehensive framework for different types of SRPs, and how they are theorized to function as mechanisms of MBIs (target identification). The evidence map then assesses SRP target engagement by mindfulness training and the relationship between target engagement and outcomes (target validation). Discussion of the measurement of SRPs is also included. The most common SRPs measured and engage

Self-regulation and the management of stuttering.

Self-regulation refers to a process by which individuals learn to direct and control their own behavior, thoughts, and feelings to manage or eliminate their stuttering. As a concept, it has been a vital and enduring component of most approaches to managing persistent and chronic stuttering. The theoretical basis for self-regulation is briefly reviewed and the main principles of self-regulation--goal setting, cue management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation--are described and illustrated with clinical examples. Factors related to self-regulatory failure are also discussed.

Productive power and the 'practices of the self' in contraceptive counselling.

This paper explores an under-researched issue within the reproductive health of women - the discursive construction of self-examination instruction in sexual health clinics. The study utilises Foucault's work on 'productive power', the 'practices of the self' and discourse to map out how nurses instruct contraceptive-using women in self-care practices. Forty-nine consultations in sexual health clinics were tape recorded and analysed. The data reveal how nurses utilise the discourse of risk as a technique to reinforce and develop self-care practices - a concept congruent with the Greco-Roman co

Health literacy: concept analysis.

AIM: This paper reports an analysis of the concept of health literacy in order to clarify its meaning, reduce ambiguities associated with references to it, and promote consistency in using the concept in nursing dialogue and research. BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a relatively new concept in health promotion research. Only within the last decade have researchers identified the problems associated with health literacy, the role it plays in an individual's ability to comprehend health and self-care information, and its relationship to health outcomes. Clarifying the concept is essential so tha

Comparison of educational outcomes and factors associated with clinical decision-making ability between virtual reality and simulation-based training among undergraduate nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making is a core competency in nursing practice, yet opportunities for direct patient care during clinical placements have become increasingly limited. Although virtual reality (VR) and simulation-based learning (SBL) are widely used in nursing education, comparative evidence regarding their educational outcomes and predictive factors remains limited. This study compared educational outcomes between VR training and simulation-based training and identified factors associated with clinical decision-making ability among undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: This

Adjustment to the death of a sibling.

Despite the recent increase in interest in terminally ill children and their families and the post death adjustment of parents, there has been little research examining the adjustment and self concept of surviving siblings in such families. This paper discusses the results of a preliminary descriptive study of 28 children (from 14 families) whose brother or sister had died of cancer between 18 and 30 months previously. Behaviour checklists were completed by parents and teachers and self concept scales administered to the children. A lengthy semistructured interview was carried out, and measure…
