Allergen Sensitization in Patients with Skin Diseases in Shanghai, China.

INTRODUCTION: Allergen distribution has obvious geographical characteristics. Understanding local epidemiological data may provide evidence-based strategies for the prevention and management of disease. We investigated the distribution of allergen sensitization in patients with skin diseases in Shanghai, China. METHODS: Data from tests for serum-specific immunoglobulin E were collected from 714 patients with three skin diseases who visited the Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital from January 2020 to February 2022. The prevalence of 16 allergen species, as well as age, sex, and disease-group differ

Age and sex-dependent alteration in AMPA receptor density in living human brain.

PURPOSE: The excitatory glutamate α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid receptors (AMPARs) play a pivotal role in neurotransmission and neuronal function. However, the effects of age and sex on AMPAR distribution in the living human brain and their associations with cognitive function remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to characterize age- and sex-dependent changes in brain AMPAR density and their relationships with cognitive performance in healthy individuals. METHODS: Using a positron emission tomography tracer for AMPAR, [11C]K-2, we imaged 143 healthy participan

Age dependence of dithiobiuret neurotoxicity in male and female rats.

Weanling, juvenile and adult rats both sexes were treated with 1 mg/kg/day [14C] dithiobiuret (DTB) until they developed skeletal muscle weakness as detected by failure in a rotarod test. The latent period before the onset of weakness was longest in weanling animals of both sexes. The greater resistance of the weanlings, to DTB intoxication, could not be explained by differences in the cumulative body burden or tissue distribution of DTB and its metabolites. The sex of the animal was not a determinant of DTB toxicity. Urine and feces were the major and minor routes, respectively, for eliminati

Higher variability in the number of sexual partners in males can contribute to a higher prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in females.

By examining published, empirical data we show that men and women consistently differ in the shape of the distribution of the number of sexual partners. The female distribution is always relatively narrow-variance is low-with a big majority of women having a number of partners close to the average. The male distribution is much wider-variance is high-with many men having few sex partners and many others having more partners than most females. Using stochastic modelling we demonstrate that this difference in variance is, in principle, sufficient to cause a difference in the gender prevalence of

HIV control strategies for sex worker-client contact networks.

Controlling the spread of HIV among hidden, high-risk populations such as survival sex workers and their clients is becoming increasingly important in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. Several sociological and structural factors render general control strategies ineffective in these settings; instead, focused prevention, testing and treatment strategies which take into account the nature of survival sex work are required. Using a dynamic bipartite network model of sexual contacts, we investigate the optimal distribution of treatment and preventative resources among sex workers and their clie

Meta-analysis of concha bullosa anatomy with emphasis on Middle Eastern and Asian populations.

BACKGROUND: Concha bullosa (CB) varies widely in reported prevalence, laterality, and subtype distribution, underscoring the need for a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis aimed to derive pooled estimates of CB prevalence, sex distribution, laterality, morphological variants, and the concha bullosa pneumatization index (CBPI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Independent raters screened relevant studies and extracted data. Eligible studies included human research using high-resolution imaging or cadaveric dissection that reported effect s…

Sex differences in chest electrical impedance tomography findings.

Objective.Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been used to determine regional lung ventilation distribution in humans for decades, however, the effect of biological sex on the findings has hardly ever been examined. The aim of our study was to determine if the spatial distribution of ventilation assessed by EIT during quiet breathing was influenced by biological sex.Approach.219 adults with no known acute or chronic lung disease were examined in sitting position with the EIT electrodes placed around the lower chest (6th intercostal space). EIT data were recorded at 33 images/s during qui

[The roles of two HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men].

Objective: To evaluate the roles between two different HIV self-testing models in promoting HIV-testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: This paper focuses on two HIV self-testing service models. The first; is the online self-testing model (HIV self-testing conventional model) with the sexual health promotion network platform. The other one is an innovative HIV self-testing model (secondary distribution model), based on the previous program. The two different self-testing models, including the number of indexes and alters, the positive rate, and the demographics of indexes and a

Gender differences in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese children and adolescents: a large cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported sex differences in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among adults; however, little is known about its occurrence in children and adolescents. This study aims to examine the prevalence of NAFLD among them and investigate the relationship between sex hormones and NAFLD. METHOD: This study included 2999 obese Chinese children aged 2-18 years. We examined the prevalence of NAFLD by sex, age, and Tanner stage. The regression model and principal component analysis were used to analyze the relationship between sex hormones and NAFLD. RESULTS: The pr

Sex differences in adiposity and hemodynamic parameters as cardiovascular risk indicators among South African university staff: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, with their prevalence continuing to rise each year. Adiposity indexes and hemodynamic parameters have been established as effective predictors of CVDs when analysed separately. However, the impact of sex differences on the distribution and combined use of these predictors remains largely unexplored, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to investigate the sex differences in the distribution of adiposity indexes (AI) and hemodynamic parameters (HP), as well as their associated indicators of cardi

A Population-Based Model to Consider the Effect of Seasonal Variation on Serum 25(OH)D and Vitamin D Status.

BACKGROUND: We elaborated a model that predicts the centiles of the 25(OH)D distribution taking into account seasonal variation. METHODS: Data from two Swiss population-based studies were used to generate (CoLaus) and validate (Bus Santé) the model. Serum 25(OH)D was measured by ultra high pressure LC-MS/MS and immunoassay. Linear regression models on square-root transformed 25(OH)D values were used to predict centiles of the 25(OH)D distribution. Distribution functions of the observations from the replication set predicted with the model were inspected to assess replication. RESULTS: Overal

Prevalence and population structure of lice (Phthiraptera) on the Indian Red Avadavat.

Prevalences of two phthirapteran species (an ischnoceran, Brueelia amandavae, and an amblyceran, Myrsidea amandava) on 130 Red Avadavats (Amandava amandava) were 36.2 and 20.8% in the district of Rampur, India, from September to December 2004. Sample mean abundances of the two species were 3.43 and 1.53, respectively. The frequency distribution patterns of both species were aggregated. The observed distribution conformed to the expected distribution of the negative binomial model, but only in the case of M. amandava. Adults dominated over nymphs in the overall adult-to-nymph ratio. Sex ratios

Pharmacokinetic model for procaine in humans during and following intravenous infusion.

A multicompartment pharmacokinetic model is presented to describe procaine distribution in humans during and following intravenous infusion. The model, based on a general perfusion model, relates individual characteristics such as sex, age, weight, height, infusion rate and duration, and hematocrit to general parameters such as drug metabolism, protein binding, ion-trapping effects, and tissue-plasma distribution coefficients to provide an individualized distribution prediction. Experimentally observed kinetics of blood procaine levels collected during intravenous procaine infusion as an adjun

Functional brain networks are associated with both sex and gender in children.

Sex and gender are associated with human behavior throughout the life span and across health and disease, but whether they are associated with similar or distinct neural phenotypes is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that, in children, sex and gender are uniquely reflected in the intrinsic functional connectivity of the brain. Somatomotor, visual, control, and limbic networks are preferentially associated with sex, while network correlates of gender are more distributed throughout the cortex. These results suggest that sex and gender are irreducible to one another not only in society but also in

Demographic trends and geographic disparities in malignant neoplasm of eye and adnexa-related mortality in the United States, 1999-2023.

BACKGROUND: Mortality patterns for malignant neoplasms of the eye and adnexa remain under-described at the national scale. METHODS: Using CDC WONDER (1999-2023), we identified U.S. decedents aged ≥25 years with ICD-10 C69 as the underlying cause. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR; per 100,000, 2000 U.S. standard) and trends were assessed with Joinpoint regression; analyses were stratified by sex, age, census region, urbanisation, place of death, and education. RESULTS: National AAMR rose from 0.12 (95% CI: 0.10-0.14) in 1999 to 0.16 (0.14-0.17) in 2023 (peak 2021), yielding a significant mo
