Preliminary study on application of augmented reality visualization in robotic thyroid surgery.

PURPOSE: Increased robotic surgery is attended by increased reports of complications, largely due to limited operative view and lack of tactile sense. These kinds of obstacles, which seldom occur in open surgery, are challenging for beginner surgeons. To enhance robotic surgery safety, we created an augmented reality (AR) model of the organs around the thyroid glands, and tested the AR model applicability in robotic thyroidectomy. METHODS: We created AR images of the thyroid gland, common carotid arteries, trachea, and esophagus using preoperative CT images of a thyroid carcinoma patient. For

[Treatment of hypertension in chronic kidney disease].

Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is a progressive cardiovascular syndrome caused by complex and interrelated causes. The early markers of this syndrome are often present even before the blood pressure (BP) elevation; therefore, SAH cannot only be classified by the BP elevation threshold, which sometimes is discreet. Its progression is strongly associated with structural and functional cardiovascular abnormalities, which lead to end-organ damage (heart, kidney, brain, blood vessels and other organs), and cause premature morbidity and death. In this sense, the BP is only a biomarker of this

The Development of the Calvarial Bones and Sutures and the Pathophysiology of Craniosynostosis.

The skull vault is a complex, exquisitely patterned structure that plays a variety of key roles in vertebrate life, ranging from the acquisition of food to the support of the sense organs for hearing, smell, sight, and taste. During its development, it must meet the dual challenges of protecting the brain and accommodating its growth. The bones and sutures of the skull vault are derived from cranial neural crest and head mesoderm. The frontal and parietal bones develop from osteogenic rudiments in the supraorbital ridge. The coronal suture develops from a group of Shh-responsive cells in the h…

Artificial neural interfaces for bionic cardiovascular treatments.

An artificial nerve, in the broad sense, may be conceptualized as a physical and logical interface system that reestablishes the information traffic between the central nervous system and peripheral organs. Studies on artificial nerves targeting the autonomic nervous system are in progress to explore new treatment strategies for several cardiovascular diseases. In this article, we will review our research targeting the autonomic nervous system to treat cardiovascular diseases. First, we identified the rule for decoding native sympathetic nerve activity into a heart rate using transfer function

Muscle damage from eccentric exercise: mechanism, mechanical signs, adaptation and clinical applications.

In eccentric exercise the contracting muscle is forcibly lengthened; in concentric exercise it shortens. While concentric contractions initi … point for the damage. As well as damage to muscle fibres there is evidence of disturbance of muscle sense organs and of proprioception. A second period of exercise, a week after the first, produces much less damage. This is the result of an adaptation process. One proposed mechanism for the adaptation is an increase in sarcomere number in muscle fibres. This l …

Disorganization is a completely dominant gain-of-function mouse mutation causing sporadic developmental defects.

Disorganization (Ds) is an exceptional mutation because of its diverse and profound developmental effects. Although other mouse mutations produce similar congenital defects, extreme pleiotropism, random occurrence, developmental independence of multiple defects, and type of anomaly make Ds unique. Examples of developmental defects include cranioschisis, rachischisis, thoracoschisis, exencephaly, hamartomas, and anomalies of appendages, digestive, genital and urinary tracts, sense organs, limbs and girdles, tail and pharynx. No other mutation in the mouse has such broad effects. Ds is therefore…

The endolymphatic sac and inner ear homeostasis. II: Effect of glycerol on the sensory end organs with or without colchicine pretreatment.

The effects of glycerol and colchicine on the sensory end organs of the inner ear were investigated in mice. Glycerol alone induced a widening of the intercellular spaces lining vestibular dark and transitional cells as well as the marginal cells of the stria vascularis. This was noted within 30 min after the injection of glycerol and was normalized again within 4 h after the injection. Colchicine induced some morphological changes in the inner ear sensory cells, such as dissociation of Golgi complexes etc. These isolated glycerol or colchicine injections did not cause any signs of inner ear f

Causes of mortality in an African city.

Registered deaths from the vital statistics registration system of Lagos City, a system that was judged to be 60% complete, were analysed for the year 1977. Nearly 40% of total registered deaths were from infections, parasitic diseases and motor vehicle accidents. Of the reported deaths, 17.3% were from ill-defined conditions. Deaths from neoplasms, diseases of the nervous and sense organs, diseases of the digestive and genitourinary systems as well as those from congenital anomalies are relatively less frequent. Maternal mortality appears to be very high. The age pattern of mortality is diffe…

Protons are a neurotransmitter that regulates synaptic plasticity in the lateral amygdala.

Stimulating presynaptic terminals can increase the proton concentration in synapses. Potential receptors for protons are acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs), Na(+)- and Ca(2+)-permeable channels that are activated by extracellular acidosis. Those observations suggest that protons might be a neurotransmitter. We found that presynaptic stimulation transiently reduced extracellular pH in the amygdala. The protons activated ASICs in lateral amygdala pyramidal neurons, generating excitatory postsynaptic currents. Moreover, both protons and ASICs were required for synaptic plasticity in lateral amygda

Ethnicity and registration as a kidney donor: the significance of identity and belonging.

Studies of attitudes towards cadaveric organ donation have failed to adequately explain the disproportionately low rates of cadaveric organ donation among ethnic minorities. This may reflect an unhelpfully static and narrow definition of 'culture' entailing a collection of predefined cognitive 'beliefs' and 'attitudes.' This paper takes a more integrative approach and considers how ethnicity shapes perceptions of identity and belonging that underpin organ donation discourse among a section of Black British Caribbean people, one of largest migrant groups in the UK. The study is based on 14 in-d

Dual-Emission 2D Blue Luminescent Organic Silver Chalcogenide for Highly Selective Pb2+ Detection in an Aqueous Medium.

Crystalline organic metal chalcogenides (OMCs) are a class of organic-inorganic hybrid semiconducting materials with continuous M-X (X = S, Se, Te) networks formed by the combination of metal nodes and chalcogen atoms from the organic ligands, which display great potentials in the fields of optoelectronics, catalysis, sensing, as well as energy conversion and storage. Here, we synthesized a wave-like 2D OMC material, [(AgBF4)2Me6BHS]n (Ag-BHSMe), from AgBF4 and 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexa(methylselanyl)benzene (Me6BHS) through a simple homogeneous reaction. In the solid state, Ag-BHSMe exhibits both fluo

Role of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine in the homeostasis of metabolic organs, and its potential links with diabetes and its complications.

Recent studies using genetically manipulated mouse models have shown the pivotal role of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine modification (O-GlcNAcylation) in the metabolism of multiple organs. The molecular mechanism involves the sensing of glucose flux by the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway, which leads to the adjustment of cellular metabolism to protect against changes in the environment of each organ through O-GlcNAcylation. More recently, not only glucose, but also fluxes of amino acids and fatty acids have been reported to induce O-GlcNAcylation, affecting multiple cellular processes. In this r

On the concept of an autistic-contiguous position.

The development of British object-relations theory over the past twenty years can be viewed as containing the beginnings of an exploration of a realm of experience that lies outside of the states of being addressed by Klein, Winnicott, Fairbairn and Bion. In this paper, the idea of an autistic-contiguous position is proposed as a way of conceptualizing a psychological organization more primitive than either the paranoid-schizoid or the depressive position. This mode of organizing experience stands in a dialectical relationship to the paranoid-schizoid and depressive modes: each creates, preser

Porous Metal Phosphonate Frameworks: Construction and Physical Properties.

ConspectusPorous metal phosphonate frameworks (PMPFs) as a subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have promising applications in the fields of gas adsorption and separation, ion exchange and storage, catalysis, sensing, etc. Compared to the typical carboxylate-based MOFs, PMPFs exhibit higher thermal and water stability due to the strong coordination ability of the phosphonate ligands. Despite their robust frameworks, PMPFs account for less than 0.51% of the porous MOFs reported so far. This is because metal phosphonates are highly susceptible to the formation of dense layered or pillared

Extrinsic polarity cues control lamination versus cluster-based organization in vertebrate retinal development.

A wide range of retinal architectures allow metazoans to sense and respond to their environment. Early eye anlagen in both invertebrates and vertebrates share an initial pseudo-stratified epithelial organization, which in vertebrates forms a laminated retina, whereas invertebrate neuroepithelia differentiate into repetitive clusters. The contribution of epithelial polarity to vertebrate retinal lamination has remained difficult to address in vivo. Using medaka (Oryzias latipes) retinal organoids, we modulated polarity to assess its impact on the retinal architecture. We show that organoids und

Porous Framework Materials and MXenes as Biosensing Platforms for Amyloid-β Detection.

Amyloid-β (Aβ), a 39-43-amino-acid peptide, is closely associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and undergoes abnormal aggregation that contributes to disease progression. Therefore, rapid and accurate Aβ detection is essential for early AD diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. Biosensors have emerged as promising analytical tools owing to their simplicity, low cost, high sensitivity, and selectivity. In particular, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, and MXenes offer unique structural and functional advantages for Aβ s

Liver governs adipose remodelling via extracellular vesicles in response to lipid overload.

Lipid overload results in lipid redistribution among metabolic organs such as liver, adipose, and muscle; therefore, the interplay between liver and other organs is important to maintain lipid homeostasis. Here, we show that liver responds to lipid overload first and sends hepatocyte-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) targeting adipocytes to regulate adipogenesis and lipogenesis. Geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase (Ggpps) expression in liver is enhanced by lipid overload and regulates EV secretion through Rab27A geranylgeranylation. Consistently, liver-specific Ggpps deficient mice have red

Neural evidence that three dimensions organize mental state representation: Rationality, social impact, and valence.

How do people understand the minds of others? Existing psychological theories have suggested a number of dimensions that perceivers could use to make sense of others' internal mental states. However, it remains unclear which of these dimensions, if any, the brain spontaneously uses when we think about others. The present study used multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) of neuroimaging data to identify the primary organizing principles of social cognition. We derived four unique dimensions of mental state representation from existing psychological theories and used functional magnetic resonance im

Sensory and endocrine characteristics of the avian pineal organ.

The avian pineal organ represents a transitional type between a photosensory organ of lower vertebrates and the endocrine gland of mammals a … oendocrine tissue. The above-mentioned findings reflect the sequence of changes leading from pineal sense organs to pineal gland. The demonstration of melatonin receptors in a variety of avian peripheral tissues suggest a possible direct action of melatonin on the physiological functions of different organ systems in response to internal and external stimuli.

Physiological roles of hydrogen sulfide in mammalian cells, tissues, and organs.

Over the last two decades, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has emerged as an endogenous regulator of a broad range of physiological functions. H2S belongs to the class of molecules known as gasotransmitters, which typically include nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). Three enzymes are recognized as endogenous sources of H2S in various cells and tissues: cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST). The present article reviews the regulation of these enzymes as well as the pathways of their enzymatic and nonenzymatic degradation an
