The Impact of a Self-Distanced Writing Intervention on Social Anxiety Among College Freshmen: The Mediating Roles of Cognitive Reappraisal and Self-Compassion.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is common during the transition to university, creating a need for brief, accessible psychological interventions. Traditional expressive writing has shown benefits for anxiety, but its emotionally immersive first-person format may be less suitable for some students. Self-distanced writing offers an alternative by encouraging reflection from an observer-like perspective. PURPOSE: We examined whether a four-week self-distanced writing intervention reduced social anxiety more than traditional expressive writing or neutral writing, and whether cognitive reappraisal and

Fostering speaking gains through flipped instruction: a mixed-methods study of self-regulation, motivation, and foreign language classroom anxiety in Chinese EFL learners.

INTRODUCTION: Flipped instruction has gained traction in computer-assisted language learning, but evidence of its effects on L2 speaking and the underlying affective and motivational mechanisms remains limited, especially for young adult EFL learners in East Asia. METHODS: This explanatory sequential mixed methods study examined how a 16-week flipped speaking course influenced Chinese EFL learners' speaking performance, speaking-specific self-regulation, motivation, and foreign language classroom anxiety. Seventy-four first-year English majors were assigned to a flipped group (n = 38) receivi

Psychopathological profile of patients with different forms of bruxism.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathological symptoms in patients who self-reported different forms of bruxism by means of clinical and anamnestic diagnostic criteria. Eighty-five participants were divided into four groups as sleep bruxers (12), awake bruxers (24), sleep-awake bruxers (33), and non-bruxers (16). A self-report symptom inventory questionnaire (Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R)) was filled out by all groups to determine their psychopathological symptoms. As regards mean psychopathological scores, patients with sleep-awake bruxism endorse

Using internet-based self-help to bridge waiting time for face-to-face outpatient treatment for Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and related disorders: Study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are serious conditions associated with an impaired health-related quality of life and increased healthcare utilization and costs. Despite the existence of evidence-based treatments, access to treatment is often delayed due to insufficient health care resources. Internet-based self-help interventions may have the potential to successfully bridge waiting time for face-to-face outpatient treatment and, thus, contribute to overcoming treatment gaps. However, little is known about the feasibility of implementing such interventions into routine healthcare. The aim of thi

Randomised controlled trial of cognitive behavioural therapy in COPD.

Anxiety is an important comorbidity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We investigated if cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), delivered by respiratory nurses, reduced symptoms of anxiety and was cost-effective. Patients with COPD and anxiety were randomised to CBT or self-help leaflets. Anxiety, depression and quality of life were measured at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted from a National Health Service hospital perspective and quality-adjusted life-years estimated using the EuroQol-5D questionnaire. In total, 279 patients were recruite

A randomized controlled trial of a novel self-help technique for impulse control disorders: a study on nail-biting.

Nail-biting is currently classified as an impulse control disorder not otherwise specified. Although seldom targeted as a primary symptom, nail-biting is often associated with somatic complications and decreased quality of life. The present study assessed the effectiveness of an innovative self-help technique, titled decoupling (DC). DC aims at attenuating pathological nail-biting by performing motor sequences that decouple and rearrange the behavioral elements involved in the habit. A total of 72 participants with excessive nail-biting were recruited via specialized self-help forums and were

Shame and Anxiety: The Mediating Role of Childhood Adversity in Dancers.

The combination of shame, anxiety, and a history of childhood maltreatment can have devastating effects on self-esteem and on the morbidity and mortality of an individual. Shame is a natural emotion evoked in social evaluative settings. Without some degree of shame, goal attainment is less likely. However, high levels of shame may increase pathology and decrease performance. In this crosssectional study, pre-professional and professional dancers were divided into two shame groupings: low (N = 193) and high (N = 25). Chi square and multivariate analyses of covariance (age and gender as covariat

Efficacy of Internet-Based Self-Help Interventions for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder that reduces quality of life and causes a heavy medical burden. Internet-based self-help interventions are flexible and scalable, showing potential for IBS symptom improvement, but relevant evidence is fragmented and lacks systematic review. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effects of internet-based self-help interventions on symptom severity, quality of life, and visceral sensitivity, as well as comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms, in individuals with IBS.

Understanding beneficial self-management support and the meaning of user involvement in lifestyle interventions: a qualitative study from the perspective of healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: In light of the high prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults and the subsequent stigmatization and health consequences, there is a need to develop effective interventions to support lifestyle change. The literature supports the key role of healthcare professionals (HPs) in facilitating self-management through lifestyle interventions for those with chronic conditions. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how HPs practice self-management support (SMS) and user involvement for persons afflicted by overweight or obesity in lifestyle interventions in primary care Health
